After year 2008, BMW produced differentials with welded ring gear to a carrier unit. This video shows you how to upgrade such differential to LSD by installing the RacingDiffs Progressive LSD conversion set. This video refers to 188LW and 215LW differential type.

What are then names of flanges are ground down 4mm? and is this a requirement? What is the purpose of that?

That needs to be done in order to make a clearance for conversion kit.

Yes, but which flanges? Axle side? The axle on the 128i has the flange. The input shaft on the driveshaft side?

Does the oil need to be 75w-140 now in that diff case? or still 75w90?

Yes, it requires 75w140 LSD oil. We recommend Motul Gear Competition

While i like the product....since i have to apparently machine the damn ring gear I'd just upgrade to a wavetrack or quaife. This takes out the stock weak inner gear and pin. Installation without having to machine would be totally different

How do you imagine installing any aftermarket LSD solution without machining the ring gear off??

@RacingDiffs ahh...thought there was both room and an access hole to remove the pin to slide in the unit much like similar kits for earlier chevy open diffs. This would still be cheaper but I feel with the cost of machining I'd just replace the whole unit to something far stronger overall. Otherwise a nice product, just not for me. I also have the option to buy the factory bmw lsd rear pumpkin, which costs about the same as doing a wavetrac...just no down time...plus an extra diff should tragedy strike

A factory BMW LSD unit for F30? Never seen one of those except in M3 F80 that doesn't fit even close. Anyways, appreciate the comments 👍🏻

Intalling the same kit on 215 diff, what gas do you use for welding, Argon or Co2 ?

In this video we used argon, but cam be done with co2 as well.

Great work. I see at 9:23 the oil seal bearing housing is scored/gouged/pitted. in the process of changing my half shaft output seals I have managed to gouge the oil seal housing surface right where the seal sits 😖. The oil seals I was suggested to use apparently don’t require any sealant applied around them,I was hoping I could file down the gouge and apply sealant to take up the void I created, any thoughts? The diff is the M Performance lsd for the bmw F series platform. Many thanks if you could get back to me with any advice. All the best, Ant.

Dear Ant, we recommend sealant even in case of full rubber seals. It won't do any harm. We suggest to use sand paper to get smooth surface as much as possible and return seal with sealant paste.

So if I mailed you guys a diff, you'd install is for 300? Wonder what two way shipping is from the states for a ready to install diff. Still under the price of the other options I bet. Even better is if you guys could source a diff locally to avoid double shipping... Something to think about.

@jf269 I'm afraid that shipping from states to hear would be tremendously expensive. We have the best possible contract with DHL and shipping for the complete diff is about 400 usd.

With all that work, you might as well just install a real LSD.

This is even more complicated as you have to drill the crown gear and make threads in something that is super hard (60Hrc). Also you have to set backlash too.
