BMWs always seem to leak like a sieve sooner or later. My E90 N43 had leaking oil cooler and oil filter housing gaskets at 120k miles. Replaced these myself with parts from BMW dealer as it's very accessible towards front of engine bay, before last year's oil change. However, not looking forward to the leaky rocker cover fix, which has got worse despite gasket being replaced by a local garage a couple of years ago.

Sorry this has happened mate... On a positive side, Its great content... I really need to see this to help myself with my current oil leak.. It looks the same pretty much so yeah.. Looking forward to the up and coming videos.. I would love to see a video on how to clean all the oil from everywhere afterwards.. I know thats basic.. But i dont even know where to start with mine, especially on the driveway haha

I've just had the Gaskets and O rings replaced on the oil filter housing on my 320d 2008. BMW wanted nearly £700. A local garage changed them and replaced the drive belt for £280.

its not a BMW if there is no oil leak somewhere. Old or new there is always at somepoint a oil leak

I have a similar issue at the moment with my M57 330D, been chasing a leak that is leaving a 2 inch puddle overnight. Had the engine bay cleaned and narrowed it down to the bottom of the engine, either oil cooler, oil housing gasket or maybe rear main seal. Also have oil in my coolant expansion tank (milky) but not on the dipstick or oil filler cap. Again, looked for videos in this area not not really that great.

I had the same issue on a N57 330d. Not too hard to change, but a PITA to bleed the coolant after. The gasket was metal with rubber inserts and the rubber inserts had perished due to heat cycles. I didn't take the inlet manifold off.

Wheel speed sensors and reluctor rings as well as front struts is on my e90 (316d) to do list. Also the rocker cover gasket

Vac pump is another spot that quite often leaks and the o ring kit is fairly cheap. Ps I’m just about to do this job myself so a quick vid on that would be fantastic…

If you do George, I'd like to know how critical it is that M47 & N47 Engines run above 88 deg Celsius as my M47 is operating around 83 degs after changing both Main & EGR Stats (from BMW)

Hi George I was one of them people last year asking for a oil filter houseing video 😅 so in the end I found one on line just a guy putting on the new gaskets so that helped me, so I went on and did it myself I first had it done previously by a garage but after a few weeks I noticed it was still leaking so had a go myself, but whilst stripping down I noticed that the dipstick tube had not been replaced properly the o ring that fits on the bottom of the dipstick tube had not been pushed in to the Grove about a 1/4 of an inch inside the hole in the top of the sump were the tube fits in I have to say I can see why irs quite difficult to get it to seat in you need to push very hard and a lot of wiggling and oil to lubricant the o ring, I used a little washing up liquid in the end. But make sure it's in properly as you will have an oil leak again You know when it's in as the screw thay holds the dipstick tube to the housing lines up strait and square and not at an angle like mine was

Hi George, I take it that's the same engine as the 2.0 mini countryman then. I'm sure my wife's 2012 mini is a n47? I'm not looking forward to doing the glow plugs lol. I've been giving them a soak every other week in pb blaster then I'll have a go to see if they come out 🤞

Happend to me too,started out of no where and cause my oil pressure light to come on and there’s metal in the oil filter,I’m going to change it all tomorrow and see if the engine is still okay

Metal in the filter is mostly rod bearings starting to fail and pierced a seal usually.

If thats the M47 mate i would say its toast, had the same with my E60 msport m47 last summer,found metal in the filter during and oil change, still went ahead changes filter and oil, engine was sounding like a bowlful of dinnerplates 2 weeks later, mind you it had 240,000 miles on it. Found a replacement engine in edinburgh for under £500 with only 120,000, runs like new.

My E82 N47 is leaking a bit of oil from the sump where the bolt is (bolt is done up tight). I suspect it may be a fine crack when the last owner overtightened the sump plug. Leak isn't bad enough for me to change the whole sump.

is there any bmw after e60 pre lci that could be considered reliable? I mean all of then have issues but come on all day long oil leaks, coolant leaks, cluck flywheel zillion of errors and warning lightts on the dashboard and so on... Witch one is the most reliable nowadays? So glad I kept my e39 🙂

Don't be cheap like me and only replace the gasket on the block. The leaks come from the o rings in the cooker. If you go to BMW prepare to cry at how much few o rings cost. Would be great to see a clutch change on jackstands

Hi George! Since the timing chain replacement is dubious, might as well just take the engine/gearbox out under the car, do the timing chain, pilot seal/clutch, oil filter gasket(s), PCV, intake manifold et al in "one shot". Prob need replacing of engine supports as well. Likely suspension parts while you're at it? If you have no hoist, can you partner with a shop? Then it becomes a logistics issue - are all parts sourceable, are you able to pay for the whole bundle? Can you get quantity discounts? Set the date... No doubt you want to get this done. Suggest you go forward with improvements (OEM or better) rather than "on the cheap"... I'll be following you! Keep your head up! It's not the "Big Seven" monster... Cheers, Chris from Connecticut

Unfortunately you'll have to make a tough choice: do the repairs and (hopefully) have a reliable daily driver (other shortcomings will eventually manifest themselves - glow plugs, injectors etc.) or have a fan take it off your hands. Being an estate (US we call them wagons) I'm sure there's a following and by selling to a fan he/she know exactly what they are letting themselves into. I wish the potential "offer" was already in the US even tho RHD might be quirky (US "Federalization" being a Diesel is likely impossible), it would be considered "mid-age" here with 180kKm - IIRC - (just under 120k miles) and there's at least ten years of life in this Diesel (once the timing chain is addressed). Have a F30 328d myself with 176k miles ("excessively" maintained - more worried she'll die in an accident, if anything!) and wouldn't part with it for the world! Sedan not Estate unfortunately. At least it's a RWD - less capital expense (not a factor when bought used), less weight, less system complexity, better fuel mileage - I routinely achieve around 50mpg (USGal), best 53mpg "slow" highway driving in daily commuting in EcoPro... Don't want "x-Drive" for the two days of snow here by the coast. If anything what I've had done at the dealer's was a blatant overcharge - the car is in their computer as an ix and I'm just waiting for a scenario... Meanwhile the last oil service and microfilter change USD 65 incl tax in December 2023! On an oil Service Plan (2 yrs unlimited changes flat USD211+tax) and they had a Microfilter "Special"... But the American consumer is generally uneducated as to the benefits of a diesel and emissions regulations make new models impossible this side of the world. You already need a Ph.D. to understand the 2014 system on mine alone... What's up with the Seven visibly parked as a daily driver? Cheers, Chris from Connecticut

Not a great car George, it has to be said, but seems to have fired up your subscribers, so all is not bad! Diesels are not really for me nowadays, I do very few miles, but I am still interested in all you do and how you do it. Bet you wish you had the garage finished? I know the feeling, I have a nice garage with a ramp in but can't use it owing to the long term 8 series project, so have to do any work on my daily drive outside, no fun in the north of England in the winter!

Looking forward to the oil filter housing video. I must say I am not at all a fan of removing emissions equipment as I feel the removal of and malfunctioning of this stuff has led to the rediculous suffering from ULEZ. However I do fully understand the reasons why one would want to remove it. As soon as the Euro 6 cars come of warranty people are going to have to remove even more junk from their engines and they will emit NOx at 80s car rates.

if the coolant is pink and turns orange when poured on the ground leave it. oats coolant is better for bmw than hoats coolant because theres no silicate in it.
