My thoughts on the BMW Siebenrock power kit 860cc for BMW R45. This kit increases the power and is made for most BMW Airhead models from the R45 and R65 to the larger R80 and R100 motorcycles.

Ah. Guess your right but not a vast lot of detail to go over as the units just unbolt and replace. The NJB Shocks really seem to hit the spot but important to get the right spring for your weight. Thanks for watching 😀

On Power, I had an R65 for about 3 years. I ran with others who mostly had R100's but didn't lag behind much as it got up to 110 mph (indicated) very quickly the few times there was a straight road and no police. After that it was a series of R100RS's which I took to top speed a few times but mostly only used the power to pass. I noticed it stumbled right around 100 mph. On having to do a top end I asked to put in dual plugs and a few other mods but nothing which would hurt the engine's reliability. With that I could get it up to 125 very smoothly from it's stumbling to 120 beforehand. Now I have an F800 which is a wonderful performer but seldom bring it above 80 and have never taken it to full speed. None the less it's always satisfying to know your machine is running at it's peak.

I bet the bike goes absolutely fantastic and I agree that the short wheelbase bikes are a pleasure to ride. I regretted selling my R65 to a friend so bought a 78 R45 which I converted using pistons and barrels from a R65. Just returned from a 800 mile tour of Devon and Cornwall, fully loaded and it never missed a beat. I also have a R80/7 so didn’t really need to upgrade to an 860cc, oh and I’m a bit too tight to shell out the cash needed. 👍

First of all I must say what a fantastic Austin 7 you have. Wow! A neighbour of mine has a 1929 Flat nose Morris and a 1929 Swift and I spent ages helping him restore it. I also was going the R65 Barrel and Piston route but I couldn't find them at a reasonable price. I have just completed the 500mile service and after resetting the valves it's running sweet as a nut. I love it to bits :) Suspension service next and then I may just swap the diff or get a higher ratio 5th as there is a, "Lands End to John o Groats in 24hours", run I want to do. Hi. I didn't get the camshaft. As the bike runs so much better and even smoother I don't think it is high in my upgrade list. I wanted enough power to safely overtake and keep us with my friends. What I have got is a whole lot more. My next upgrades with be sorting out the suspension and possibly a r100 diff as there is now so much more power I'd like to reduce the revs at 70mph by at least 500rpm. Safe riding 😀 David

Entertaining video, many thanks! As a returning biker I considered getting an R Ninety T but really don’t need the full capability it offers. Your R45 looks great and I was wondering if it may be too small for someone 6’ 1” ish?
@theoldgraywindpassertest
@theoldgraywindpassertest Год назад
Hi Endo, I tried the R9T too and it's a great bike but I felt that the R45 had something different that a modern bike can't offer which was why I spent the extra to make it into a 860cc and that made it very usable. I am only 5'6 but the man who I bought my R45 off was in fact my ex-boss for 7 years and he used it regally for years. He is 6'2. The R45 and R65 do have a shorter swing arm and seat than the R80 and R100 but exactly the same frame and most of the engine. IMHO I think the R45 is too underpowered to be anything but a short hopper. Lovely but frustrating at the same time. I'd look for a R65 or R80 unless you feel happy about fitting an upgrade kit... and better brakes :)

I bought one ready converted and really like riding it - it feels like you're going faster than you actually are! One change I made is to fit an r65 final drive and speedo because like you I found it too revvy on the open road - it's 12% higher and fourth gear is now equivalent to my old fifth. Can I ask you if you find that if you open the throttle in say 4th gear at around 2800rpm it vibrates till 3000rpm and then pulls hard? I don't know if I am bogging it down and this is normal or if it is a tuning issue
@theoldgraywindpassertest
@theoldgraywindpassertest Год назад
Hi Paul. That's exactly what I was thinking of doing and glad to hear it worked. May I ask what final drive ratio you fitted? I too have a vibration at somewhere in the range, I think it's about 4k then goes but I'll get back to you on that. I thought it may be mechanical which it may very well be if we have the same symptoms but if mine is different I think it could just be carb balance. Glad you like it. Fitting the kit was a last ditch before I bought an R9T but now I'm keeping it :)
@paulalig761
@paulalig761 Год назад
@@theoldgraywindpassertest So I have a 31/9 final drive fitted to answer your question . As to the vibration- I think it isn't mechanical because it only happens when you open the throttle so will work towards getting everything set up right - as I'm new to airheads it is a steep learning curve for me. I fitted a siebenrock front brake upgrade when I got the bike in spring because I really didn't like the original ate setup btw

