Hello everyone,
I recently had a problem with my Wife's BMW 1 Series. The problem was that the car overheated and then went into limp mode. I then jumped into my other car and towed her home. Luckily she was only around 6 miles away from home.
After a little investigation, I could find no evidence of a coolant leak or any faults or damage to the radiator or the associated pipework.
Upon arriving at the vehicle in order to tow it home, I noticed that the radiator fan was spinning wildly out of control, seriously faster than it should conceivably do so during normal operation.
This led me to believe that the car had in fact not overheated at all, but actually the coolant temperature switch had failed which in turn was reporting incorrect values. This then manifested itself as an overheat issue despite the fact the coolant and indeed the engine, were well within safe tolerances.
So in this video I will be carrying out a replacement of the coolant temperature switch. It is a simple task that can be easily carried out by anyone with even a very small degree of knowledge and a general toolkit.
The sensor that I fitted can be found at the link below and is very cheap at only around the £15 mark.
