Learned several things about my M340i B58 watching this video! 👏 Just to add, the B58 uses the same block as the Diesel B57.

This guy knows more than half ass car journalists

What makes the B58 so good, it incorporates the B57 diesel closed deck block, which allows for the higher compression. It also has a forged crank, forged rods and a girdle that greatly strengthens the lower end. It's only down side is DI, which will cause fouling of the intake valves over time.. However, The B58 GEN 3 version corrects this problem by incorporating port injection. 😀

The B58 M240i is an absolute riot to daily.

I have a 340i with a b58 and it is AMAZING. I love it, it has 115k miles and runs so smooooth! I plan on keeping this car for a while, slowly changing the parts that go out with time.

B58 is twin scroll Turbo. Not a single scroll. That is why it says twin power turbo on the engine cover. Love this engine design. Ordered my S58 M2 last month. 💪🏻

Thank you for this. As a 2024 X5 40i owner, I have yet to see any automotive journalist explain, technically, the source for the power boost this engine received in 2024. I suspect that most of that is simply that the engine was underrated in previous versions, and also maybe a little bit from the mild hybrid. Any thoughts? By the way, this channel is extremely helpful - wish my salesman here in SW Florida was as knowledgeable as you.

Great presentation! The car is a joy to drive and it's almost fun to watch the fuel ilevel indicator rapidly head to E if if "you" get really enthusiastic. I took my 440 on a 200 mile, if I used the eco-snail mode @ 70-75 I was getting 31-32 mpg, over 3 hrs of driving. It didn't take long to to push 32 from its throne duing a bit of "sprited" city driving

The new B58TU2 is being implemented in all new bmw 40is now, its got a electronic vanos instead of solenoids, what do you know about that? Does that mean the solenoids no longer need to be changed every 50k? Because vanos and valve gasket has always been B58s only problems

Which B58s is he talking about B58B30M1, M2, or 03? Because we know that the M2 and beyond have BOTH port and direct injection which improved mpg and a little more output. N54 used to limit full throttle below 1,500 rpm and the 48volt mild hybrid actually adds 18 hp and 40 something lb torque. It is unclear if Dinan will offer a tune for the M2 and beyond though. And although you alluded to tuners, it also remains unclear whether Steve Dinan is still authorized or voids the warranties.

I simply love this motor, but mine in hot summer months runs at 230-240 degrees temperature. Been that way for years and the motor doesn't seem to be affected. Is this temperature range normal?

I’m late to the party. But enjoyed this video! I just picked up my M340I xdrive last week to replace my C43 AMG I have had a long time(loved it). Really enjoying it so far, just adjusting to the BMW way of doing things vs the Merc. My only concern with the BMW is the electronics. I’ve never owned one before and it was my only hesitation. Any input on how the electronics are in newer BMW’s? I worked in automotive tool & die for years and that was always one of the biggest concerns from them.

What about the b48 in the 530i?

I'm sorry but In my opinion the N54 is the best non M motor. The options and after market make the N54 king in my book. I have raced plenty of b58 and its not even close, now I will clarify my car has after market turbos and a tune making over 500 hp to the wheels. The n54 has forged internals making it one of BMWs most capable motors ever produced. Dollar for dollar the N54 is least expensive to make the high horse power numbers. The b58 is a beast for sure I am not saying it's a bad engine it's a matter of cost per horsepower dollar spent in my humble opinion.

I have a 2023 M240 Xdrive stock easy sub 4 second 0-60. I am coming from another B58 car the 2020 M340 and this M240 is even faster and more brutal.

Not so sure about reliability after just 105,000 miles...No prior warnings... and Boom 💥 This is not spam... I really need help with this. My 2017 BMW 540i G30 just burned a valve #4 cylinder. (105k miles) I had the vsfr high flow cat, upgraded charge pipe, k&n air filter, new B58TU Fuel pump, and Bootmod3 Stage 2+ 93 octane. I am beyond depressed!😢 I am a Single Dad with 1 special needs, child. I was told I need a new engine that will cost 21k installed. I just can't! 😭 I still owe 25k, and it is my only car. I have nothing right now and am about to lose my job. I can't get my kids to the doctors, etc... If you had reviewed your video, you would have noticed that you really needed a microphone attached to your shirt. Secondly, when you spoke, you should have had more onscreen words and descriptions. You tried to explain the "why" of the peak RPM of the .B58 bore and stroke figures. An online comparison chart showing those figures as compared to BMW's V-10 might have been useful.
