Thank you for sharing. Yes sir, you are 100% spot on with this. A short time after buying our used E46 this happened to us. We were steered to a Specialized Transmission shop just outside Los Angeles. $2300 later all was perfect. At the time the car was a low mileage example but I still made it a point to replace the rear crankshaft seal, related gaskets, transmission mounts and some hardware when the transmission was removed and reinstalled. Money well spent.

Hi, I really enjoyed the Simplicity of how you explain things. My name is, Michelle, and I have a 2003 Cadillac DeVille DHS, and it just shuts off randomly. I took the car to my local O'Reilly's for them to put their scanner on there and the code PO741 came up. In fact, it was the only code that came up. Now, I was told, by several transmission shops, that to replace my torque converter, would be a waste of time, and if the damage had made it to my torque, then I need to buy a whole transmission. Please help😂
Great video, just a little more information, check also your TCC solenoid as it is much easier to diagnose electrically or electronically than the sealed Torque converter it self.

Is there any way to tell if it's a bad solenoid not pressurizing the lockup clutch that's causing the P0741 code or would a malfunctioning solenoid generate a distinct code? I just don't want to go through the hassle and expense of doing the torque converter if all it needs is a new solenoid.

Hey @50sKid, would love for you to drop your 2 cents on this. My zf-5hp19, W8 Passat, showing the code, however it isn't slipping quite enough to reflect on the tachometer. Are you saying this kit could prevent further damage and keep the transmission alive or am I a goner? My specific code description says: P0741 Torque Converter Circuit Perfomance or Stuck Off Edit: Nevermind, my RPM's on the freeway going 80 are 3,000, time for a new torque converter.
Hey man, I still have this code in my car. car runs smooth as ever and much better than any other flawless car . I took it to couple of mechanics to fix this but they are all saying different things. One told me this code was coming up because of the solenoid and changed it for $400 but the code keeps coming back again and again..What exactly should I need to replace?
i had the po741 code come on my 02 330i at about 50k miles. i took it to a shop and they wanted $5k to put in a new trans. seeing that it still drove like normal i decided if i am going to spend 5k might as well wait for it to be fully dead. the car now has 165k miles on it and its still running on that trans. The only thing is that this code is a emissions code and in my area causes it not to pass. i just spend $150 every couple of years to get around that with a waiver . these older BMW are money pits if one does not wrench on them themselves.
I get around this by resetting codes and staying away from freeways. Within two weeks all monitors are complete except evap, which is fine in California. Have passed smog test four times doing it this way.

Jason great video finally a fix for the annoying P0741 code , I've been living with it for a year . So I need to change the pressure regulator and that will fix it ? Get your PO box I will send you a box of avocados lol they are worth they weight in gold !!
Great video. Kinda scary to think i may have to replace the converter. Cant afford that right now. I was told that there is a solenoid that may be bad. I have a 2008 GMC envoy. I had my motor replaced with one that had 46K on it. The car itself now has 165k on the tranny. I'm contemplating changing fluid filter and solenoid. And pray for the best.
This particular cause of the P0741 code is specific to this transmission only. Namely, the seal blowing out inside the TC because of the pressure regulator. On your transmission, the cause of that code could be entirely different. It could have nothing to do with the oil circuit inside of the TC and it could be a problem with that circuit in the transmission itself. It could indeed be the solenoid that is involved in that circuit. I would do more research on your particular vehicle's common problems. You may find a common solution that is much cheaper than what someone with a BMW would have to do!
Hello, I just had my 2003 BMW 530i with 204K diagnosed from getting the dreaded P0741 code. The shop told me to not bother putting any money into the car because it wasn't worth it. I never had the transmission fluid replaced because I didn't know. It's running good with the occasional slip, more like a hiccup and the RPM may hang at 3,000 at 80 mph; but, not all the time, rarely. I just put new tires, struts, tie rods, oil cover gasket and water pump. I would like to, at least, run the car for as long as I can to get my money's worth on the recent repairs. I have the kit to change the transmission fluid and bought the LUCAS additive, just in case it's not recommended to change the fluid. I was wondering if I should replace the transmission pressure regulator, install a new torque converter or just do the regulator and LUCAS additive or just add LUCAS additive alone. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the awesome videos.
I'm thinking of buying a 2002 330i with the M54B30 in it. The guy selling it describes it as "starting in a higher gear than it should, but once you get going, it seems fine". What could be the problem that he's describing? I know I'm being a bit vague here, but that's what he told me. The car is very cheap and I'm looking to buy, drive for a bit, and then resell. hi , just got the dreaded p0741 code -will do the pressure regulator change as you suggest asap. Car drives fine , 325i 2001 e46 , no hesitation . Only 2 issues are a small oil leak front of engine - will determine from where . And What I want to ask is , I also have a whine that goes up and down with the rpms "around" the transmission area.Could this indicate anything? possibly still the regulator valve? help.....!!!!
Jason I have been watching your videos for quite some time. My BMW 503i 2001 is throwing P0741. I drove at 80MPH and the RPM is around 2700. Should I change the torque converter or just the pressure regulator valve. Also if the converter seal inside is worn out will it leaks the transmission oil? Thanks
03 325i cog light came on. I believe it might have came on after the car was going backwards while in Drive, It stuck in 3rd gear I believe. Can you make a video on what can trigger this circuit?

