NYPD: On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at approximately 2320 hours, police responded to a 911 call of motor vehicle collision on the Gowanus Expressway approaching 92 Street, within the confines of the 68 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers observed a 30-year-old female, unconscious and unresponsive, within the passenger seat of a 2013 black 535-I BMW sedan. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the aided female deceased at the scene. The 30-year-old male operator of the vehicle was removed to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, in stable condition, and placed in police custody. Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined the BMW sedan was traveling west bound on the Gowanus Expressway, approaching Exit 17 (92 Street), when the vehicle struck the rear portion of a 2000 white Freightliner truck, operated by a 46-year-old male, which was stopped in traffic in the middle lane west bound on the Gowanus Expressway. Both vehicles remained on scene and the operator of the truck was not injured. The investigation remains ongoing.

What a compassionate witness! Usually they are so caught up being on camera that they make narcissistic remarks about how it affected THEM. This guy had nothing but compassion for all involved, despite the interviewer trying to egg him on. Nice to know not everyone sees the world as "all about me." Ali, thank you.

I don't have a car anymore and am complete homebody now. I smash that invisible right side brake the whole time I have to ride with my granddaughter or friend. Maybe once a month is all I can venture out now. Too much chaos for me.

They've had them for years. 35 years ago I was driving (coincidentally, a BMW) down Morningside Ave in Manhattan rushing my toddler son to his baby sitter as I was rushing to work when I decided in my impatience to pass a slow-moving panel truck at a high rate of speed crossing double yellow lines and for the first and last time in my life, I didn't have my seat belt on (to this very day, I still don't know why I wasn't belted) when suddenly in my rear view mirror was a yellow cab with a flashing red light. The cops (male & female) were extremely polite and professional as they made sure my son was strapped in his car seat. They weren't rude, sarcastic (as us Nu Yawkers tend to be, but I like and understand that), they didn't come off as being superior, they didn't lecture me, none of the above. They did their job and let me proceed on my way. It was nice to encounter two nice professional cops. As to your comment, I too was surprised by a taxi being used as an undercover vehicle.

That's belt parkway and brooklyn queens expressway under cover highway 2 unit. So dont use your phone while driving if you still haven't learned your lesson. They also look for impaired , impending traffic, drunks and keep our commute safe for kids seniors and all operators

That witness is a good dude. I always remember... when there is a fatal crash like that, or a crash where NO ONE has any idea what happened but they pull over, stop their car, and still go towards the accident to see if they can help in some way. People in those situations have NOTHING TO GAIN and everything to lose, and they still do the right thing, most people just dry by. Good dude.

I came upon an accident, an suv drifted wide in the turn, hit an oncoming pick up. Passenger window was at ground level, seat door to door seat came forward and twisted. I was the first person there, i panicked and started prying on the driver door over and over. You could only see the seat, i could only move the door about 6 inches.. Alot of contents from the suv were outside the vehicle, it was like a tiny junk yard. I started throwing stuff out of the way, clearing the vehicle. It was smoking and fluids all over the place. I couldnt imagine a person in that hunk of metal , trapped and pinned,, shit... Anyway, as i ran up to it, i said God, bind every hindering spirit, loose every ministering angel, in Jesus name... Then, i said hold on we'll get you out of there. From the passenger side i heard a man say, we're with you... The only thing i could do was repeatedly try to force the door open, but it just bounced back each time... Then the fire truck showed up, and the guy said how many are in there? A man from the driver seat said "its just me"... I hurried away onto work shortly after as more rescue personnel showed up.. granby colorado

When i ran up to the suv, someone else ran to the pick up. They had him out and drug him clear, badly broken arm all bent weird, ugly... bloody head and face, but conscious and talking, totally shocky ... Each car should have jaws of life inside so you can cut yourself out, when the cockpit is reduced by 45% and leaning right 45 degrees.. I watched alot of fatal racing crashes, I cant unsee them, i wish i could...gordon smiley, greg moore and many others...

Rolled my eyes a lot when I was younger and dad was training me on how to drive safely but it has stuck with me and gotten me out of near misses. Never tail gate, leave ample room between cars, advanced turn signals. Constant checking surroundings in case of immediate abrupt stops you don’t want to be a pancake between two semis so leave a gap in case you have to gun it for the ditch. Also when passing a semi wait until there’s plenty of room then pass don’t drive along the semi because chances are you will be in a blind spot pass as quickly and safely as possible.

Because the alcohol the drunk driver has consumed keeps them very limber...normal first reaction to an accident ready to happen is to become tensed up. They are limber, therefore very flexible when tossed around during the accident. I know this is true, my brother got many dui's in his life time, always managed to avoid any serious injuries...had many accidents while driving under the influence...

