BMW bluetooth install for Business CD radio (AUX, A2DP, USB)

@@mrfixpl Sure I will try to make a decent video and post my code and explanation on a bmw forum or somewhere relevant and post the link here for others. I need to do some code cleaning and fine tuning first for the volume control because I want to keep this functionality as the default BT levels are pretty high and cause distortion if not reduced so it is best to have control over this indipendantly respect to the car's radio volume. As the KCAN gives only a pressed ID and not seperate pressed/depressed values (which would have been cool like on the older I bus) I need to emulate the long press via software using timing and delays. At the moment it works pretty well but sometimes when "long pressing" after changing the BT volume it also skips to the next or previous song as the buffer may contain the same command (the MCP buffers the commands even if the arduino is busy doing something else) and it gets executed as a seperate skip track command.

Maybe when you detect long press you should ignore short press trigger (let's say for the next 500ms or so) to filter out those false track skips? I'm just guessing since I have no idea how your code and the CAN data flow looks.

@@mrfixpl the module simply keeps sending the pressed button command in sequence (1 about every 100ms), there is no short or long press command, it is just the same command repeated until you release it (there is neither a press down or release command, you have to emulate it). So, I am changing the code to simply keep the output of the relative pin low until the command is no longer received using a short timeout. It is this timeout that has to be tuned (cannot be too short else will timeout before the next button command is received and so will not long press or cannot be too long or the volume will be increased/decreased too much. As it is a question of milliseconds it depends (as usual with these loop codes) on where the command is executed and how long it takes to check the next command in the code. As there is serial debugging which introduces more delays this steals processor time (with millisecond delays serial output is a killer). I removed all debugging code in order to keep it as responsive as possible but I need to know the timing limits and for that I need the debug output! Anyhow a long story short I just need some time in the car to find the right delay:).

Jestem posiadaczem E87 2005 rok diesel 2L 122 km i wymieniałam w niej wahacze od zbieżności z tyłu, łożyska oraz czujniki abs następnie regenerowałem dyferencjał i z tego co widzę czeka mnie wymiana dwu masa i jestem ciekawy czy tylko mnie te naprawy spotkały czy może też miałeś takie problemy?

U siebie tylko jeden z amortyzatorów mialem rozcieknięty. Poza tym nic szczególnego.

The thing is that BMW offered only one model of the multi-function steering wheel (only with all 8 buttons) and even if you have the 2 phone-related buttons, you will not be able to use them if you don't have the bluetooth option in your car. The only thing that came to my mind is tapping into the CAN-BUS with an arduino with additional hardware and listen for the button pressed message. Then use it to control the device. But this is more a hobbyist project since there would be a lot of R&D to make such a thing.

Hi! If I had to guess, I would say that during the clutch change they damaged your cars ECU and replaced it with used one. Mileage is stored in ECU if I'm correct so you have the donors mileage on the display. But that's just a guess...

Na tym etapie nie. Radio nie wie czy przez AUX jest coś nadawane czy nie, więc jeżeli chce się słuchać muzyki z radia, to trzeba się ręcznie przełączać na AUX/BT przy połączeniu przychodzącym. Dałoby się to rozwiązać, gdyby odbiornik BT w jakiś sposób sygnalizował przychodzące połączenie (np. diodą). Wtedy trzeba przechwycić ten sygnał, użyć mikrokontrolera do jego rozpoznania i wstrzyknięcia w szynę CAN polecenia zmiany źródła na AUX.

I have it paired with two phones. It connects automatically to the one that it can find. It can have two connected devices at the same time. Didn't checked yet what happens when both devices are trying to stream audio.

Thanks, yes, I understand. I wanted just to be sure, that it can not happen that someone near will connect to the bluetooth module before the driver can do. But anyway the pairing itself requires also confirmation when you do it with some new device. So the devices which are not paired will not connect to the bluetooth module automaticaly - uncontrollably. One more question. Do you think that it is suitable also for my BMW E46? If you aren't sure, it doesn't mind, I'll try it anyway. :-)It is great DIY tutorial, thanks!!

As far as i know it will work just fine in any car with AUX input.

Koszt części zmieścił się chyba w 40PLN. Ciężko określić ile zajął montaż, bo robiłem to na raty w wolnych chwilach.

A jak myślisz da radę to zrobić do tego radia z navi? Mam aux'a w tym ale twoje rozwiązanie jest o niebo lepsze. Tylko myślę czy nic nie zepsuje w tym aucie bo nie zajmuje sie kompletnie elektroniką, tylko jakies lutowanie i takie pierdoły.

Raczej nie. Najwyżej się przepali bezpiecznik. Za niedługo zrobię filmik o tych bezpiecznikach (gdzie kiedy pojawia się napięcie) - po jego obejrzeniu na pewno będzie się wiedziało więcej i instalacja czegokolwiek będzie łatwiejsza.

My DC-to-DC regulator can take up to 5 Amps. The bluetooth device uses under 100mA and the regulator is not even slightly warm when I'm using it. If I remember correctly it also have some kind of thermal breaker.

mr-fix I have finished it today. The overheating will truly not be a problem, and as you have told the wiring is a pain in the ass. Though I completed it and it works, I am not a hundred percent satisfied with the audio quality. The soldering is fine. It just seems like it lacks a little bit of base. Don’t get me wrong it has base but not as good as it should be I guess. Still need to Test it more.

