Had the same story with the heater. The control valve was rusty piece of garbage and had dead circulation motor Replaced it with used factory one from E39 with low mileage and that did the job Before than, it was heating up, but only if you let the engine rev up to at least 3000 rpm. But worked only at the 32 degrees on the climate control. Also, one of the E38s you showed, that had 95 style wheels, not sure if you noticed, but it was equipped with ACC - automatic crouise goddamn control. This option was rare AF.
Dude! Great eye, I have no idea how I missed it! You're 100% right - this option is rare AF and I really wish I had it. I'll try to spot this car again and take a close look.
To be honest, I regret selling my 740d, but I bought it too neglectet to ot be worthy restoring it. So was looking for a better one back in Ukraine. There was two with ACC, but one had paper issues so I decided not to take a risk and another one was too close to a front line...But fun fact, both of them had ACC failure due to radar in bumber has old rusty wiring Now I have E39 530d touring with 6spd manual, but willing to sale it and buy a V8 e38... GOD I miss that sound@@adamflower1715
For a polish person, your english is way above average. And I love that you have those weird things like turn off the lights and turn them on at night to be amazed by the light output. People call me autistic for it. lol
i like your style of videos. Comfy, a bit of humor, talking about the car in many aspects, good tests and comparisons.. Overall very complete and calm !
Greetings from Austria, love the content. My 725tds is my trusty daily since August and has bravely managed the snowy conditions we got here the past weeks. Watching your videos make me want to get a 740d tho
Lucky you your E38 has everything heated. My 95 Opel Vectra A has no heated steering, Seats or mirrors😂. My heatercore was clocked when I bought the car so I had no heat whatsoever in my car. It was so cold in my car that the freezing temperatures started to hurt. At least after 3 years owning the car I replaced many parts and even repainted both sides because of rust. Now with wax in all hollow spaces the car is my perfect daily.
I used to have a gasoline 1994 740i as a winter beater for a long time. Drove my e24 in the summer. Then changed places in storage with the E38 every autumn and spring. The E38 did really well in winter. Also loved the heated seats. And also looked foward to enjoying the m60 v8 again. Pity i had to sell both a few years ago. Now driving a e39 528i on all season tires 😅. Not complaining though lol.
To be honest it must be super rare to see E38 or even E39 without heated seats.. 🤔 I rarely use half of the heating power in my 540i since it’s so powerful you can literally hardboil your family jewels 🥵🍒
Very nice to see an E38 being daily driven and also interesting to follow up the updates on your 740d. Keep the videos coming! I want to take my E38 out on the road where it belongs, after I repair what it needs. It's also Orientblau like the last one you showed, but better equipped since it's a 750i (not loaded though).
@@adamflower1715 My pleasure.😁 No, the car in the video isn't a 750i. You can tell because the door trim in the B pilar section has a sort of chrome mirror effect in the V12s which isn't present in the rest of the E38s. The front grille is also different with extra chrome for the 750. The 750s have some special details (also in the interior) that weren't available with the other engines, no matter how well equipped they were. My '98 750i has much less equipment than your 740d, which are tipically fully loaded. Mine doesn't even have heated seats or sunroof, but it comes standard with hinged backrest comfort seats, extra wood trim in the seat backs, extended leather, double glazing, wooden rear ashtrays, wooden reading lights and extra footwel lights, etc.
I myself have a BMW F11 530d (258Hp & 560Nm), in snowy and slippery conditions the DSC is doing a great job indeed to maneuver with the torque that the engine gives out.
I have the 740i as a daily driver in finland. going second winter strong and it handels so nicely on the snow. my model is 95 without traction control but it was very nicely equiped back in germany :D
no to są samochody o których będziemy śnić jako starsze dziadki. no miodzio. miodzio. Poezja prawdziwej motoryzacji. Podobno talent muzyczny trzeba mieć , by akcenty łapać. Dbaj o niego. One hell of a beautiful ride mate.
