given that the new R makes more HP and torque both below and above 6,000 RPM vs. the previous gen (no flappers), I think it's safe to assume your assumptions regarding the relevance of the flappers might be incorrect. Also, I would suggest looking beyond peak HP ratings at 5-digit RPMs and start to look at which RPMs you ride and where the thrust is produced. For example, the new Tuono right until 5,800 RPM is seriously down on power vs. the R (@ 4,000 RPM it's 75 Nm vs. 90 Nm, @ 5,000 RPM it's 68 vs. 98 Nm etc.). Beyond 6,000 RPM torque between these two bikes is absolutely identical. Accelerate from 50 kph in 3rd gear, and after 3 seconds the tuono is 10 kph slower than the R. Same goes for the comparison with the RR: In the rev range you actually ride (and I hardly ever see you exceed 6,000 RPM) the R will always have more HP and torque than the RR. This has been tested and proven over and over again by independent German and French magazines. So I find it difficult to make statements like "BMW has made a HUGE mistake" or "it's seriously down on power vs. the competition" (0-200 kph it's dead on with the streetfighter V4S). Maybe it's what raises view counts, but I seriuosly suggest looking beyond peak HP claims.
@Bikemax99
@Bikemax99 3 года назад
also @12:40: it's not toned DOWN. It's tuned to bring the torque closer to where you actually spend your time riding, i.e. make it faster in the real world. HP is torque x RPM. Same torque at higher RPM = more peak power on paper. But at the same time it shifts torque (=thrust you can feel) away from where you ride. So once you open the throttle at 5,000 RPM, the nominally higher HP bike will actually be slower, because you gotta wait longer (progress all the way through the rev range) till the powerband comes on.

I believe it, i got my '10 RR a motor swap from a '13 and the tech (who worked for Nate Kern's engine) said his R will smoke any RR until 120mph (and i quote) but still impressive because where would 120+ matter other than the track.

German magazine MOTORRAD in their current issue (10/2021) tested the new S 1000 R vs. the previous gen. New gen wins the comparison (723 vs. 706 points) with wins in every single category. Interesting to see the acceleration figures. Here are the numbers incl. the Italians from previous tests, all tested by the same magazine (Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory / Ducati Streetfighter V4S / 2020 S 1000 R / 2021 S 1000 R): 0-100 kph: 3.2 / 3.3 / 3.3 / 3.2 sec. 0-200 kph: 8.1 / 8.0 / 8.3 / 8.0 sec. power at crank: 176 / 205 / 168 / 171 hp full wet weight (tank 100%): 216 / 208 / 210 / 200 kg (new S 1000 R incl. pillion kit and M package) overall test results: 690 / 704 / 706 / 723 points

Great post .. Those numbers speak for themselves and can’t be denied... for me , the issue is subjective ... I.e. looks !! Best overall bike but without doubt the least appealing on the eye .. The upside is that the problem / choice is a beautiful thing 🤙🏼

The flappers are closed by software in low RPM to pass noise emission tests. It's worse in the US (EPA) than in Europe (Euro5) and hence the difference between the US and Euro versions. This is a problem with the US, not BMW. For example, look at the Honda CRB1000RR-R SP, which is even more defanged than the RR by the EPA. The newer the bike, the more necessary a third-party tune. The great thing about the BMW ECU is that it has wideband sensors and supports full closed-loop tuning. Thus there's no need for a dyno tune. The tune map changes the air/fueling goals and the ECU dynamically executes them regardless of changes in conditions (temp, humidity) and config (exhaust type, fuel type). The Brentuning tune fully opens the intake at the outset. It also fully opens the exhaust valve, which also is closed at low RPM in stock form. Finally, it also fixes the issues with fueling that cause dead spots in the power band. There are other mods to the ECU tune such as making the quickshifter faster. You can do more such as fully removing the flappers and relocating the IAT sensor, but these have minor additional benefits relative to the software part of the tune. But the Brentuning flash won't make the R into the RR. Besides the shiftcam and the wide, rich powerband it gives the RR when tuned, the innards of the RR are metallurgically beefier to enable over 3K more RPM to the rev limiter. The tuned RR will always be a bunch more powerful than the motor of the R/XR (about +40 hp - 205 vs 165 hp).

