07 m5 142k miles fbo runs strong. Bought with 49k miles in 2012. Been my daily driver since. I got it from carmax with ext warranty to 125k miles. Warranty was $2k. 😆 it paid for smg pump actuators etc etc. Thousands and thousands of dollars in warranty work. I still love this car. Very comfortable and fun to drive and still competes very well with new fast cars. Roll races on the highway it takes down many. Very strong top end. Long tube headers intake tune from evolve. RPI exhaust n pulley etc. It’s an smg. I replaced the Clutch once a long time ago. Changed the rod bearings a while ago as we’ll. This v10 whoops ass and sounds awesome and is a blast to drive. I have a vid of it dyno’ing 510 to the wheels before the intake. Cheers

It is a poor design but always comes down to poor maintenance and people's lack of understanding how bad it is for an engine to rev it cold

Poor design? Not in the slightest. You can’t have a highly capable magnificent engine with the reliability of a Honda. Changing the bearings every 100,000 miles is not a poor design.

Another excellent video! Great info. I always wait until mine warms up before going over 2000 rpm. But I’m now paranoid that if I have to take it to a garage some mechanic will thrash it when cold.

ALL garages are told to thrash it mate we was when I used to work there to try and destroy the bearings quicker to make you come back All garages knows that and do that it’s a fact !!! My advise don’t buy a M car to boring I would rather AMG which I can use all that torque more then a engine where you have to rev it to get power the top end speed is good but realistically where can you use that speed Which makes it a unusable daily car

Hello BMW Doctor, Left out fuel injectors leaking or struck open leading to hydro-lock and bending rods. bent rods score Alusil bore and now requires replacement! Have TWO S85's with this condition and looking on market, ebay for example, have found more S85's with scored bores. Grrr, but still love them! Mr. P

At the end of the day as a M3 owner myself, and owner of 4 BMWs it comes down to maintenance, these cars are enthusiasts cars high performance vehicles, change your oil, replaced rod bearings with better ones, let your car warm up do the important things first before they fail, and lastly enjoy the hell out of them

Hello dean i am way off topic here but i figured you are the right person to ask. I am looking to install a 3 stage intake on my n53b30 325i. I was wondering if changing the power state to 2 in the CAS and then bringing it to a tuner would work or if I have to update something else. I know mosselman can do this but I'm aiming for 280-290 hp so that would require me to bring my car to mosselman (or buy the €180 adapter) and then bringing it to another tuner. Do you have any advice for me.

The recommended oil is probably too thick and heats up too slowly. Red Line 15W50 supposedly works a lot better.

Dean.. thanks for this video. I am a maintenance junkie with my E90 and F10 but was always afraid of the E60 M5 which is what I always really wanted. My BMWs have treated me extremely well with my tightened maintenance schedules but do you think an E60 M5 can be a daily driver for someone who stays on top of the maintenance?

No, unless you get one with a manual transmission. Also having these engines stroked to 5.0 to 5.8 and have them redo the whole engine could make it reliable. Gas will be expensive. Owned an 08 E63 M6 and the car is definitely worth the performance for your buck. S85 sounds amazing. I have a 2009 e93 m3 and I prefer it over owning an S85. S85 feels like a ticking time bomb driving too.

LoFiMafia that doesn’t make any sense since the s65 is a s85 without 2 cylinders, still suffers from the same issues.

These are wonderful engines Dean, but you have to look after them properly or else it will have issues. I like ///M cars myself, but maintenance is more expensive than an ///M Sport 330i or 550i for example.

I have an e93 m3, people say to use a lighter oil but they don’t account for the rest of the engine components they were designed for 10w60, I’m running the original factory bearings @ 96k miles and I just changed my oil, but always let it warm up and if you don’t have time to let it warm up, drive the car under 2500-3k RPM

I disagree about buying the actuator rebuild kit and doing it yourself, by the time the actuator fails it’s already done damage to the electronics so save your money and either buy new ones or rebuilt ones with replaced electronics with the lifetime warranty from rebuild. Unfortunately they don’t do idle actuators.

Well thats it, I'm think I'm going with the Lexus LC500 instead of this. I just want something I can drive that is a lot of fun and reliable. When paying so much there shouldn't be so many flaws.

@@sebastianbach2115 In North America: 2008, 2009, 2010. Rest of the world might be 2007. You'll know by headlights, taillights, interior design. Although some owner upgrade for the aesthetic. Another place to look is if the center console has programmable buttons such as for the radio.

great video mate, but deffo missed another massive silent engine killer. get those injectors changed every 50k. this engine suffers faulty injectors which can stick open, this can then cause bore wash, or hydrolock within said piston chamber, which can then bend a conrod and finally scores catastrophic damage in the cylinder to the mighty v10. i know, as ive gone through this heart ache. if id known about this week spot, i would of changed all injectors when id purchased the car. As im saying guys, get those old injectors changed....... cheers

These are race engines with street car parts when they were designed, bad mix. These are Detuned f1 engines. NA race engines have less tolerance for failure. Therefore bad combination adding standard rod bearings, therefore even worse with owners that do not regularly maintain their cars that do not understand its race pedigree in top level racing.

I have a donor ECU running my E60 M5, just want the original ECU working again so I dont have ABS, DSC errors.. the reason the original doesnt work is there was a tune being uploaded and it "bricked".. can you help or point in the direction. I will pay whoever can get the original working again. Thanks

I have the teamviewer application that allows you to control my computer from yours.. I can install the original ECU and original Cas module.. and get you to control my computer with teamviewer

Rebuilt Kits are so stupid it's not the gears that ultimately fail it's the circuit doing the replace kits wont help mate

I got mine 60kmiles and NOT ONE ISSUE. Please stop destroying the aftermarket of these cars. Vanospump, rods, throttle valve actuator are the ones to look out for. Rods every 30-40k and you fine. mine got 180kmiles now 3rd hand and NADA!

mate lol I repaired all mine and all parts were sent to me for the channel and I had good friends of mine do my rod bearings for free for me. my friend I'm very good friends with dealers and garages here in the UK so I'm known everywhere I'm not your average person who owns one of these you know. all my parts I either get given to me for the channel or I get them at trade price so this car is very very cheap for me. I ain't your average Joe owning this car and I feel sorry for the people that do own these just normally its unrealistic

Sounds like a motor to avoid at all costs way terribly design motor only thing good about it is the pistons and the block and the heads everything else seems to fail and is extremely expensive a very poorly designed motor really good for about 50000 ks

@@BMWDoctor m8 i saw ypur video No other motor in history has the inherent engineering defects this does. Its a shame as it could habe been good. However as you have proven its not a good or reliable motor. Just not worth the exceasive cost of parts to failure.

Her in Australia they go for 10k from the wreckers. Then id do bearings and go through all of the issues you have outlined. Thanks m8👍

These are terrible engines in terms of longevity - they are very sensitive to maintenance intervals have common failures that are catastrophic even if maintained properly. BMW claims that rod bearings are a maintenance item on these engines. Frequent Vanos failures and more. To even try and bring an argument that these engines are remotely reliable/dependable is being incredibly disingenuous. 1) Oil consumption issues 2) Vanos issues (that are catastrophic to the engine). 3) rod bearing failures and the list goes on and on but those are major ones.

@@BMWDoctor Don't get me wrong - I love BMW and you can clearly tell they got the design right on some things - but failed on material implementation i.e. timing chain guides. When they work they drive amazing. The old BMW's are where it's at in my opinion. I'd take an S38 powered M5 over the newer stuff anyday.
