I have a 2004 1150R. Had the same problem with the rear caliper bolt. $80 to have it removed & replaced with stainless steel bolts. Got it 12 months ago. New battery, rear & front pads, tyres, filters, ignition coils & replace plastic fantastic quick connects. But it runs ( So far). Good luck with the project. I highly recommend 4 finger shot of whiskey while looking at your bank /- balance.
@theoldgraywindpassertest upto know a new starter motor, all new bearings in swingarm and nushings for where the drive attaches to swingarm. And know it either needs a new tps unit or the ignition unit from front off the engine.
I thought mine was bad, luckily the abs has been removed on mine but you wait till you look at the electrics and anything else. They are a money and time pit!
@theoldgraywindpassertest Hope you aint planning on it happening soon, been trying to get mine sorted for a year. Can recommend Motorworks though for parts. Always get better than I take off.
@stevebonner9108 thankfully I have over a year to get it right and a Multistrada to enjoy 😉 Your spot on about Motorworks, just bought a fuel pump from ebay and the hoses don't align.... What needs doing to yours?
@@theoldgraywindpassertest At the minute I feel everything. Was supposed to be a good bike but only done 100 miles in the year before I brought it. Gave it a full service, developed fuel leaks, lack of power - it's always been like it. Play in the rear end, all bearings replaced. New pattern injectors, second hand lamba sensor. Buggered wiring all totally corroded. Had to drill exhaust studs out and the list goes on. Thank god I've got my MT07 to use as bikes are my only mode of transport.
On Power, I had an R65 for about 3 years. I ran with others who mostly had R100's but didn't lag behind much as it got up to 110 mph (indicated) very quickly the few times there was a straight road and no police. After that it was a series of R100RS's which I took to top speed a few times but mostly only used the power to pass. I noticed it stumbled right around 100 mph. On having to do a top end I asked to put in dual plugs and a few other mods but nothing which would hurt the engine's reliability. With that I could get it up to 125 very smoothly from it's stumbling to 120 beforehand. Now I have an F800 which is a wonderful performer but seldom bring it above 80 and have never taken it to full speed. None the less it's always satisfying to know your machine is running at it's peak.
Great stuff :) They don't seem to go for as much as an R100 yet there are very few R45s about. The 800cc upgrade kit is well worth the money and makes it usable day to day. Have fun fella :)
Hi there! Yes, I chopped her in when I upgraded mu Multistrada to a 1260s. I do miss the Airhead but I don't regret my decision. I've just picked up another BMW though whick I'll be fixing up ready for the 2025 Longest Day challenge 🙃 😅
I did. It's been about 3 months now since I did the dirty. I do miss the airhead but I don't regret it. There was so much more to do and really it needed a nut and bolt rebuild to get it how I wanted it. Have my heart set on an Airhead GS thou :o
Excellent video but please consider to work on the sound. I had to stop watching as the music was way to loud compared to some of your comments. Nice bike and many really interesting camera moves including a drone. Really good job but please try to normalize the sound mix (music / voice) better.
Great video! Nice one. Having ridden loads if Airheads over the years I'm hopefully about to actually buy my first. A wreck of a r75/5. If the deal comes off I'll have the restoration on my channel then it'll be used for a few trips away!
