Just did this yesterday, and it worked! Saved my family the $300 a local shop wanted to charge me, and it took me 20 minutes. No more smoke, no more rough idle, no more gurgling. Problem solved. THANK YOU!!!
Found out mine is starting to go.. In fear of stripping the bolts, I've been putting it off. But now that I've seen this, I'm ordering one tonight. Thanks.
YES!!! you done what I was thinking of doing and it works, SHAME they are not selling a kit with membrane spring and the cover for r39 and 38, BIG THANKS to you for the great video !!!!!!
You have seriously made my day. I am chasing a vacuum leak on my 2001 540 and don't really want to replace the entire CCV for fear it will require removing the intake manifold. Now, I can just replace the membrane and test it out. Wow! Wunderbar!
That is not a OSV (Oil Separator Valve) like everyone mistakes. That is the crankcase vent valve on the back of the manifold. Sure, that connects to the oil separator by a pipe underneath the intake manifold, but its not an oil separator. The OSV is under the U-Shaped timing guide
...awesome video, just got a 540i and had the bad valve...other videos make it look harder than it is, and has us taking all the torx out...and blames the other "rubbers' as the culprit, when in fact, it is just the membrane...THX a million
Just removed mine according to your method. Sure enough...the membrane is split! I just have to wait for the replacement to arrive now. I'll see if that cures my problems. Thanks.
Yes! The key is the whistle sound, when you hear it just put your hand on the membrane and aply pressure if the sound changes you got the culprit, be sure you get OEM and no aftermarket junk
Omg you saved me so much time I truly appreciate it. It literally took me 5 min all the Job however I started it didn’t smoke drove it for a bit and started smoking a little bit I’m assuming it’s old oil being in the intake sitting there. I will drive more and see
Same I have changed begin of this year Cost part osv in Thailand about 120 USD plus labour fee about 30 usd Totally pay about 150 usd and engine back to work well done. Happy driving ultimate machine agains. Cool machine V8 4.4 Lites NengBMW.
Hi Edwin, thanks for this nice trick and for taking the time to film/share it:), Is there any difference in the symptoms if the part that goes into the intake manifold is what fails? Thanks!
@HoZyVN yes it still dus (that's the oil pump you hear) but the suction should be almost gone. this one had only a little hole so no, if you have the cold rough idle look at my M62 leak test video
I wish there was a "Love" button for this video! I have been putting this off for a while because of the space restriction to replace the CCV. THANK YOU!
Homerraas understood. I’m pretty sure I found one at BMW of South Atlanta. My 99 540i shows part number 11-61-7-501-563. Another question. I’ve got a used LCM and have put off replacing because I do t want to lose my mileage readout. Is there any other easier way to reflash or program to get the readout back without having to spend over 100.00 at a German auto shop in town?
Did it yesterday based on this video. In my case the original membrane was OK, but the plastic cap which holds the membrane had one of the holding holes broken. I also guess that the oil leak on the back of the engine that I was chasing for a half a year was coming from here. Tomorrow I'm going to wash the engine and then observe if the oil leak continues.
Is the battery charging enough? Did you check the output from the alternator? See my other video's how to unlock the cluster or you can have a bad cell in the battery
YES!!! you done what I was thinking of doing and it works, SHAME they are not selling a kit with membrane spring and the cover for r39 and 38, BIG THANKS to you for the great video !!!!!! my e39 540i was making a nasty whistle noise, now is GONE just as the smoke!!
@Homerraas After fitting the new OSV membrane, If the car is idling an you pull the dipstick out, Does it still gurgle? An before you replaced it, Was your car rough on a cold start an then smooth as it got warmer?
Sweet. My 99 740il just started doing this burning oil on cold starts. Everyone says it's this. This is the only video that I've seen that just shows changing the diaphragm. It's the same exact symptom. Except I hear that it can cause rough idle and a whistle. Buy I have neither. Just the little bit of smoke and you can smell it. Anyway. Pretty sure the part is like 14 something. Hope it fixes it. Pretty sure it will. Thanks for this video. I love my car to much to let it fall apart. Also happy I have a 7 series with much more room than the other modles with m62s.
If it smokes like in the video then yes. Pull the dipstick if there is a hard vacuum when you put your finger on it then yes OSV, If you think the MAF then just pull the plug and drive it see if it changes
Question is does it have suction when you put your finger on it? if the part is good you should have mild to none. Glue well depends on how bad it's ripped............