I wish it will snow soon in Romania so I can drive my E38 in winter-snowy conditions. I have the Style 60 with Nexen winter tires now. I also have a set like yours (Style 6 I think they are called) with some crap chinese A/S tires. Greets! 🤝
That G Wagen is stalking you! 🤣 Those same wheels came standard on my 94 730i (M60 V8). I have recently replaced them with a set of M pars - she looks super hot now 😎
It may well be that your heater control valve doesn't work but you can test it fairly simple by just feeling if it clicks (rather violent) when it ist activated. Cleaning also can help fixing it when it's not rusted into pieces. But what I found is that with that age it actually tends to be the heater core being clogged up. This thing has a rather unusual setup with 3 lines. The hot water comes in in the middle and exits onthe left or right side (this is how the dual climate is done) whilst then flow is controlled by the mentioned heater valves (or maybe the other way round). Especially if your E38 gets warmer on one side while having the climate control setting identical this clearly shows a clogged heat exchanger. I successfully unclogged mine without removing it with a self made contraption out of three hoses, a cheap water pump adapter for a drilling machine and a bucket full of hot water mixed with citric acid. But on the diesel models there's another thing what can prevent the heater from working: the egr thermostat! This thing normally fails open and the engine simply will not get warm enough. I would never have believed this myself but this definitely can happen and actually does so quite frequently. The temperature gauge has to stay right in the middle even in the coldest weather. If it stays on the left side it's time for a egr thermostat (assuming that the normal one is ok).

This is so smooth 😌 but man, -40 degrees! I can’t even imagine what that is, I’m from south of Europe 😅
The past two years In Chełm looked similar, I remember beating my e39 on the Żółtańce lake parking lot two years ago, changing a thrust arm at -20C wasn't fun
Thanks for the video! Looking forward to watch more near future. Few words about the Phaeton. I had Phaeton with 3,0 Tdi V6 (facelift as it was 2011), that was a great car. Silent and smooth. Only problem was that doors had some corrosion (or is it oxidation as the doors are aluminium?). Also some slight electricity problem was around. V10 Tdi might have expensive maintenance work costs as the engine need to drop down if something bigger is done (there is no room for working). Same issue with the 6,0 W12. And both those engines can have in pre-facelift models. So I recommend Phaeton with the 3,0Tdi engine as it has enough power 240-245hv and it is facelift model and little bit modern related to lights (rear/headlights) and dashboard components (navigation etc.). I also had a VW Touareg (same car as Porsche Cayenne) with the same engine, that was also facelift model and there were no common Touareg pre-facelift drive shaft issues (vibration). In case that is your cup of a tea, you should test drive that carefully in order to avoid buying car with tricky vibrations. That Touareg was also excellent car to drive, especially at the winter time as it is "over-engineered" and full capable off road car. Nowadays I have a Lexus RX450h and I'm enjoying reliability and I can recommend that also.
Thanks for the comment. Nice to see that a Phaeton owner is one of the viewers :) I saw a really nice V6 facelift for sale, but not only did the listing show up after I purchased the E38, it was also too expensive for me. That being said I think it was a really good deal from a foreigner in Warsaw that was leaving the country. I know that a V10 TDI will be expensive to maintain, but I feel like it might just be worth it! I mean, come on, a 10-cylinder diesel in a 4-door? They will never make such a car again. I appreciate all the tips. I know that the RX450h is a great car and my dad's actually considering buying one (1st gen) after a decade of 1999 V6 Camry ownership.
@@adamflower1715 Yes, you're right Phaeton with V10 Tdi is like a future unicorn that is highly appreciated. The sound of that engine is great! I bought mine from Germany as there is lot of choices. The current RX450h that I drive with is 2021 model and I bought it from Sweden when it had only 26tkm (now 42tkm). Most probably that will last long.
NIce E38 diesel! I was thinking about getting a "diesel locomotive" myself after my E32 had to go. Well, taxes for big old diesel engines are pretty high in Germany , so i went astray with a japanese gas V8 instead...