Morning many thanks for the information you sent me. Just wonder your thoughts 1. Because my r 45 was a insurance right off not structural it was stolen. It will need a mot to prove it’s road worthy I presume the new mot will still show the bike as a r45 because the engine and frame number are still the same. 2. When I come to insure the bike I tell them it’s a r45 with a engine upgrade. Just going for another coffee and maybe a 🧁 😋 and read all the information you sent me. Thanks again for your help on this matter looking forward to receiving my upgrade kit. Enjoy your channel very much. 🏍👍
Morning just wondering how you got on changing your V5 details from a r45 to a r 83 can you please let me know. I’ve just ordered my up grade kit thanks love your channel. 🏍👍+ How long before you receive your updated V5 thanks again 🍰🥟🍔 yum😋
For a classic motorcycle some engine modifications are permitted so I did not change anything. Look it up on the DVLA website. (Queue inbound hate mail 😁
This is the bit I looked at taken from the DVLA website The following are considered acceptable (not substantial) changes if they fall into these specific categories: • changes that are made to preserve a vehicle, which in all cases must be when original type parts are no longer reasonably available; • changes of a type, that can be demonstrated to have been made when vehicles of the type were in production or in general use (within ten years of the end of production); • in respect of axles and running gear changes made to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance; • in respect of vehicles that have been commercial vehicles, changes which can be demonstrated were being made when they were used commercially. Here is the link so you can decide for yourself: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a81f7e6ed915d74e6235144/vehicles-of-historical-interest-substantial-change-guidance.pdf
Love the channel. I’ve just purchased a insurance right off not structural. All the work completed. I just received a new V5 just I’m going for the engine upgrade do you just get the engine capacity change on the V5 thanks again for the great video. 🏍👍
@richardlaker9722 I think the only thing I regret with my build was not going the full nut and bolt restore. It bit me a few times when oil started squirting out in odd places. But then again if it isn't leaking something it probably isn't working 😂 Have fun with the build. The 860cc kit is well worth it.
I think older, "classic" bikes are like many classic cars, in that unless they've been fully rebuilt (upgrading all the known Achilles heels along the way!), then they'll require constant fettling as things wear out. I'd say if it's your only motorcycle and you want to ride more, then either replace it, or if you can, have it as a second bike! Your R45 (R86?!) is very nice, but I hope you enjoy whichever bike you end up with. BTW, after watching your vid from a couple of years ago, I wondered whether your bushy moustache was real. At around 3:50 in this one, I could see the wind must've peeled it off and made it get stuck to your cheek!🙂
Hi @Fudders thanks for those fantastic comments. I think you're absolutely right about the Airhead. I really should have calmed my excitement down and done a full nut and bolt restore. It really bit me back so many times that in the end it would have been far quicker. As a second bike to my old Multistrada 1200 it was always going to be a bit of fun but then the opportunity came around to do The Longest Day Challenge and things got a bit more serious. After doing 2000 miles in 4 days I'd lost the appetite to rebuild again and thus.... I now have a Ducati Multistrada 1260s :) I can only grow moustaches now as when I let my chin hair grow, I look like Santa ;) Ho ho ho .....
Many times I regretted selling my old R100. Bought an 1150GS in 2000 and still got her. She's taken me all round Europe and SE Asia. She's always got me home and in darker times been like my best mate. Many other more expensive and more modern bikes have come and gone. Anybody that tells you motorbikes don't have souls is wrong IMO. Keep it!!
Sounds like you have had a lot of fun with that 1150 😀 Well, I may regret it but I finally decided it had to go. I updated my Multistrada and I love it. Time will tell
Personally I've never been a fan of BMW motorcycles period, their modern examples have too many components that fail and are mega expensive to replace, same with their cars. At least the older models were built to last and less complicated. I still rate Japanese designed and built motorcycles over them, I have a 40 year old Yamaha, ride it every week, all year round, love it, never plan on selling it because it makes me feel like I'm 17 again, this model were the bike to have back in the 80's, I did sell my first one but regretted it so much I bought another a month later. I'm now on my third.
@@theoldgraywindpassertest Aye, freedom and personal choice, without those 2 things, what would life be like hey. I hope that enough people wake up and help in the fight against this Great Reset plan that's being pushed otherwise we'll all find out by 2030.
You may be right but there comes a time when I'd rather ride than fish the spanners out.I've done so much to this bike but I think it still needs a pressure plate. The leaking R100 diff I have needs sorting and fitting and really I should fish the heads off and have the hardened valve seats fitted and new valves before it drops one into a piston. Oh, the gearbox may need an overhaul too.
Thanks for that. It's a lovely bike but getting fed up of doing so much to keep it running and really I know there's so much more to do 😀 That screen I think is a Puig Mini Tour .