So glad Brentune is around, I can't recommend them enough for our bikes. I agree BMW missed the mark with these, a milder shiftcam profile would've been awesome, get it into the mid-160 to 170 whp in stock trim to make it stand up among its rivals. My Speed Triple 1200 RS is putting less than 160 to the tire but it's also a bit lighter and with a strong powerband, can't wait to get that one tuned.

Any more bhp on a naked bike is just for bragging rights. I've got this bike in Hockenheim Silver, it has it's faults but power isn't an issue at all. In the real world for road use it doesn't come much better than this

Really like Bogna’s new leathers and helmet! With this engine it seems to me that even with shift-cam you are going to loose midrange torque if you go for more horse power. Personally I think BMW should have fitted the shift-cam in this bike but tuned it for maximum mid-range torque, to hell with the horsepower! 🤪 🇬🇧🏍

Pretty sure those 6K rpm intake flaps are for noise regulations. BMW and all the Japanese manufs will need to follow Triumph/KTM/Ducati/Aprilia with 1100+ cc engines to maintain grunt down low.

Hard to say. Won't know until I get my s1K this week and can develop an unbiased opinion. I test drove the s1K the other day. There are some pluses and minuses between the SF and S1. I will say the S1 has the SF beat in flickability and weight.

@@estebanv4767 gotcha. Trust me, I really love my stealth. Amazing bike. I would say I like the comfort, engine performance better on the SF. I am going to do the brentune on both. The dyno after brentune supposedly bumps it up to 163 at the wheel (150 Rear wheel stock). That's impressive for a tune. But also gets rid of the false ambient air reading which really limits the BMW on the low end of the spectrum. I think it'll make it a totally different bike. I'll have a better opinion after I do that and a few thousand Km on it. Ride safe!

I'm dipping my toes into the naked bike world and I am starting to really dig them for their general rideability for fun and consistent riding! Great video, gotta get rid of that flapper, no one likes a flapper...ahahaha. The problem that I have had with BMW, and this is totally a subjective gripe, they're boring. This sounds crazy, but they do everything so freaking well that they take the drama and excitement out of riding, and offer just pure speed and people develop an unrealistic view of their riding ability because that bike saves you like crazy. When I hop off of a BMW I don't think about it again, it doesn't make me feel anything, and I need a bike to make an impression as they are for pleasure and not business for me, I don't ride them as a commuter.

German track-orientated magazine "PS" ran a comparison of the new single R vs Tuono Factory vs. Speed Triple. R won ex aequo with the Tuono. Things that stood out (R / Tuono / Triple): -weight: 200 (with semi active suspension) / 215 (semi active) / 200 kg (conventional) - dyno HP at crank: 171 / 174 / 181 HP - dyno Nm at crank: 118/119/128 Nm - speed after 3 sec., rolling on at 50 kph in 3rd gear: 115 (!) / 106 / 112 kph - 0-200 kph: 8.0 / 8.2 / 8.3 sec Triples's higher torque is offset by lower max revs and thus required longer gearing. Tuono severely lacking below 6000 RPM In the end none of them were bad. Tuono and R were particularly agile, with the Tuono featuring and impressive chassis, the R being the best all-rounder, while the Triple had a powerful engine, though it lacked low rev manners and a bit of agility.

Peak HP isn't the all be all, average TQ+HP makes an engine much more useful,l rather have -5kg lighter bike than +5hp peak HP Tuono, Streetfighter, KTM, SpeedTriple are all 1100+ engines vs 999cc -10% less power is excusable. I doubt anyone can tune this bike to pass euro5 better than BMW has.
@kdemiranda

So now the independent tests are starting to come out. It’s alway best to compare facts instead of emotions. 205 hp is of course king of the mountain at the bar…but in real life, there is not much difference between these bikes. Mind you I think the SF is a remarkable piece of engineering, the prettiest of them all.
