Hi Gauge is for checking if bearing journals are oversize as the gauge is tapered if it goes to flange it is worn oversize they were supplied by vandervel bearing

Thanks Dave.. spot on

If those dowels on the block face are hollow if you fill them and the gap underneath with grease you might be able to tap them out hydraulically. It certainly worked for me in getting a B series spigot bearing out. Just put the crank on end, filled the bushing with grease and tapped a snug fitting drift into it. Apologies if this is old info.

The Hepolite machine would be nice cleaned up, if you refurb it totally it may not be quite so cool and original.
@graceenginedevelopments
@graceenginedevelopments Год назад
I agree.. I'll wash it first then see what's left

With the old Hepolite gauge I'd certainly start with a good clean to see how much grime is embedded. If it won't tidy up, then consider a careful recoat. I'm sure there's some trick machine finish you could apply to the measuring surface to really make it sing. I'd put it in one of yr glass cabinets in the shop - you'll get visitors asking you to demo it. As for that Vandervell gauge - well I can only guess. They made bearings, so I reckon with those Ford markings it would have been used to gauge main or big end bearing dimensions of particular engines - whether they needed oversize bearings or machineing. Am I even close?!
@graceenginedevelopments
@graceenginedevelopments Год назад
Hi Rob, yes a good clean is first.. I like original look but would also like it immaculate.. you are virtually bang on with the gauge but I will show it off in the next video.

Nice work on the BMW block, I was surprised with how much meat was still there after taking it out to size, great video again, love the vintage tooling, I’d clean it up and see how it looks then make a decision as you mentioned it was flaking, either way it would look cool, be nice for everyone to see it as long as it doesn’t get messed with eh

Yeah I was surprised as well.. the customer has sent some videos of it on the rolling road, I'll post the soon.. sounds mega.. yeah I'm going to restore it nice I think

I would put the Hepolite machine in the board room/office. You seem quite attached to it and if its on the counter chances are it will get broken. I would restore it and you can watch it patina in your ownership and pass it on......just a thought. 👌🏻

It's definitely cool . Yeah I think I'm keeping it in the office mate.. just completely unsure about restoration

Tough decision with the Hepolite machine, I’d probably opt for restoring it but would look great either way. If you opt for cleaning it all up we have a vapour blaster if you ever need anything cleaning up 👍

You could give the Hepolite piston measurer to me to go with my Hepolite pistons in my 1960 Rover P4, 6 Cylinder, I.O.E 2625cc. Massive 104 BHP ! which I've owned for the last 49 years ! I hope you can still get the Hepolite Pistons, otherwise I'm stuffed ! Other than that Leave the Patina ! Just clean and polish it, with a soft cloth ! Take care James ! Just found your site and have been Binge watching it !

Ah the struggle of how much to restore something. I agree with you, but there is no point restoring something to brand new in my book. Yes the mechanics can and should be, but the look has to be retained. Well that is my view. Where to put it depends on how precious it is to you.

IM wondering that there is enough meat t bore to 85mm, I woud duble check how much thickness is left of the cylinder walls. There is a possibility that the cylinders will bend and become a wider shape, thats why I didnt try to bore the 80mm block to 84mm. But you did 85mm!
@graceenginedevelopments
@graceenginedevelopments Год назад
I was worried about it too.. but the customer said it's a done mod and to carry on.. it still had a fair bit of cast there.. I can't remember of the top of my head what the measurement was.

Cylinder walls on M20 are typically 5,5-6 mm.

325i/ 525i and 325e/ 525e/ Alpina and Hartge 2.7 M20s are 84mm bore from factory. People got to 85.5mm bore on these. The 80mm from factory is for 320i/520i and 323i M20 engines
@bmwmaster81
@bmwmaster81 9 месяцев назад
In general although it can be done, it is risky because of casting shift and error. I did from 84mm to 86mm easy. But from 80mm to 84mm could lead to cracks or cylinder bore deformation. The 320 blocks have different casting, no cooling bored etc.

when installing the snaprings for the pistons, arent you supposed to use the indent on the piston to leverage a pick or small flat head like tool to pop the ring in? I always thought this was that indents purpose
