DIY'ers should be aware of dry and wet torque numbers. usually the given torque is for dry threads, if dealing with oily drain plugs that value can be cut 20% or you'll see why mating aluminum pans and steel plugs weren't the best ideas coming out of Bavaria
@E39Source
@E39Source 4 года назад
BMW does not provide wet or dry torque numbers for their techs. I think you're better off to clean/dry all hardware before reinstalling.

Is "thermal oil level sensor" and "sump oil temperature sensor" the same unit? Both appear faulty on my 530i.

Do you know how accurate is oil temp on this engine ? Because there is no oil temp sensor in this car .
@E39Source
@E39Source 3 года назад
The E39 M5 does have an oil temp sensor, built into the level sensor which sits in the bottom of the pan.

Okay Ryan thanks for the vid as always. Question, my oil drain plug is stripped and I bought a new pan, but can I drain my oil from the level sensor for now so I can put the new one on? I don't have an oil extractor otherwise I would drain from the dip stick.

Good Stuff! But Your engine was rebuilt? I thought you didn't change the pistons and bearings?
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 лет назад
I kept the pistons, block, and heads. They were all professionally polished though, so they're as good as new. Every single bearing, bit of hardware, piece of rubber, and internal sensor was replaced as well.

How i love your videos :) This channel is simply superb! Now Ryan wanna say that BMW isn't first and last German brand which sells spare parts much more expensively if they put BMW logo on it. For example i can say the same about Mercedes parts. For example thermostat which is made by German company named Wahler costs twice more if it has benz logo and part number on it, also the same story with fuel filters which are made by Mahle, Engine mounts which are made by Lemforder and e.t.c. So it is only marketing because i can't imagine that any well known German spare parts manufacturer will reduce their quality and the parts which have no auto brand logos on it will worst than against the genuine parts are. So, personally i love Genuine parts, but it is senselessly to pay twice more for them .
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 лет назад
Thank you for the positive feedback! I consider the OE parts the same as the OEM though, the BMW / Mercedes-Benz logo adds no value of any kind! One must simply determine the original manufacturer and obtain that part.

Ryan, my 2011 328i has a built-in carbon air filter in the housing compartment, along with the replaceable air filter (e90). I want to cut out this built in carbon filter, but I don't want to adversely effect anything like the sensor or anything else that I might not be aware of. do you happen to know if I can cut that out and be okay? to me it seems like a redundancy, and the more air I can get into the engine, the better (I assume ). keep in mind I still have the replaceable K&N filter in there. Thanks in advance.
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 лет назад
I would leave it as it is. Fresh filters are the best filters, removing them can allow lower-quality air into your engine.

would a bmw e39 m5 be more work then a bmw e39 528i
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 лет назад
+anthonyk it depends on the condition of both. Parts for the m5 will be more expensive and possibly harder to find than the 528, depending on what it is

nice vid! i have a 530d 2002 e39 51K miles and im getting the 28 thermal sensor for oillevel defect. was that the same fault code you got?
@E39Source
@E39Source 4 года назад
This is a different code than I got. I am not sure about the diesels, but in the US, only the M5 received an oil temperature sensor. I would do some research on that code as it pertains to the diesel cars.
