What about a 2.0 Diesel Drag Race with just different cars? Like for example: Octavia 2.0, Golf 2.0, A4/A3 2.0 etc. Would be interesting to see how the same engine performs in different cars.
Atarv Hegde I’m sure the M8 could’ve got a faster time in that, but that’s impressive considering an R8 is a fully fledged super car and an M8 is a 4 door gram coupe

Yes that will always be the case I don't know why they're putting tiny engines in cars even the old 1.8 2L they had plenty of power these new ones are garbage
1. Yes 2. An A45S (2.0) is faster than a Mustang GT (5.0), for example. In terms of performance, that statement isn't true. However, numbers do not equal enjoyment...there's 0 chance I'd swap my 981CS for a 718 even if it is faster.
@@harrison4548 Care to provide any independently-tested evidence of that? I've seen someone claiming my car can do it in 3.9, which I'm sure it would with the right hill and tailwind...but it can't really, I'll believe the majority that put it at 4.5-4.7s. I'm not saying you're lying, just that we need some evidence.
Wow, the Estate Cars are really doing well to be running in the 12 seconds bracket because 34 years ago, my street Corolla was doing a blistering 12.1 seconds on the 1/4 mile when all others were in the 18-second bracket. So keeping things into perspective, you can still have quick cars ideally suited for the family.
Actually, a drag race and a comparison test in the same video would be even better. We haven't seen many test videos in some time. Well, I guess the races get more clicks so..
There is an older video where Matt sat in a Volvo S60. The race includes the M340i sedan, Audi S4 diesel and Mercedes E53 AMG. Results are pretty much the same though lol.
@@ravenheart369 Same reason why electric cars have such bad top speeds, the amount of energy to speed up at 100+ miles is much larger than 0-60 where electric cars like Teslas shine, of course this wouldn’t be a problem if charging was as quick as filling up. The upcoming EV HyperCars can reach 200+ miles but that’s what you should expect from a multi-million price point.
@@ravenheart369 Well it has a combustion engine at the front and an electric engine at the back… there is no gearbox on the electric engine, and as we all know engines can just rev to a certain limit. So at a certain speed the electric engine turnes of so it won't get damaged.
@@Christs_Apologet I’m talking about Rimac C2, lotus Evija, Pininfarina Batista and things like that. Tesla’s look boring the model s is pretty bland and they were saying the roadster was coming out in 2020 so I will believe it when I see it (announced in 2017 and will come out after cyber truck and semi so probably late 2022 - 2023)you can barely take a model 3 round the track for more than 30-40 minutes continuously so they still have a long way to go. The roadster will still be great value even if it underperforms on what’s been promised.

@@atarvhegde5210 You can't generalize it for Volvos. It's got a strong and heavy electric motor which basically produces no power at high RPM. That's why at high speeds, an electrical motor doesn't help and the car propably only has 300 hp at that point
@@Introgamer14 Well we didn't say Volvo to put a electric motor in there. On the plus side: The Volvo is easy to tune because it has a supercharger ( if you can easily access it). Also the new Volvos aren't really designed with fun and preformance in mind. And yes , maybe I shouldn't generalize that for Volvos.
Turbo for torque in high revs and compresser for torque in low revs , makes it feel like driving electic ... what he also does at rear wheels . Must be a great feeling of power
FYI: the bird flying off there is faster then any of the tested cars. It's the fastest animal on our planet, the Perigrin Falcon. The scientific literature tracked one with a sensor on it's back doing 325 km/h in a angled skydive.