Some BT receivers have EQ modes that you can choose from.

mr-fix alrighty. One last question. I’ve tried several different microphones, but the volume of the voice is very low. If I put the mic next to my mouth maybe the other side can understand me on the phone, but not while it is installed to its place up above. Is there a way to increase the gain of the mic? Maybe an amplifier board connected to the Bluetooth chip. And if so, can I share the power between those 2, or would I need a separate line from another pig fuse?

I have it 75% ready. It's not connected yet. Each button on the BT board have 1 wire, there's a common ground connection between Bt board and HVAC module in BMW. The hard part is to solder into the BMW buttons in correct places and cut circuits in such way that the signal levels match.

I am mostly interested in the play/pause button. The button on the bt board has 4 solder points on the button. Which solder point should i solder my wire to?

Most likely 2 of those points are connected permanently to ground. The other two are shorted to ground when you press the button. You need to check which of those two will short to ground with button pressed, solder to it and connect to external button/switch that will short to ground when pressed.

@@niklassandgren5355 The buttons have 4 solder points because they are redundant: 2 on one side coincide with the 2 on the opposite side. As mr-fix said, simply check with a tester in Ohms the Ground pin of the button by touching one contact and the USB shield for ex. - the one with 0 Ohms is the ground and the one on the side (or not 0 Ohms) is the signal input (toggle). The buttons have mirrored connections so if one has GND on the left the next button has it on the right. There is a small plug with 2 connections on the far side (if you soldered it) which is in parallel with the "MODE" button which you can also use if you like for this purpose.

Działa jak każdy inny analogowy AUX. Dźwięk leci przez głośniki radia, głośność ustawiamy na radiu, resztę robi się na telefonie (play/pauza, wybór utworu).

Moduł na filmie to uniwersalna płytka. Zadziała wszędzie gdzie jest wejście AUX. Jeżeli chodzi o maksymalne zachowanie funkcjonalności (np. obsługa z przycisków radia itp.) to lepiej zamontować emulator zmieniarki z funkcją bluetooth.

Przez AUX trzeba podać sygnał wzmocniony. Proszę się upewnić, że przewód łączący się z masą mikrofonu jest zalutowany do padu GDN na płytce.

mr-fix tłumacząc łopatologicznie sorry ale to nie moja dziedzina :p Miałem w wiązce kabla mikrofonu dwa przewody. Jeden czerwony drugi złoty a w obu z nich były jeszcze takie przezroczyste. Od obydwu oddzieliłem te przezroczyste i załączyłem je razem. Dalej na płytce połączyłem czerwony z dziurka INR złoty z INL a złączone przezroczyste z AGND. Still nothing ;/

Tak łopatologicznie, to podłączasz mikrofon do AUXa zamiast do wejścia mikrofonu. Nie będzie to działało z dwóch powodów: wejście AUX prawdopodobnie nie jest używane jako mikrofon bluetooth tylko do przekazywania dźwięku dalej na wyjście; Mikrofon podpięty pod AUX nie będzie działał bo potrzebuje swojego zasilania. Na mojej płytce (nie wiem jaką masz u siebie) jest osobno AUX (L, R, GND) i osobno pady do wlutowania mikrofonu (MIC+, MIC-).

Przewiń film na 0:47 i zobacz gdzie fabrycznie był przewidziany mikrofon - tam trzeba się wlutować.

Ok u mnie jest m+ i m- rzeczywiście natomiast wcześniej tak podłączałem i również nie działało. Mogę spróbować jeszcze przezroczysty zostawić w gnd a czerwony i złoty do m+\-

Hej, sprawdzałem dwa zasilacze, podpinałem zasilnie bezpośrednio z zapalniczki nadal słychać szum. Jedynie ustawiając na radiu wartość AUX na 1 oraz zmniejszając wielkość treble szum znacznie znika ale kosztem głośności. Masz może jakiś inny pomysł?

Problem stanowiło źródło dźwięku, po zmianie telefonu na inny model problem znikł.

Było to już trochę temu i jakość nie była rewelacyjna, ale nie było z nią większych problemów. Teraz pewnie bym szukał płytki BT, która ma dwa wejścia mikrofonowe. Jedno z nich wtedy nasłuchuje hałasu otoczenia, drugie głosu, a elektronika robi swoje i wycina hałas tła.

Na razie odbieranie będę miał z pustego przycisku obok grzania foteli i systemu start/stop. Już udało mi się usunąć blokadę kliknięcia i musze się tylko wlutować w płytkę. Co do przycisków na kierownicy, to chyba trzeba by czytać komunikację na szynie CAN i odpowiednio reagować na komunikat o naciśnięciu przycisku. Zrobię za niedługo filmik o term. 30g - przepiąłem bluetooth i rejestrator z term. 15 (zasilanie po zapłonie) właśnie na term. 30g (zasilanie niby-stałe, wyłączone przy braku aktywności w aucie po kilkunastu minutach). Dzięki temu kamera i BT włącza się już gdy nacisnę przycisk na pilocie i działa przez jakiś kwadrans po wyjęciu kluczyka.
