The only person I saw not using a wire to replace the gear back into place, just used his fingers to do so! Great Tutorial, not so great for the dealers to lose their customers. LOL

well done... I have a 2020 pure and I also do not see the spline lube mentioned at all, but it makes sense to keep that well lubricated.. Nice video ...... good balance of information while keeping the video short and concise.

I like the way you reversed the footpegs when there is no center stand, very clever. I used Moly-60 for the splines, purchased online from Sierra BMW in Reno, Nevada. From my research, 60% moly (molybdenum disulfide) is highly recommended. Use it only on the splines and not around the boot or u-joints.

Thanks for making this available. Looked-up the price of that grease on Amazon and it's about $60 delivered to New Zealand (everything is obscenely expensive here). Will need to research a local equivalent.

Yes, everything BMW recommends or sale is expensive but we love it anyway :) You can try MOTUL Tech Grease 300 (www.amazon.com/Motul-100898-Tech-Grease-300/dp/B0058CNHIW/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) or LIQUI-MOLY LONG-LIFE GREASE + MOS2 (products.liqui-moly.us/long-life-grease-mos2-1.html) I used this on my previous drive shaft bike Yamaha Super Tenere with no issues.

Note to the wise. My shaft spline failed on my 2018 r1200r. Exactly this job in the failing. 7000 miles into ownership from new. The spline completely rounded out and lost drive. Furthermore, only one week after 7000m service with BMW. BMW fixed the lot at over £1000 free on extended warranty. New bevel box, new shaft. ...
@gamotur
@gamotur 3 года назад
Thank you. I will definitely check if the drive shaft spline is in good condition before the end of the warranty. It's a new product for me, but most people swear it's the best lubricant for drive splines.
@enzo0930
@enzo0930 3 года назад
It might be a little bit too late. I think you might use the wrong lube for the spline. That thing was for the rubber boot only.
@gamotur
@gamotur 3 года назад
I know, I know I should use MOLY grease but after reading dozens of forums where people recommend this product, I also asked some professional mechanics, they said they use Staburags for transmission input shaft. I figured I would take a chance and use it on the drive shaft spline. I plan to check after the season what it looks like so consider the subscription :). By the way, when I opened my drive shaft boot on the splines there was a white paste that looked like Staburags from the factory. Thanks for watching.

Anyone have problems getting the boot to seal on the bike end? I did the job, and my boot seemed to snap in, but now does not stay in. Taking it apart now to troubleshoot. Great video. Thank you.
@WinstonFord
@WinstonFord Год назад
The circular plastic piece that holds the larger end of the larger rubber boot towards the engine was upside down. There are wide tabs that insert into the rubber boot, and narrow tabs that clip into the metal of the swing arm. The narrow tabs look almost to be in the 4 directions.. but on closer look they are at 12, 2, 6, and 8 oclock. The 8 o'clock tab must be towards the inside of the bike. Mine was towards the outside, and while it pushed in appeared to seat in the metal, it would slide back out. Now its snapped in properly. Thanks again for great vid.

Hi there. Firstly, great video. I’m looking at buying an “r nine t” so I’m doing as much research as possible regarding servicing etc. Two questions, 1. What mile/km interval for the final drive? 2. Why did you not grease the spline on the other end of the shaft? Thanks.
@gamotur
@gamotur 3 года назад
Thanks. Answer for first question: Every 12000 miles(20000 km) or two years book calls for final drive oil change ,nothing about spline lube. I'm lubricating the splines every 2 years. Question 2: The other end of the driveshaft is hard to get to but is not that critical because it's not moving that much, all the movement is in the rear. I'll do that side next time. Additional note: after 6 months four of my spokes come loose in the rear wheel and two in the front ,after two years I had a failure of the shaft seal behind the clutch slave cylinder ( part number 23.12.7.705.085 SHAFT SEAL) All fixed under the warranty. After almost three years I still love this bike. Don't forget to hit that Like Button 👍

Good video,only a question,the torx screw on the external part is the oil level. Thanks a lot
@gamotur
@gamotur Год назад
No! The filler plug is located on the left-hand side of final drive housing 3:47 . Correct oil amount is 180ml. The torx screw you see on the outside-back is for OEM BMW mudguard bracket.

I am actually about to do this. What grease are you using that's on the brush? and what are you using on the rubber boot? Also is the bike only held up with the two jack stands under the pegs? if so that's brilliant, never thought about that
@gamotur
@gamotur 3 года назад
Hi. Grease I used on spline and rubber boot is STABURAGS NBU 30 PTM. You can ask in BMW dealer or order it online from Germany. Bike is held only by the stands and front wheel of course. I had to invent something in order to lift rear wheel off the ground. Too bad that center stand is not available. Good luck.

Rather than using the expensive Moly grease on the rubber boots I use red rubber grease and save the Moly for the splines.

my RnineT scrambler 2020 shaft drive oil must be fill up not from this hole that you indicate but from another point that has a rubber cap just above the shaft drive. did you have an older model? why dont you use this opening?

My BMW is from 2018. Not sure if BMW changed anything in 2020, you surprised me with this. You're probably talking about the breather cap. Doesn't your RnineT have a fill plug on the side like mine?

There is nothing in the service book on this topic. I try to do this every two years, no matter how many miles.
@surferdude642
@surferdude642 2 года назад
Kowalski, I would take Gamatur's advice. In general, it depends a lot on the environment. Rain, mud, dirt or mostly dry on road conditions. I have a 2015 R1200R lc with 32,000 miles and just did front and rear splines for the first time. Most of my riding was in good weather and 100% on road, best case conditions. I found the shaft a little sticky to release, but it looked good at both ends, no rust. The u-joints moved smoothly and looked like new. I think that I will repeat in 2 years from now on.
