Thanks for posting this video! It helped me drain my radiator so that I can take it off and figure out how to fix this damn leak! Also, you always have great music playing in the background. I appreciate your video series on all these maintenance and repair tips!

Thanks for the video! I've had this problem for years where not all the coolant would drain, I learned today it was because of a faulty thermostat. Not sure how the bike has continued to run this long without further problems but needless to say the thermostat is being replaced!

Good vid thank u. Just thought I’d post to help someone else out I was having trouble getting the clip for the thermostat back in. It would get caught and not slide through easily. turns out I didn’t have the thermostat pushed up far enough into the radiator when reinstalling it. Hope this helps someone out. Just push it up ever so slightly more and hold it there and the clip should go thru smoothly.

Ugh. The one part I need help on is glossed over. I took out the clip but I can't get the thermostat free. Every time I start putting a screw driver in it starts sounding expensive.
@billsq4
@billsq4 5 лет назад
I offer my approach to the clip re-install...try it without the thermostat housing. It seems there are a couple of approaches..from the front and the back of the unit. For removal Tugging downward with only a slight rocking motion did it. Remember caution with the little tab that is on the rearward side of the "Unit". PS I already hate this clip and the installation.

Nice...At 7:17 I broke the surround for the clip.accidentally,while trying to pry it open....both sides actually,much to my horror....still no movement I had to rev the bike to build up pressure ,and it unexpectedly exploded open..My face was two inches away at the time.>Scalding Coolant all over my face,at least none in my eyes......I didn't make a video.XD Long story short,My thermostat was broken,the spring had smashed loose of the plastic casing....So will be replacing that soon,but now need to make some kind of assembly to keep the Thermostat cover in the radiator housing,as the part the holding clip would have depended on is no more..... Can't say I'm a fan of the build quality of this bike......another example,The water pump assembly is designed to fail. Other than that,I like the ride,though it be a little under powered at times...
@JosephMelia
@JosephMelia 5 лет назад
Wound up buying a new thermostat and radiator...had a professional fit it...so much for saving money..it was working for a couple months after that...now need to change the coolant again...won't go near the thermostat this time... The radiator cap is giving me problems. weak hands...I know how to remove it,ie push down and turn and then repeat to clear the plastic nubs...I have managed it before on the old rad.....but on this one....the thing just won't come loose...so emptying and refilling is impossible.... Any tips on safely removing the rad cap? On my last radiator,I learned that my friend ,when faced with a similar problem,had used a pliers..but I don't want to damage the cap.......I know about the pressure valve in them,and how delicate they are.

Well. Nice video. I changed yesterday the coolant of my bike. I had never changed it since I bought. At the point of removing the thermostat as showed in the video, me and my friend after removing the clip we were trying to pry it open. But as it was not coming off ( afraid of breaking it) we decided to leave it alone and installing back the clip. It took us almost one hour to realize that the thermostat (the bottom) was half a millimeter out and not lined up with the body. Uh. Finally with pliers I squeezed the thermostat against the body and the clip was back in. We should have removed it and after cleaning should have applied silicon paste that you did.

I know this was two months ago, but for anyone else- you just need to take off the seat, then undo the screws on the top panel and then the side panel you're removing. There should be 6 easy to see ones and then 2-4 more down by the seat

Nice video.Thx ... you mention that the fan goes on frequently, which it does. But the overtemp light also comes on on my bike after ~15 minutes of driving, even in very cold weather. Is this a common problem on a 1999 F650GS? New sensor? New thermostat perhaps? Thanks for any input...
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad 9 лет назад
***** I would start with the thermostat and then go with a sensor from there.
@MotoCampAdventure
@MotoCampAdventure 9 лет назад
***** Maybe this is obvious, but does it have enough coolant running through the system? The radiators on the F650 GS are apparently notorious for leaking if whoever owned it before didn't get it replaced under warranty. I guess they had a bad vender for the radiators for some time. I'm currently fixing my leaky radiator on my 01 F650 GS.

There is a VW that use the exact same thermostat, only cheaper from vw... There might be an airlock in the coolant system.

Question - does it get heat up quickly? I just bought 2013 and drove 2 miles, the fan came on and I can feel the heat on my left leg and the radiator pipe was pretty hot
@andresarango3579
@andresarango3579 2 года назад
common complaint among riders of this bike. I have one 2013 myself and can tell you "you will feel that heat when the fan comes on" but as long as you are riding the wind can compensate for that. If you are riding in the city, at slow speeds or in a traffic jam, you are out of luck.
