I'd be interested to know just how common these problems are: 1 in 4, 1 in 10, 1 in 100 ...? I have two 2001 530Ds (E39s) with the M57 6 cylinder engine, one has 170,000 miles and the other 173,000 miles. EGRs on both are clean, the injectors are all OK (checked with diagnostic software), neither car has a problem with the crank damper (I recently changed the water pumps on both so have checked the damper), glowplugs are original and fault free. My E39s don't have DPFs. But deleting the DPF and the EGR can stop the car meeting emission controls in the MOT. The swirl flaps are only fitted to the automatic version of some M57s (my automatic had them and I deleted them immediately after buying it) and even then not those fitted to Range Rovers, X5s or Opels. The crankcase breather filter isn't a problem unless the filter isn't replaced or cleaned (later M57 engines have a washable filter). This maintenance item is even missed by BMW dealers. Oil has been changed at 10,000-15,000 miles with top quality oil and filter (no supermarket own brands) The turbo can be an issue, the turbo on my manual E39 let go not long after I bought it but this was put down to it having been sat on garage forecourts for 12-14 months and not having any servicing done, despite what the (non BMW) dealer said. With the exception of the swirl flaps the rest of these "common faults" are down to a lack of proper servicing/maintenance and will affect any similar engine AUDI, Mercedes, PSA, whatever.
Banger video mate! Spot on! All those common problems are checked on my engine. Except for crankcase ventilation filter, I didn't even know it existed lmfao. I heard a slight plasticy vibration sound from that specific corner, I'm replace it straight away. Been driving my m47t2 for 4 years with very good maintenance and feeling stupid for missing it! Btw, I'd recommend deleting the swirlflaps ASAP because its those are a ticking bomb.
i have the M47 in my freelander and I use RED X 1 Shot it decarbs very good in fact I had a glow plug stuck I was recommended Red X 1 shot it got all the carb off and because i had left the glow plug loose it shot out so all I had to do was put a new one in but i tried the rest and they all came out no problem the only trouble with the M47 in a freelander is it is side ways on so getting at the water pump and the crankshaft pulley are bad but doable thanks for the video
You forgot to mention the top turbo vac hose, they give trouble and the old loo roll filter is a lot better but does need to be changed regularly. They're a mighty engine, I've done over 300k with mine and it still runs like a dream and goes like a bomb the secret it to keep it very well serviced on the nail and you'll have no worries.
Regarding the glow plug relay issue, I have had issues for the last 4 years, changing both glow plugs and glow plug relay several times and problems kept coming back. I think the conclusion to my problems was either poorly seated cables to the glow plug relay (seat the cable, push hard while giving it a wiggle to ensure good engagement and lock). It could also have been an issue with the lead cable going from the generator to the relay, which I also replaced (cheap and easy to fix). Not sure which one did the trick, but now everything is perfect.
I recommended to use reamer when changing glow plugs, that carbon in Glow plug hole usually burns new plugs too soon. I did make own reamer from old plug and drillbit, works nice
Glowplug module is easier to reach under the car, I did it month ago. Also later did change all plugs too and i did check if i can reach that module from up and no chance wihtout removing hoses and Cables etc. Its kinda annoying to change from under but doable
Ive got this engine in the E70 X5. Glow plug module went, caused a glow plug to melt the tip on injector 5 which then went and the car wouldnt drive. Two weeks later the it clunks and pops when hard turning on low speed so going in for CV axle replacement. The engine is heavily carbonised too, really badly. Got a very squeaky belt on idle too. Seems never ending with this car! Considering an EGR delete (mapped out) to try and clean some of the carbon out assuming the higher temps will help that!
@@ZeroGravityShisha funny story, went in for CV axle replacement and the garage said there was nothing wrong just some plastic trim stuck in the suspension!
Thanks again, I think next year for me is the intake manifold. I’ve done much of the rest you have notified me on. The bumper is done and headlights polished, they may need replacement in two years. Thanks too you and your followers! 👍
6:18 i am not doing change filter. I cleaning cloth into it. Problem with turbine is oil supply strainer its blocked like other cars with strainer. meybe strainer blocked easier when oil is 5W40

ive a m57 530d, no oil consumption, or black smoke, but she is gutless. MAF change improved a smoking problem. engine seems ok, but a little bit slappy when cold. any ideas? 205k miles. decent oil change intervals with mobl1 mainly
Is there any common oil leaks on these? i have an oil leak coming from somewhere on the right side of the engine. Have not had a chance to have a proper look but its pretty bad and its recent as i was in there not so long ago to service it as well as do the glowplugs and swirl flap removal. M47 engine.
Hello, can someone help ,i have the exact engine and i have problem with acceleration, car service told me that the turbo needs to be replaced , someone here with the same issue
I've 2 of these engines E46 320d and E91318d and neither of them have that mad looking round metal thing with all the fins on it just below the egr thermostat? Never seen anything like it?
Hi Dunno if you still check comments but ill try. This same engine struggled to get to temp and when on highway it even cooled back down. In city it warmed normally. Obv it was the thermostat, so I changed it and indeed it was stuck open, but even with the new one in place I still have the same issue. Any clue on what can it be? Thanks!