@@thisisme3238 I'm pretty certain these days that's a myth from those silly D.A.R.E. classes....everyone says that, but there's no real evidence of it anywhere as far as I can tell. (I know D.A.R.E. didn't provide any). What there is evidence of, however is if a drunk driver runs thru an intersection, he is more likely to broadside another vehicle, while another vehicle with a sober driver is less likely to broadside the drunk if he crosses in front of him due to his intact reaction time. This means out of 100 crashes, t drunk is less like to be broadsided (which is the worst kind of crash). A million years of evolution of the body dealing with trauma isn't likely to be topped by alcohol, you're body doesn't have time to tense up in the span of an impact, and the force of these impacts are so powerful that it makes the difference in tension between a drunk body and sober body hardly amount to more than a margin of error anyway. If anything, a sober person would probably suffer worse whiplash, while a drunk person would be more likely to suffer a broken neck due to their muscles being less effective in resisting a pulling force....

They don't brace for impact and are very limber and zoned out, therefore they don't react and usually don't go into shock. A sober person will do all those things and stiffen up, which puts extra tension on the body at impact.

I agree with you! I don't think some people get the full extent of what we (first responders) see on a daily basis. I know some people say, " Well, you chose the career," and yes, yes, we did. That's true, but could they do it? Can they mentally handle it? Can they put their lives in front of strangers? At the end of the day, we are all only human , we all have families, we all work hard to survive, we miss so much in our family lives, we all face judgments, we all suffer mentally but it's how we have to handle those situations, the toughest situations that will never leave our minds. I honestly pray you never have to see or be involved in a horrible situation. You seem to have a heart of compassion, and that's a beautiful thing❤stay safe 🙏

It wasn't his wife. Her name was Karen Diaz and the driver was Mark D. They were friends. He may have been driving drunk. I know someone that was friends with her. There is a GoFundMe setup for her family.

I travel all over for work driving isn’t my job I just do it to get to where the money is and the big trucks I respect but most of the idiots that drive them no I don’t and probably never will the crap I see them do the carelessness of there driving there is nothing professional about it. Some of the bs I deal with for instance yesterday driving out to Detroit area a few of the drivers thought I left my high beams on and then when I passed them in fast lane I had a spotlight shined at me when I was side by side one of them and another driver had his rear cargo light turned out and down he flipped that on it was also extremely bright lucky there none professional illegal and very dangerous ways didn’t cause a accident. But seriously a spot light like you would use to shine deer with or whatever stupid people.

Unfortunately I was there I was heading to one of my stops I am a truck driver I go down that route several times a week and you will not believe what I see going on too many cars are racing this incident right here was the result of that there were three cars very fast speeding chasing each other just a few minutes before it happened the past right by me and when I got to their location bad traffic it's so sad that the passenger passed away I can't believe when the family gets the news of the beloved one dead you know the driver was arrested for DUI I can't understand why would he be racing in those condition another passenger is dead the driver is alive totally the driver's fault he should be arrested and charged with manslaughter that's my opinion

The driver of the beemer was charged with a DUI and sentenced to 3-6 years in prison. What a joke, no wonder people drink and drive-no real consequences. He should have been charged with manslaughter as well.

Trucks without metal barriers fixed to rear mean that sedans are very vulnerable. As you can see the roof has been ripped off with very little damage to front of sedan. The sedan literally went under the truck. Therefore the impact was not absorbed. In Europe it is illegal to operate a truck without these well designed rear impact s barriers welded to the main chassis. They’re tested by government agencies to make sure they work and also incorporate reflective material. They’re designed to crumple on impact and give drivers a second chance.

I was the first person to approach a vehicle that ran off the road and went through a concrete sign. I was preparing to do cpr and both the driver and passenger were crushed, died instantly. There was nuthin left of their bodies to distinguish gender or age. By size, they were both adults. Someone yelled, do cpr. I said, if you saw what i just saw then you would know its not possible. I did check for a pulse on each victim, in the neck areas. The head and necks were fine but the chest and down was crushed. I had just had cpr certificate. That was the worst ive seen even when i was a ff.

I think the worse part was the VERY end when they took her out of the car. The sheet that was over her was so soaked with blood..It must have been a horrific injury.. DOT observation: I've been in transportation since the mid-80s, that trailer is very old and the ICC bumper is not made to today's standards as it broke away pushed to the underside. Taillights and top rear markers non-operational. Vehicular speed in any case. Prayers to all involved

You don't know that the collision didn't cut a wire or blow a fuse to the trailer lights. The ICC bumpers are only rated for roughly 35 mph when hit dead square in the center. Any off side impacts lower that rating substantially even at today's standards. You can't lay the blame on the older trailer for something that a drunken, speeding, 4 wheel driver caused.

Sorry for the family of the victim. The driver is a douche nozzle for not taking responsibility before, during, and after. I agree, he should have had to stand there and watch his passenger get cut out of the wreckage and placed in a body bag. On a different note, I think the 2 officers started to get freaked out because the wipers were moving the sheet. Amazing what works and what doesn’t after a wreck.

The Trailer does not have rear bumper, which would have prevent a "run under". It's illegal to not have that rear bumper. Unless it was broken off from the impact.