@@paulalig761 Thanks for that Paul. I'll be looking out for one now :D If your near to Lincoln, Rainbow Workshop is your man for setup. My R45 came with 2 disks but only one calliper so I fitted a second calliper and Goodridge hoses. You may be interested in a story that illustrates the interchangeability of BMW parts. Many years ago prior to the whole GS craze that started with the R80GS a guy called a Lindsay Urqhart who was the Australian BMW manager built a bike and sidecar racing ace built a trail bike GS largely styled after the BMW ISDT bikes. It looked fabulous but the interesting point was, he used an R100 engine but with an R65 crank and shortened cylinder barrels. This gave about 800cc with a bore and stroke combination not seen on any BMW at the time. I read a review of the machine which was mainly positive. The bike had Maico twin shock suspension and really did look great. Sadly it’s current whereabouts are unknown. Many manufacturers don’t reinvent the wheel with every model. Design engineers use many design solutions across many models and years. Take a look at 70s to 90s gear selector ratchets which were largely the same across both road, trail and mx bikes. Harley Davidson does the same which allowed me to use front brake and suspension parts from bikes as late as 2010 on my 1978 machines, turning old bikes into well braked and safer pieces of equipment. Never sell a BMW is my advice as every time I get back on after a long lay off I am reminded of BMWs slogan from the 70s that read, ‘Sheer riding pleasure’. I have three and love them all.
@theoldgraywindpassertest
@theoldgraywindpassertest Год назад
That's a really interesting story. I'm thinking they must have modified the barrels a little as there wouldn't be enough compression otherwise. The setup must be very similar to what I have now with a 60 kit. I'll be looking that story up. Thank you 😊
@stephensaunders4668
@stephensaunders4668 Год назад
I have a photo of the bike in a scrapbook somewhere in storage but Peter Thoeming aka ‘the Bear’, at times editor and contributor of various Australian motorcycle magazines was aware of the machine and as he told me, once passed on purchase of that machine at an auction. Yes I am sure that the barrel height must have been shortened. At the time I wondered what this must have done to the relation of the pushrod tube alignment. Probably would have to taken height from the head end.

This is the bit I looked at taken from the DVLA website The following are considered acceptable (not substantial) changes if they fall into these specific categories: • changes that are made to preserve a vehicle, which in all cases must be when original type parts are no longer reasonably available; • changes of a type, that can be demonstrated to have been made when vehicles of the type were in production or in general use (within ten years of the end of production); • in respect of axles and running gear changes made to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance; • in respect of vehicles that have been commercial vehicles, changes which can be demonstrated were being made when they were used commercially. Hi. I now you may think that old Blighty is a bit grim and alright bits do fall off and get washed away in the winter but the summer this year we regally saw 35c and even on occasion 40! I was still out on though having fun..... and alright, roasting my nuts off :D

Morning many thanks for the information you sent me. Just wonder your thoughts 1. Because my r 45 was a insurance right off not structural it was stolen. It will need a mot to prove it’s road worthy I presume the new mot will still show the bike as a r45 because the engine and frame number are still the same. 2. When I come to insure the bike I tell them it’s a r45 with a engine upgrade. Just going for another coffee and maybe a 🧁 😋 and read all the information you sent me. Thanks again for your help on this matter looking forward to receiving my upgrade kit. Enjoy your channel very much. 🏍👍

Have fun with the R45. I didn't need to change much at all with the upgrade. Not even with the carbs which surprised me. 😁

Nice...but the cost eclipses the value of the bike. 🤔

It was well worth the cost. It makes the bike ridable and more like a modern bike. I guess it really depend on how much your prepared to put into it of course as really, it's lost money.

That's why I got the 860cc upgrade kit. Almost unridable without. 😀

As an engineer, I regard your misleading video title as ‘clickbait’. Nothing about the upgrade, just you rambling about motorbiking.

Thanks Lesley. I thought I had clearly mentioned the 860cc upgrade kit I have fitted. I'm just a bloke having fun with some spanners, oil and a bit of wind. 😉 If only I was female and hot, I'd be keenly making money out of this but instead all I get is a little fun. I hope you have fun too. David x

I used to really like my old R45 for short hops. I also ran a Laverda Mirage 1200 at the same time, and that provided the thrills , when I needed them. Nothing wrong with the R45.
