omg!!! thanx for ur video!!! u save my time :) today I looked for change it and I decided to do that tomorrow because I thought I have to take off intake manifold BUT I see it's very easy :)
Very impressive! My hat is off to any who can do this with the intake in place. I have an E70 X5 and it was a bear with the intake off. I could not even find the controller until the manifold was off. By far the worst part was removing the connectors. I finally got the large one on the controller off using a needle nose vice grip to pinch the tabs. Did not have enough strength in my fingers. I had to break one on the intake manifold to get it off. I also dropped a small intake gasket and can not find it. Hope it did not fall into the intake port! Tried vacuuming and magnets, but did not find it.
nearly impossible to get the plugs in and out, horrid job, taken me hours so far, just can't get it back in. Do you have to lock the big plug in by pulling the tabs on the side out or should it click in place?
great video!! some of the forums say that you have to remove intake manifold. Can this be done with all e60 models without taking manifold off? I have e60 520d. All glow plugs showing error so thinking of changing this first.
With cold engine and broken relay was some smoke from exhaust? Have just glow plug relay fault and when engine is cold car smoking, mechanic said DPF was removed. BTW great job at weekend I will replace controller and gonna see.
Very helpful. I just did this on my E70 X5. Taking off the intake won't be any help if you don't change the glow plug. You should disconnect the connector and measure the glow plug resistance first. The left four pin holes in the first row, and the left two pin holes in the second row, should all be around 1.5 oms to the ground. I didn't watch the video carefully. So I accessed the connectors from the above. The room between coolant pipes is very small. Actually, I should unlock the connectors from the bottom. You will understand what I am saying when you pull the module out. There is plenty of space at the bottom.
Thanks for the info. Actually I ended up calling a local BMW specific shop who had done this before and quoted me half hour labor to do the work. I had taken the engine cover off already. I took the car to the shop to confirm it is indeed half an hour and they confirmed. I dropped the car off in the morning, took uber to work, they called me in the afternoon, picked up the car and all was well. Shop owner said that his tech couldn't get the larger connector off, so he asked the owner to take on that task himself. The owner did take it off, but ended up scraping his wrist area, but all was done in about half an hour anyway. I was so happy to have avoided the pain of removing this part from the tight spot for all of $75 in labor! The whole thing (part from ECS Tuning) and labor cost me about $220 all included. Very happy. :)
When you mentioned "engine cover", you mean the intake manifold? It took me 2.5 hours to replace the controller. But I did it very slow and carefully. The big connector was a headache. Disconnect the connectors first before removing the screws. Watch the video at 6:04, your hand should go up from the bottom. There is enough room there. Glad you have it fixed!
This is not for the butter fingers guys.. I’d drop it in the engine bay within minutes with the screws 😂 Would like to have a go with connectors as not working anyway wat I got to lose. Got 5 faults so very likely it’s relay. They want £100 labour and £150 parts.
