I had the same problem, so I replaced the original aluminium balast box. Unfortunately within a week it was full again. ..so I drilled lots of 3mm holes on the underside of the original box to let the water out. ( which luckily worked after drying it. The cheep ones on eBay have fewer components inside and don't support adaptive lighting) It's worked perfectly for over a year. I might record it and put it on utube.

I have hear show some people put a hole into the bottom. Did you take any photos of the work?

@@mrgcc Yes I've got photos. ..actually I bought one ballast box on eBay and swapped it for the original one. The replaced part filled up with water so I bought a second one from eBay and drilled holes in both the original one and the second replacement. Thankfully the original one worked. ..this is my preference as it supports the adaptive lights. So...I have two spare ones from eBay now. I'll put a short recording on utube of the one with the holes if it helps...look for : BMW E63 LIGHT BALLAST HOLE SOLUTION

@@mrgcc Yeah it is! I also had to take my bumper off to get the headlight out. I ran some Mastic around my (globe access ports) after unfortunately having to replace my ignitigter ballast, my original was so full water! But all good now 👍

Thank you for informative video Re headlights. I have BMW650I 2007 model. Had an issue with driver side headlight not working. Took it to the garage I was told both sides cables needs replacement as well as driver side ballast. They replaced all cables both side, cleaned and polished as well used ballast but in working condition. After doing all that? Now both headlights are not working. The full deem working as well as the parking etc apart from the headlights. I was charged £160 BUT need to take the car for electric checking. When I called the second garage the guy told me most likely the sockets or the cables are not functioning well with the ballast! Basically am having to spend around £50 for checking the previous job not well done. I was also told there was no need for coding for replacing the ballast. So your video made me wonder if the cables are damaged. Thanks once again. Please advise.

I have a e92 335i LCI I’ve replaced the glue in the headlight twice with OEM glue. Put in new clips that hold the light together and I still get water in them. The lens and housing have no cracks. New lights are about $3,500 USD. So that’s not really a option. I’ve replaced the ballast twice now because of the water killing it. Also had to replace the adaptive headlight module.

Have you replaced the rear bulb access caps? Maybe the seals on that have gone bad? Another thing I would suggest is maybe getting second hand ones if you really can't find a fix, water MUST be getting in some way. Just a matter of finding out where!

@@mrgcc yeah I e looked into that. The gasket for the bulb cap on the back is in good shape. Has 5 torx screws that hold it on and those are nice and tight. Even used headlights with modules I’m still looking at about $2,000. I’m thinking about putting on new glue and using aquarium silicone around the outside edge of the housing where the lens and bucket meet.

With that trick I would suggest not to glue tape to turn signal assembly. When car vibrates, tape will finally get loose and tape takes along black paint from under side of turn signal. That defect would be visually noticeable. I had one of previous owners done that to my car and now I need to get new turn signal.

ahh that sucks, sorry to hear that you have had issues but did you get much water going to your headlights with it fixed and new turn signals?

How well did it work in the long term? I have this issue on 550i adaptive xenon's. $1500 each for replacements. My thought is to use a hair dryer and dry the inside out. Then drill a small hole into the backside of the housing, then feed in compressed air and use a soapy water spray and look for bubbles.

it worked really well for a while until I took the bumper off again to do other work. It has let a small amount of water back in time to time but nothing anywhere near as back as before. I would suggest changing the caps for the bulbs. I hear that can be a cause to the fault too.