Would be interesting to know the MPGs they got during the races🤔. All well and good them being quick but if they can be quick and efficient that'll give the diesel and hybrid power trains a purpose
All I can really give you is that me and my cousin work at the same place and drive the same journey every day with a similar driving style. I have the s4 saloon (2021) and he has the m340i (2020) and I average 46.2 mpg, he gets 29. The difference is pretty substantial I'd say. I love having 99% of the power but 150% of his fuel economy 😂
The M340i has a much nicer interior I'd say. Not a fan of the Volvo focus on the big vertical screen, plus it's a bit low down. I've been extremely critical of BMW interiors for ages but the new ones are actually pretty good. I'd imagine they're all pretty decent to live with, but the BMW engine makes it far more special. ...full disclosure, if I wanted a practical car again, I wouldn't buy any of these.
@@jameswingrove7421 Good question...M340i I reckon is 3rd on my list. 1st would be a Lexus GS450h. It's not perfect- launches like a boat and the steering does lack feel plus it has limited lateral grip so definitely not a track toy. 30-150mph it's identical to the M340i though, but with Bentley levels of luxury (moisturising aircon anyone?), gets 50mpg on a run or round town and has great handling balance- loses grip but is insanely easy to control. Sadly this car stopped production in 2018 so used only, but it's a Lexus, they basically don't age. 2nd choice for me would be the Peugeot 508 PSE. Looks basically like a more exciting version of the Volvo. One of the sexiest cars around both inside and (especially) out. Also 50-75mph (80-120kmh) in 3.0s, bearing in mind I can't even find a claimed time for the BMW better than 3.3. It's not faster than the BMW down a 1/4 mile I'd imagine but that proves it's got some shove! Bit long, but I'm a big fan of those 2 cars. M340i is still a great car though, Volvo isn't bad either, I just don't find it exciting.
@@ApothecaryTerry You wouldn’t buy the Lexus for a dynamic driving experience (with exception to the F models). I’m a big fan of the 508’s styling and to my eyes it is the best looking mid size executive saloon on the market at the moment. Not bad choices but for me I’d probably take a very lightly used and rare Volvo V60 Polestar.
@@jameswingrove7421 In the case of the GS450h you absolutely would...you won't find many cars better balanced on the limit (including any F models) and with relatively narrow tyres (235) and loads of power the limit is easy to find. LC500 also beat the DB11 in a handling test, so no dynamic issues there. Any other non-F Lexus cars aren't great dynamically though these are definitely exceptions. Old IS250/350 was the only other fairly good chassis. Edit: I suppose an obvious thing to say is that the GS has whooped the Panamera in a few road tests. It's a crazy car. The polestar has decent performance but the Pug is just a bit better in every way. The V60 beats the GS to 30mph (as do most things) but the GS is in its own league at high speeds, plus has that epic handling and obviously is incomparable for luxury and reliability. The V60 also isn't exactly efficient in comparison to either. If you want something a bit more raw the the V60 ticks that box best, but to be honest at that money...well that's why I drive a 981 Cayman S. I'd say the V60 is most closely comparable to an A45, and I'd take it over one of those.
Fast wagons are a weird combo of fun and practical. Even though its the slowest of the 3 I'd still take the Volvo, it's *nearly* as fast as the others but still gives 130mpg which is pretty awesome.
Here you can clearly see how a petrol performance engine performs to a so called diesel contender. The petrol has a bit more power, but the difference is quite big. Also, those BMW B58 engines (this is the M-Performance tuned version) are very good. The maximum torque is a on a big rpm range, the maximum power as well. The gearbox is also top on its class. Great powertrain, I had that on a X3 M40i, such an incredible car.
Yea. the 3.0 V6 TDI is a great engine in a "normal" A4 but for a S4 variant they should have brought the 3.0 TFSI V6 available on non Euro markets. Possibly with a 48V mild hybrid system as well.
@@enicaeduard I'm from the UK mate. I own a 3l v6 turbo petrol Audi S4. This was filmed about 2 hrs from where I live. The v6 petrol S4 is available all over the world. Not sure what 'Europe' has to do with this..did you assume I'm from the USA?
I loved the R8 drag race where you raced all of the R8 models so we could see how they compare over time. Do more of those eg. race all 911 models, all V12 Lamborghini models...
Hey Mat, just an FYI: the Volvo actually does have a launch function. It’s in the owners manual and is called “launch function” under starting and driving in the book. Also... not for nothing but the Polestar Engineered V60 is the direct competition for these models in Volvo’s lineup, not the regular T8’s.
"Go!" says Matt and stays the last... This actually is the biggest uncertainty about Hybrid cars. They talk about fuel efficiency from using the electrict drive, but it adds 200-300 kilos to weight, which literally makes the fuel saving questionable overall.
I used to own a 2012 Lexus GS450h (L10). Got 47-48mph on a run (including 1.5 hours in London rush hour) and yet from 30-70 it would drop my 981 Cayman S...and basically anything else it wanted to. 200hp electric motor (more than an F1 car's motor...always nice!) strapped to the engine out of an Evora, those things are monsters. Also, battery placement meant it handled like it's mid-engined. I say that with the aforementioned 981 as my daily ☺ That Lexus was more powerful, at least 20% more efficient and about 150kg lighter than the new Audi S6 (euro-spec TDi). Quattro/launch control and 8 years of tech get the Audi to 60 a full 0.1 secs quicker too, I'd bet on the GS down a slip road any day! Hybrids are great, just not many manufacturers have worked out how to make them into decent performance cars yet. Other than than the GS450h, LC500h and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (name is so long the badge weighs 20kg), I've not come across any vaguely "normal" hybrids that get the performance stuff right. Some are fairly quick- Volvo T8s and BMW activehybrids, but they just need time to work out handling. I don't think any except Lexus design their cars from the start for battery placement and even Lexus only get it right with a couple of cars, the IS300h is a lovely comfy ride but the handling is meh at best.

Mat, you should have used the Volvo V60 T8 Polestar Engineered to make it an even race. Especially the brake test, as the polestar engineered has brembo brakes.
Mat i don't know How difficult It is to find in UK, but would be awesome to see what the Audi Q7 V12 TDI could perform against other SUVs in Drag Race and Tug Of War!!!
The Volvo has electric power, for instant torque at 0rpm It has a supercharger for low engine rpm performance. It has a turbo for higher engine speed performance. It has all wheel drive for traction. I am disappoint 👀
