The BMW X4 is the coupe brother to the BMW X3 SUV, but what it loses in practicality it gains in sporty styling. From the windscreen back, the X4 is totally different from its more sensible SUV brother and like the X3 it comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines. But is it better than the Mercedes GLC Coupe? Ginny finds out.

JamKick They are but they aren’t similar that much. BMW wants people to compare the X models by even numbers to odd. Basically BMW wants people to see the difference between the X1,X3,X5,X7 and the X2,X4,X6 now do you see the difference between them your suppose to compare even with even numbers and ofd with odd it’s so complicated I’m not going there.

I don't know why but I think the x2 and x4 are somewhat unnecessary if I wanted a coupe I would have bought one if I'm wanting to buy an SUV one of the main reason would be due to the vast amount of space and slightly boxy a coupe SUV seems kinds niche

Looks like it has a Down syndrome. And i do not know why but front fenders are also a bit narrow and wierd,somehow spoils the wheels. Looks really silly if you ask me

It looks weirdly disproportionate. The X6 is fine, this is just too small. Maybe it's the window-line that tapers towards the centre at the rear, that's just weird.

I simply do not understand why BMW would make the X4 40D but not a 540D or X3 40D. Mind boggling. An X3 40D would be my go to, not a compromised (luggage space) X4.

I should get a job at BMW designing cars. I can`t believe they actually have somebody employed who came up with that design in the first place and then the bosses actually agreed it was a design good enough to be put on sale. BMW`s aren`t often good looking but that is a big bag of steaming shite!

The design looks boring after all this years of almost same design. As new A4 driver I like that X4 stayed on rotary dial and not only touch screen like new A6,A8 and VW Touareg. It is much more practical and safe to use when driving and you dont need to streach your arm for every single thing...

Mr Ed it’s dumb to think anyone who likes, wants, or even drives this car is a “soccer mom”. That’s daft assumption. I own a X4 and I’m a man. I’m single and wanted something sporty but also needed a bit of practicality with a bit of ability to go off-road with my mates when we go camping, exploring etc out of town on weekends. Could have gone with 4 series Grand Coupe (or 3 series touring) but that will easily get damaged on the off-beaten paths we take. The X4 does everything I’d want a car to do for me at this stage.

Costel Coaie I have a tuned C63, tuned Impreza and another track car. Had an M3, Focus RS, various others. Do plenty of work on two of them myself, and do track days so please tell me again how I know nothing about cars whilst you glorify an absolutely gopping clanger of an SUV 😂

Although BMW has always introduced the best diesel engines, top build quality and performance from another level on their SUVs, something has gone horribly wrong with the latest exterior design language.... Oversized grills, big round headlights, busy front, no character.... Compare this looks to a Range Rover Velar or PORSCHE Macan... I wouldn't buy it because it looks like this no matter how good it is.... (P.S. I own a BMW E83 X3 that i like much more in terms of design ...)

Not sure I would say top build quality for the X range. Surely BMW's least reliable cars by far with huge maintenance costs. They can be a real money pit. I do love the interiors and the i drive system is one of the best systems on the market but personally I'd rather have a reliable car I'm not constantly throwing money at so find the more reliable Japanese SUV's much more appealing even if a little dull in places. That said I don't like the exterior of this BMW at all. I'm so tired of seeing that grill and the basic shape seems unappealing. I wish they'd use a grill more like the i8 to update them a bit. www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/237

the BMW interior looks great but after 1-2 years everything is in scratches. I have x5 with same fake chrome plastics inside, they scratch soooo easily ! the quality of the materials is not so good

Donovan Campbell No the odd number BMWs are needed, the X1 is a family car that’s compact for the average family with little kids and want way more comfort than the entry level cars like Toyota or Mazda. But when there’s a family that lives near the beach and wants a good comfort without to much money to spend and have a dog you get the BMW X3. If you want even more Luxury and tech and have the off road ability also have a great looking SUV and it’s the best SUV ever basically because the X5 is very hard to beat for the price. But if you a celebrity and want higher class than all and if you thought the X5 is still not good enough you get the ultra Super SUV X7.

Why are all car review sites still obsessed with pushing diesels? To my mind, the only reason you'd have one is if you're doing 15k+ miles a year, or leasing. As a private buyer they make no sense and are dirty horrible things. No one's going to want a 3 year old diesel with low miles when you're going to be forking out £2k for a new dpf. BTW the X2, X4 and X6 are all fugly anyway.

I feel sorry for the Europeans having the driver on the right side vs on the left here in the US. Operating the infotainment system with your left hand is probably a little cumbersome.

I thought this design would be more aerodynamic than the x3 but guess what? It’s not. X4 has a CdA of 0.777 and the X3 is 0.770, the difference is marginal. Hopefully the downforce is higher for the x4 or the lift is lower because most cars produce lift instead of downforce at high speed despite some claiming their family cars feeling glued to the road at speed ... lol nonsense. The old x4 which look smoother has an even worse CdA. The x3 has a Cd of 0.29 which is really good but slightly bigger frontal area as compared to 0.3 for the new x4 which is not bad after all. As a comparison the old x1 which is smaller has a CdA of 0.749 so the total wind resistance is slightly reduced. Excellent review. If you are a fan of the X6 you will like the X4. Same design language in a cheaper version. If you don't like the X6 , you will not like the X4. Great review

Had an 840i……. Got a dog and needed a more dog friendly car. So got the X4 M40d…… I hate diesels, love petrols, hate SUV’s love cars……… bloody love my X4…….. Just goes to show you don’t know what you really like. Or should I have got an X6…..

What is the point of the X4? Rear seat may be cramp for taller people. The trunk has less space because of the sloping roof. On top of that it is just as ugly as the Mercedes GLC

Ondra Neuman It’s ugly in the back but don’t have to be extra by saying the isetta is better.. I hate when people get so dumb over something small quality is nice the tech is nice the color is good it’s performance is good enough to compete with a A class and a M235i. Overall a nice car. But not my taste the X4 M that’s coming will change things up.
