Hello Chris from Remlap Al. As a minority here, no Harley, thanks for taking your time presenting the videos. My bike is a Montauk, 2004. Tell me if you would why the clutch spline would be designed as it is. The videos are much cheaper than a movie and entertaining.

Hallo from sunny South Africa Chris I came upon your blog when starting to look for technical stuff and "how to" after purchasing a BMW R1200R this year. Apart from laughing a lot at your antiques and comments you have taught me a lot. Thank you for your time you so selflessly put in to make videos for us rookies. It is much appreciated. I refer a lot of my friends to your blog as it simply is very informative and that extra "touch" you put in makes it the best as far as I'm concerned. All of the best and again, thank you

Hi Benny, I am glad my videos are helping you keep your bike on the road. Buying a BMW is supposed to be about riding not how much 'disposable income' the buyer has. The K12LT is not much different than the older K's except for the wiring, size and weight. While I do not work on K1200LT's much anymore if you have a question don't hesitate to ask. Thanks, Chris

Chis again I commend you for your time and and attention to BMW maintenance and education that you provide. I got a 2002 K 1200 LT early in 2012, I do my own work on all my vehicles and this BMW has left me scratching my head a few times. Your RU-vid post has help me with a few of these issues and saved me butt loads of money! I can't think you enough for helping this financial challenged person enjoying riding a K 1200lt..

While I don't own a BMW yet I watch your videos to learn and educate myself. I might add the entertainment value is priceless as well. I am leaning towards an old airhead at this point. This series of videos has been an eye opener . I guess it's like like my grandpa used to say "Sometimes you have to go through the asshole to get to the tonsils" thanks...

Hi Chris. I've seen quite a few DIY videos. Yours stand out from the rest. A minor issue: you might consider to reduce the f@&%*s. Thanks !

Hi Eric, Thanks for commenting. All 16 valve K bikes had SHOWA forks as far as I am aware of. I don't know of any BMW (pre-2005) that used Kayaba forks. Good luck with the spline lube and thank you for the grease suggestion, Chris

If you made more videos you would be making money from them... You have helped me with my 92 K75 as I attempt to remove the transmission. It's a bitch so far.. and very dirty but it has been laid up for a long time in my Motorcycle shack. out of the weather. I've also had my final drive and driveshaft splines rebuilt. They were so worn they were ready to depart one another. Now I'm after the clutch which I think might be down to minimums based on the rest of the maintenance on the bike. It's a rebuild in progress. Wheel bearings, etc. I will still probably discover more surprises. Thanks for the tip about the long dowel pins. I'll make em this afternoon....

I do not yet have a video covering the rebuilding of the water/oil pump as it is not economical to pay a shop to do that versus installing a new unit. I plan to have a very detailed K bike service video available late winter / early spring that will show how to rebuild these pumps. Thanks.

The engine noise in your video sounds normal to me. The throttle bodies are certainly out of synch a bit (the pounding noise at idle) and your ABS has a fault that can be easily cleared. Ride it hard and it will be a happy bike, Chris

Well, normally it takes 4 to 5 hours. Yesterday, however, took us 10 hours! Some days are good, some just go to shit! No additional costs besides a rear main seal and clutch disc if it is saturated with oil or a complete clutch pack if the clutch has been slipping for a long time.

Hi Scott, The K's are quite reliable. However, somewhat soul-less. Not as empty as the new BMW's are but not as endearing as an old Airhead. if you don't need the latest, greatest, mostest expensive Roundel-clad turd an old Airhead will make you proud and happy. As to your previous request (auto-biography) I am working on a rough draft right now :)

This is a great set of videos - thank you for posting them. I am about to tackle removing the transmission on my 1991 K100LT as I have oil leaking from the little hole at the bottom on the clutch housing. Don't know yet whether it's leaking from the engine output shaft seal, the gearbox input shaft seal or the seal where the clutch pushrod comes through the shaft but I have ordered all 3 as I figured it's good to replace the lot while things are apart. Will also inspect the clutch as well & replace whatever is needed while I am in there. I am in the UK & am lucky to have a BMW specialist less than 30 miles away so all parts are easy & quick to get. They are called James Sherlock - you may have heard of them as they ship all over the world. Good people to deal with in my experience. If there's anything else you think I might need to do while i'm at it i'd appreciate the advice. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the nice note and the parts contact Brapper. Good luck with your repair. Remember that most K rear main seal 'leaks' are in fact merely a failed o-ring.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I stripped everything down today, took me a few hours as I also have all the ABS crap in the way on my K100LT as well so that added to the job. It looks like what you said about the O-ring under the clutch nut is right as there is oil around the nut & also sadly all over the clutch as well so I have ordered a stack of parts to finish the job next weekend/ Gonna replace all seals while I am in there & also the friction plate. Swingarm gaiter was also split at the bottom so have ordered a new one of those too. Gearbox shaft splines are like new & have had moly grease on them so has obviously been well lubed in the past which was a relief to me I noticed on your video that the locknut on the left side swingarm bearing was locktited & hard to remove - luckily mine wasn't & came off the threads very easily. Just waiting for the parts from James Sherlock to arrive now.

Hi Chris, I found very interesting and educational these 6 videos, it seems easier done than said, jajaja. Do you have any video about how to change the water/oil pump seals? Because BMW made modifications on the pump (I think they changed the impeller and shafts) from January 1990 on, and I don't know if the new parts will fit on my 1989 K100RS. Thank you very much.

Hey Chris,I watched all 6 of this series and I truly admire any mechanic who hates thread locker and loves copper anti-seize.I'll be doing the same job on my '91 K100 RS (16V) in a few weeks and your excellent vids will probably save me 6 hours at least.Just my thing but I use marine/boat specific type grease on exposed parts like center stand pivots etc. It tends to resist water exposure better than normal grease.Is there a sure way to know if K100 forks are KYB or Showa at a glance? Thanks.

Hi Chris, Could you tell me how long this job should take and are there any other big costs besides the boots, bolts and pricey lubes?

Hi Chris. I hope you are well? Great vid by the way. Could you help me out though please. What is the torque in NM for the left adjustable locking nut for the swing arm please. I can find everything else in my manual except that and your memory card ran out. Thanks. Ian.
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 7 лет назад
The left adjustable pin is torqued to 8 nm and the nut 40 nm. Note these are much lower than the pins used on the Para-lever rear drive. Good luck Ian!

That's the way BMW has been doing it for decades and it has worked fairly well until they added a hydraulic clutch.

Great bunch of videos, & was woundering if i can use these videos towards working on my new 2 me 94 K1100LT (i know it has ABS 2 and more involved) I was thinking of taking it apart, because of the way it sounds (74,000mi) i posted a video on you tube to let people listen to it to tell me if normal or not (my first K bike, also own a 2010 RT) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1golRmfbTbk.html
