Sometimes conventional is the better route but sometimes PDR is the better way to go. One application where PDR is the better option is when there is a large damaged area but the paint is still good.
I have experience in both conventional and PDR. With the conventional process, it is really hard to get a large area shaped perfect with a block because hand-feel and blocks can only go so far. The best check is a clean reflection in both proesses, but the conventional process requires the paint to be sanded off. Therefore, in the conventional process there's a big gap after the paint is sanded off until the final step ( which is in the paint booth after clearcoat). So in conventiona bodywork there's a big disconnect where it is somewhat of a guess and reliance on "experience." If there's a discrepancy in the final reflection after repaint, there's going to be a redo.
The PDR advantage is that we get to check the surface's reflection from start to finish. We use the reflection to tell us so many things, it's like a LANGUAGE (which can take years to learn and master). A PDR specialist goes back and forth for hours sometimes, reading what the panel needs then testing it. Because we use this visual language, the back and forth "conversation," there is almost no disconnect between the PDR tech and the final reflection - the reflection is monitored throught the PDR process. We never lose sight of what's happening to the surface reflection and shape - from start to finish.