Hey, its normal the 520d or 320d are known for bad heating up, thats why most of them have the automatic webasto equiped where it starts up when its less then -5°c outside (cant be controlled via the radio or remote unless picked as option) bmw Just used the bigger radiators from the bigger engines and went kind off overkill without knowing (i guess). Try keeping fan speed at like 2 or 3 stripes instead of the 'auto' mode when its colder outside, it heats the coolant up faster.. Sidenote, when you're not in the auto mode and you have webasto, it will not kick on even when its -5°c outside..
Hi George, I bought 640d from 2016 (3.0d with 309 bhp) and the car is sound but I noticed the day after that the car is shaking / vibrating too much at idle. I saw from invoices that it only had break disks and EGR replaced. Feels like misfire or jamming EGR... But you have much more experience then me so I wanted ask. What would be (in your opinion) causing such shaking and vibrations on idle gear ?
Hi! Can you tell me if I change the gasket on the camshaft cover, where the silicone should be placed or if it should be placed? Thank you very much! e87 118d m47 90kw
Also ive got a 2007 320D E90 M47 engine, seems to be no boost til about 2500-3000rpm then it kicks in, checked the air intake pipe all looks good Tried to remove egr for cleaning but the bottom bolts are seized, anything else to check over?
Someone have for sale e92 2008 320d se coupe 150k on the clock nice bodywork but is oil leak but is start drive good 2000f waht you think about m47 people??
I have the same engine m47tu, it seems to lose pulling power, it doesn’t rev normal, there is no power at all, at times revs upto 2000rpm, what might be the problem
Great Vlog again. Had a new turbo fitted at 42000 miles on my Series I 20d due to main dealership not charging the filter you mentioned although was ticked off on service reports Sheets. I really love driving BMW’s just trying to find what suits us now. Do under 5 k miles a year. Want an auto any advice? You seem to know beaters inside out. 😁👍
I have exactly the same problem to my E83 M47TU.Additionaly too often DPF regenerations.Tomorrow I will check EGR and EGR Cooler. Is it a common problem for the EGR Cooler to be clogged or just only the EGR malfunction?
Was there any warning lights after that? I know that you can just plug it, but so that I know, you have to program the ecu for that. Gonna do that to my bmw but not right now because it's like - 20 degrees cold so the engine would get warm much slower if I delete it
On the e46 there is a egr that’s works with vacuum, you just take it off at the egr and close it of or bend it close. You leave the plug on the switch as is. The switch still opens and closes. But the egr stays closed. Egr needs vacuum to open. Easy guys
What about the cooling system? One of the BMW forums I have looked at is adamant that the whole cooling system should be replaced at about 75k - 100k miles. Is this something that you'd recommend, or does it only apply to 6-cylinder models in the US?
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks for the swift reply. That has calmed me down a bit. It's strange, because the forum never said that. There were too many doom and gloom stories of cooling system failures. I have a 2003 320d Touring that I bought from my sister 11 years ago. It had 93k on the clock, now on 128k. Things have gone wrong (no car is 100% fault-free) but have been replaced. The car has never let me down, and I hope to keep it for a few more years yet (until diesel cars are banned from our streets).
Hi George, I'm getting a lot from your videos. Your my go to guy. So I want to buy a bmw 1 series M sport specifically, I don't think I can find a 3.0l like yours, but like the idea of the 120d or even 123d, which engines do you recommend & which ones should I avoid? I'm seeing alot of mixed reviews all over the place contradicting each other, can you help me out? Happy to donate for your advice 👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters Ok thanks 👍🏻, how can I donate? Would you mind short listing things to look out for both engines? I've been researching & know full service history is important, services every 10k rather than 20k
These M47s don't usually last long over 200k it would be good to make a compression test video and see how how healthy the engine is and also a dyno test would produce awesome content.
Great video 👍 My car has done 145000 miles, when I first start it the engine runs rough until I give it a bit of gas. I am planning on changing the glow plugs over Christmas as well as doing my rocker cover gasket. What else would you recommend I do? Any tips would be appreciated.
You cant give me thumbs down i tell youtube to remove them cos youtbe like me and like dat i bwing da content. And common common pwoblems. Try it and see
Hi George, Wondering could you give me any advice. I have an E90 with an N47 engine. It stopped two weeks ago. I have no fuel coming to fuel fail. Have replaced low pressure pump, high pressure pump and pressure sensor on rail. The car will start on easy start so I know it is a fuel problem. Have you any suggestions. Thanks Graham P.S. really enjoy your videos.
Done 25k in my m47 this last year. It’s not on 125k miles. No issues. I think you’re wrong about them being bad engines. Nice power, very economical, and very smooth. I think as long as you look after them and do your oil changes they are very good engines. I know a number of people who’ve taken this engine past 300k miles
Hey George, thanks for the tips. One question though: I've just changed the crankcase breather on my 2004 320d and could feel the power of coming back. I took her for a longer drive and just before I got home the faulty exhaust gas lamp came on. Was it a chain reaction? Could it be the egr? Whats do you think??