+David Haile My valve arrived so I followed the instructions to pop the cap off as shown. The plastic isn't as flexible on mine as it is on the video and a few tabs on the New valve cracked. I'm not too worried - yet. If the cap on the existing bad valve comes off as easy on my 740il as it does in the video, I'll use the old cap with the new membrane. I should know tomorrow morning if it worked. Anyway - advice to anyone else who wants to give it a try is to see if you can modify a screwdriver by bending up a lip on the very end of the screwdriver. This may enable it to get behind the tabs and pry them out before they crack like mine did. My near worst case is to silicone the new cap in place. The absolute worst case is I have to buy another valve. That's not too expensive.
Advice for the next person to try it at home: If you are using a cheap aftermarket part like I did, the ones that are $20 on Ebay, spend some time looking at the part to figure out how to remove the cap from the new part without breaking the tabs. The aftermarket part is not created using high quality plastic. Two of the 5 tabs broke but I used it anyway. It seemed to snap to the old housing securely. The old PCV housing was definitely original. The old cap broke in pieces and the original diaphragm stuck to the housing. It took a few minutes to get all the old pieces off. That's the entire challenge of this project, though. Once the old cap was clear, the new cap was simple to align the spring and snap in place. 2002 BMW 740il

Hello Homerraas, you seem like an expert on these engines :) I have a problem with a 540 with blue smoke on startup and acceleration after engine braking. I have changed the oil separator behind the timing cover. I get whistling noise from back of the engine sometimes. But i get no vacuum at all when removing dip stick?? Could it still be the Membrane that needs changing/cleaning?
I changed my intake manifold Cover as you showed in the video. But I changed all parts.before from the oil dipstick was coming air out side. But now I changed with new cover and after that it pulls my finger inside?but everything works normal there s not any smoke at all.
I bought what looks like the same PCV plate you have and I'm still considering whether or not to just change the membrane or the whole plate. One thing I just noticed is the replacement PCV has an extra vacuum line (the one with the orange o ring) which the factory PCV doesn't have. Should I just cap this, I'm assuming it's for a different application, I have the 3.0 V8 btw?
The mechanic informed me that this OSV got a problem. The engine trembles and produce black smoke. Another mechanic suggested that it's an air mass issue E38 1996 735iL
Had done this repair. Had no gurgle in dipstick, now I do. Noticed the diaphragm was not clicked in all the way. After snapping it in fully, still had gurgle/idle/smoke. Decided to replace the whole part and reunite the new diaphragm. Still having symptoms. Could the part be bad? It looked fine. Also have a leak in front throttle, could that cause issues w dipstick?
Start the car, let it get warm (or drive it) the when running pull the dipstick see if the RPM change then place your finger on the dipstick if there is a vacuum (pulls your finger) then it could be the OSV
when I changed my OSV part.I took the intake manifold out and I put it on back there can it be that maybe I didnt put it back to the place good.and it is getting a vacum leak underneath the intake manifold?
Hey I got a 95 m540i and it very recently started doing the same (smoke)! I'm pretty sure it's not a vanos engine, its an m60b40? or something like that. Is the procedure exactly the same for my car?
104 comments and not ONE person mentioned that this is NOT THE OSV!!! This is the CCV or the Pressure Control Valve. The OSV is the Oil Separator Valve and it is located at the front of the M62 motor inside of the engine. I can't believe in 2 and a half years I am the only one who has stated this. Come on guys.
Read the text under the video, this is common talked about as the OSV and also know as that. I do agree with you but it's a fact if I made this video and said CCV nobody would know what this was about ;)
The BMW logo suggests that is an original replacement BMW CCV cover in your video. Is that right? I tried this method with on my 18 yr old M62 CCV cover diaphragm with 2 screwdrivers of differing diameters and it was impossible. I had the garage replace the whole cover for me in the end, which required removing the intake manifold as the lower bolts would not budge, and I asked for the old cover back at the end so I could practice the above method and also check out the state of the diaphragm; and even then it was impossible to get the circular cover off the back without breaking it off around each tab with a screwdriver and knife. Perhaps it might have been possible to do it if I levered it by 2 or 3 tabs at once, with a lot of force and risking breaking it. But doing it at one tab at a time didn't work as the plastic was so stiff it wouldn't give the play required to clear it of the tab. Maybe there is some variances in the tolerances of the parts, but I take this whole method with a pinch of salt when it comes to any future PCV issues. Lucky for you that you managed it on yours!
Fabian Dee Sorry that it didn’t work for you, I have done this trick on about 40 cars from my customers all without any issues. Yes some tabs will break but as you have a new original one that will then pop right back into place
engine s running perfect.but when i was changing the OSV after I finished everything and I put everything back together on engine I started to car car was closing by itself.and i looked the Vent pipe was out.I forgot to put it on there.and I opened once again intake manifold and I put the vent pipe on the place and car started to run normal. But I dont know can it get air out from the vent pipe. But anyway I will go to take a video