I realized i didn't reconnect the cable by the lower radiator hose (not the sensor that connects to the radiator but the cables on top that seem to disconnect together) Please get back to me, thank you so much once again!
Thank you for all the videos you do. I have an unrelated question that I hope you can answer in a future video. My 2003 330i has a p0441 code. A symptom I've been having for a while is I can never fill up my gas tank without it clicking off prematurely, and It seems to be getting worse as time goes by. I usually leave the gas station in frustration as I can never get it past 3/4 full. Research has led me to believe that I have a problem with my carbon canister, which is why the gas nozzle clicks off early. On my last fill up, however, I couldn't get the tank past 3/4 full no matter how hard I tried. It would keep clicking off when I got to that point as if i were trying to top off the tank. That has led me to believe I have a problem with my fuel level sender. My question is do I possibly have a problem with both the canister because the gas clicks off randomly while I fill it up, and the fuel level sender because it won't let me get past 3/4 full? Thanks. I hope I didn't write that confusingly.
Ah I thought I had replied to you when you first asked the question. Basically your vent valve is stuck shut, which causes the fuel pump to shut off when you're filling. Ratchets and wrenches did a great video on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p9wRD_Dwt8g.html -- I do believe I have a bad vent valve lying around. I will do my own video on it.
Any ideas on P0744 on 2001 Nissan Maxima with Jatco RE4F04A transmission (at least it is not CVT) Fluid was very dark so I changed it twice (doing a 3 drain-fill to do a flush). Miles: 205K it was shifting at 4K rpm on all gears and delayed engagement. Drain-Fill 1 ; fluid very dark/black brown, didn't smell bad or have metal flakes 1 gal out , IN 3 qts (Valvoline MaxLife synthatic ATF) + 24 oz Lucus in it was alot better and the more it was driven the better it got. but P0744 kept coming back Drain-Fill 2 : 3-4k miles later fluid black again but with a reddish tint 1 gal out, IN 3 qts (Valvoline MaxLife synthatic ATF) + 24 oz Lucus in its was better for the 1-2 shift but still P0744 comes up mostly now for > 50mph. instead of < 50mph. I highly suspect I have sticking Solenoid and/or Valve. My next steps are using SeaFoam Trans Tune in the Transmission trying to clean any varnish, and clean out stuff on valve body. after adding the Trans Tune will drive car 30-1000 miles before doing the 3rd and final ATF drain-fill.. hopefully this will do it. if it doesn't then I am going to have to open up the transmission This car doesn't get driven that much , its my son's first car now and use to be mine. transmission issues did not show up untill 3-4 months after he got the car. Doh I wish it was a stick shift wouldn't have this issue.
I have a 325i 2004 with auto transmission with the manual option as well, I have a bad TCC so driving in auto it will shift from 1st and jump to 4th and will not shift any further So I tried using manual transmission option, it still let you shift from 1 to 5 and 5 to 1 since it's quite costly to replace the TCC going to drive in the Manual mode for the time being
Technically speaking, on a 2004 Toyota Corolla 1.8 VVT-i with the U341E 4-speed automatic transmission, it could be possible to modify the activation threshold of the torque converter lock-up clutch from, let's say, 48 mph to 160 mph? Doing so, that clutch would never engage and the drive would be more confortable and linear, despite the fuel consumption being slightly higher.
hello @50sKid thank you for sharing your knowledge ; i have a ZF6HP19 Transmission on my e60 BMW ; i am having this P0741 Fault code; as i know this transmission engages the TCC much more than the ZF5HP19 Transmssion ; it almost engages it at all gears...i am really confused wether it is the same issue you are explaining on the zf5hp19 transmissions or it has another type of issue ; thank u in advance
What I explain in this video is particular to this exact transmission and doesn't necessarily apply to others. In your case the code could be caused by a solenoid impairing the torque converter circuit or maybe a worn valve component in the valve body.
Took my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero to the dealership with the same code and it would start slipping when it was shifting into 3rd gear. They said the only option was to replace the transmission ($1800). I left as the car is 17 years old and not worth $1800. Is replacing the transmission the only option to fix this issue?
So your saying I could drive the car with the po741 code and get less gas mileage but really recommend changing the pressure regulator from the transmission
Help... I recently got that same code p0174 on a 2005 Cadillac DeVille. I haven't noticed anything different about its transmission... it accelerates just fine there's no noise coming from it. What if I just leave it alone would it be okay?
I need help with my bmw, I need to know what is happening with my transmission, when I put it in drive everything is fine but when I put it in reverse sometimes it fails do I need to replace the whole transmission or is it some sensor that isn't working. last month I changed the transmission fluid I checked the level but the reverse still doesn't work sometimes, what do you recommend ?