Sometimes when its really cold and icy i also turn off the heating and just use the heated seats and mirror so the engine warms up even when u drive slowly
Now I want to get an e38 too :( maybe an Option as a second car, since my 6 Series e63 650i has been my Daily All year round and still is. Nice Videos, keep up the good Work
I have E39 530d and my heater has a bit different problem, it blows max hot or max cold, nothing in between lol. By the way I'm new to your channel and found your videos informative and very chill :) subbed
hey man you make me really want to get an e38 aswell. i remember when i had an e46 coupe a couple of years ago and i always had something to fix on that car, it makes me kind of nostalgic to see you talk about all of these small things on this beautiful e38
Hey, you only live once. You might as well get one! So far my biggest expense was the 1K EUR rust repair, but I bought a couple of parts here and there for it. I will make an update video with all the expenses once she's all fixed up.
What‘s the issue driving these on low rpms? I often do it the other way round, shifting up for cruising constantly and on low rpms to reduce engine wear… 😮 Regarding the broken headlight adjuster it helps, if you fix the unit from towards the engine bay by either taping it in the up position or block it upwards with something between the light unit and the air filter box - at least until repairs…
in my e36 i need to wait about 2-5 minutes for the seats to heat up with the heating seats feature. What about you ? Do you have to wait long? What is leaking in your car (not much with cold weather) water or oil?
Yeah, same thing. It takes a few minutes for them to heat up. About 5, too I'd say. The car's leaking oil, power steering fluid, and coolant. The fuel lines should be replaced too, I think. I mentioned it in my previous road trip video.
Every 740d should have the aux heater ;) also using defrost setting will give you hot air Do the bi xenon upgrade, I was the first to do that 15 years ago (homerraas /BMWorks)
Much better to go bi-led now that the tech has surpassed xenon. Retrofitlab are a great resource. You could upgrade the dips to bi-led projectors and the mains to led main beam projectors. I'm not sure if you could program the body module to not throw up a fault. Though if you had switch it to xenon the load might be very similar at 35 or so watts. I have bi-led and main beam LED and they absolutely rock (not in a 7er sadly lol, but a 2004 Astra Bertone Coupe)
@@TheRoverspeed Thanks, my friend had an E39 with bi-leds and they were great, but I'm just afraid that some grumpy inspection man will have issues with it as it's technically illegal. But the bi-xenons might fly under the radar.
I am unsure about e38s but on e46s the exterior temperature sensor may inhibit the AC and heater from working. I see yours indicates -40. Replace it. It might just be your fix.
Did you find the culprit for the sudden-loss-of-power-on-the-highway problem? I got the same car with same problem and it's impossible to accelerate/overtake on high speeds, as it shuts down suddenly..it shows some generic error with the high-pressure-fuel-pump, but who knows..
@@adamflower1715 Ah yeah, "Transmission failsafe mode" is just the message displayed on the screen, indicating going into limp-mode. However, after diagnosis, it showed that particular error.
@@adamflower1715i m looking on forums and everywhere, but found nothing. I m doing my oil service every 10k/km.I hope to not have any problems in future.
The heater valve needs to be replaced with a new original or nothing else will work for a long time and will not work correctly. As for the light, you simply don’t have it at all. This is safety. Now it costs just a little money to buy new bi-xenon lenses and replace them, the light will appear and at the same time they will repair the headlight range control, which is why everything inside the headlight is hanging out.
@@adamflower1715 I bet you could get almost double of that in Finland. The cheapest one here costs 4800 EUR with almost 400k kilometers and with over 5 problems. Year 1999.
Hey, i know the video is 2 weeks old but, my E39s heating stopped working last month as it got colder outside, i thought my heater valve was rusted stuck, turns out i just had to top up the coolant, the heater matrix is higher in the system than the coolant resrvoir that means when the level gets low, it cant push the coolant up there, only needed like 500ml of coolant and voila, heating works as it should, somethimes its the simple stupid things :D
Your vids reminded me of my days when I was studying in Warszawa. Wonderful memories with amazing people. One of the best countries I ever lived in! @@adamflower1715
