BMW X5 4.4i Water Pump Replacement DIY

My buddy broke down on the side of the road--his belt was shredded and we had to cut it out. When testing all of the pulleys, I noticed the water pump was bad. I did a radiator pressure test and that caused water to squirt out from the sides of the water pump. So it was confirmed bad and we changed it out.

Phantastic tutorial, thanks a lot for this! Need to replace my water pump, it broke with 207.000km / 130.000 Miles. I replaced the generator already 5000 miles before, so got used to remove all the fan stuff and the belt before. Thanks to your vid I'm not worried at all now :-) Just need to buy such an electric ratchet, looks quite handy.

I just replaced my water pump on my 04 E53 X5 which was slightly different, but thanks to your video I was able to complete this. The bolt behind the pulley was incredibly difficult and I could not see what wrench you used. I found it useful to use a 10mm ratchet Wrench with a flex head any other wrench did not work in that super tight space. Also in my case the new pump has to be placed with the bolt in place as there is no space to get the bolt in after placing the pump. Anyway, Thank you for your video and continue posting!

Quick tip that could save you time in money check your fan tightness. If it’s been off before you might be able to just spin it off without the tools I found out the hard way after trying to avoid buying the tool and needing to get in there several times when I finally decided to take the fan off , I just tried it with a regular wrench with a quick tap they. came right off

Top tip: use the jack to force the bars on the special tool for the fan clutch removal. No need to hammer anything so no excess force on the water pump shaft bearings.

Hi love your clear and informative videos. Just followed your procedure and I still cannot separate the fan clutch from the water pump spindle but by your third method I was able to remove the water pump. However when you took the water pump out the 2 pipes at the back of the water pump remained in p;ace unfortunately for me they came forward and I had to use a pipe wrench to get the pump off them, how do I reseat these as it is near impossible to see inside and under the cylinder head, please don't tell me have I have to remove the head, its my neighbours car and I am just trying to help him out of a jam?

I'm surprised there was no mention of bleeding the cooling system as a final step. I failed to do this and it overheated on me. It turned out the 'auxiliary' water pump used in this procedure was NFG. Once i replaced it I could see it purged a lot of trapped air from the system.

Thanks! So far I have new fuel pump tune up could packs and plugs fuel pump relay new fuel pump fuses in glove box & under hood. New ignition switch and alternator no fuses blown. I'll try the starter next. I also scanned for codes I got 2 o2 sensor codes. The ones you talk about in your other video. I literally drove the car to Get gas in it. Then I heard a strange noise kinda like something was traveling through the engine. Next time I attempted to start then I heard a weak crank & car would not start. Some mornings on cold engine I would start & car would run and cut off I was having that problem intermittently. Could that have been that leaking hose causing starting issues or if you have a bad starter will your car cut off?

30:34 The tensioner bolts on this engine have a weirdly high torque spec. It's 22 ft.lbs. if I recall correctly, which is much more than the 15 ft.lbs. that is typically called out for an 8mm bolt. The factory manual also states that it must be a class 10.9 fastener...probably because a standard class 8.8 would be at risk for snapping at the higher torque spec. The reason for this is because of the crappy tensioner design used by BMW. It has very little travel, and the tensioning strut is very stiff. Because of the very limited travel the design is also very sensitive to belt length. The belt most often recommended if you go to O'Reilly's or other chain stores is too long. You need a 7PK1635 belt... If you look carefully you'll see the piece that the bolt tightens against slip after he tightens it. Mine did to before I found it has such a high torque spec. Like I said, it's a shitty design...

Great video!!!!! I however, recommend replacing tensioners and pulley assembly after seized water pump, in addition to replacing the O rings in the rear of the transfer pipes. My reasoning is, if your car has enough mileage to have seized a water pump, those o rings are the same age and ready to be replaced. Otherwise you'll find yourself repeating the job for a leak and or noisy operation resulting from a faulty tensioner or pulley. Happened to me on a 2002 E65 4.4. If you've never done this job, the only benefit to not replacing the additional parts is that when they fail, you'll find that you've completed the tear down in less than 30 minutes.
@50sKid
@50sKid 6 лет назад
You're right. I had actually already replaced the pulleys before. Good idea on the rear o-rings though--I guess we'll have to cross that road when we come to it.

My E53 4.4 is leaking a lot of coolant on the weeping hole, would it be that pipe under the intake manifold behind the pump?
@allusernamestaken01
@allusernamestaken01 6 лет назад
I just did this last week but I think the thinner pipe tore the gasket and it's now spewing coolant everywhere. I'm gonna have to take out the intake manifold to get those pipes in place properly.
@slywhite1
@slywhite1 6 лет назад
Sorry I didn't watch this video when it was posted. I just made another comment a few minutes ago but you shouldn't have to pull your intake. Depending on the vehicle, there will be rings on the coolant pipes or you'll see a gasket made of silicone. If it's silicone and not rings, mark the spot where where the silicone is, clean it, then apply a 1/4" bead around the pipe and let slightly cure for about a half hour before reinsertion. That was my experience on a 97 E38. No more leaks.
@allusernamestaken01
@allusernamestaken01 6 лет назад
Thanks for your input. Just silicone would freak me out because of the heat and pressure. I wanted to do it properly and the rubber o-ring just didn't want o slide onto the pipe. I ended up removing the intake manifold and change the gaskets one the cross pipe too. So far no leaks but now I have problem keeping it running - which is another issue I need to solve.

I have a question I have a 2002 BMW 325i ive replaced a lot of old parts I have a vacuum leak, a tear in the hose at the bottom of the oil separator would this stop my car from starting? It's a weak crank but no start.
@50sKid
@50sKid 6 лет назад
It doesn't usually stop a car from starting, but it should definitely be addressed. A weak crank could be a bad battery, corrosion on the battery cables, or a weak starter.