"Engine Lite" came on, tested -"Code PO740-indicates a fault in the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid electrical circuit for a predetermined period of time" Is it possible to install a new Torque Converter Solenoid wrong if this code reappears back again? Ok so the cog light had disappeared for like a week then it appeared again and my service engine soon light came on and the code I got was p0734 gear 4 incorrect ratio. By any chance you know what can fix this? It says replace transmission control relay but I wanna ask you before I start doing unnecessary things.

Love your videos. Long time viewer. I recently began having the warning light come on next to my drive indicator (wheel w/! in the middle). It's happened after long drives, 200 miles +. Just before it goes on the rpms are high as if it doesn't want to shift. Once the light goes on it shifts normal again. It's a 2004 330xi. Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

My 2002 Olds Alero is showing both a P0730 and a P0741 code. Went to the dealership and they said they would need to replace my transmission with a rebuilt one for $1800. I'm not sure if I want to pay the dealership or just get a new car. Thoughts?
@@thenman23 I didn't do anything. One day it was working and shifting normally, the next day, it wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. It only has 160K miles. Luckily I only live 10 minutes away from work, so I can drive it there and back doing 30 to 35mph. No way was I gonna put that much money into an 18 year old car for a rebuilt transmission with a 6 month warranty. I keep the oil changed and brakes in good shape, and other small stuff, but that's about it. I'll keep driving this car till it won't run no more!
Hmmm... thing is I don't know if a bad actuator would cause a code or not. I would assume it does, though, you know? However it's really easy to test when you have the pan down--unplug it and jumper it directly to 12v. You'd hear the click.
Does any other codes pop up? I actually had this happen to me about 5 months ago. What I actually did was Changed the "AT Solenoid (Pressure Regulator) - Genuine BMW 24341423369" & did a TC-Rebuilt. My check Engine has never came on since then.

eldin dukic is it a vacuum leak . clean your maf sensor with CRC Maf cleaner at autozone . see if that helps . If not a leak in the intake boot or 02 sensor
thanks, I tried all that , got new maf , new 02 sensors, replaced fuel ,air filter , new boot , new spark plugs , and still that code , am like so over it, only thing left is to try used gem maf from e bay , cause I was in a hurry and need a car to run son got new maf from auto zone , duralast brand , I know I know but I took a chance , because when I was cleaning my old maf I drop it and wire inside broke , so car does run ,but it doesn't have power on low end , so must be auto zone maf

My car has the same code, I been driving it for a while now. The torque converter would only lockup at 75mph or higher, some time it doesn't lockup at all. Any speed lower than 75 mph, the tc would unlock. My question is what's the normal tc locked up speed?

You misunderstood me, I did not mean that there was air inside the torque converter. I did say fluid. I was using an analogy that the fluid is the "air" in my earlier example of the two desk fans.
