Penn State's Bo Nickal defeated Cornell's Gabe Dean in the 184-pound title match at the 2017 NCAA wrestling championships. See the full match replay here. Subscribe to the NCAA Championship RU-vid channel: ru-vid.com...
Probably Nickal's greatest collegiate match ever against his toughest opponent. He beat the consummate technician Dean at his own game, which was nearly impossible to do.
I know I’m late but I think it speaks volumes about his character that he immediately mentioned how he was looking for his family to thank them. And then during the entire interview he is scanning constantly to find his family. Seems like he’s got great character on top of his elite athletic ability
Both his parents were quite high-level athletes in their own rights. D-1 level, and one of them might even have been an Olympian if I'm not mistaken. Like Sebastian Korda in tennis, Bo Nickal has natural genetic athleticism. Look at the muscle difference between the much older Gabe Dean and Bo, yet Bo was able to ride Gabe and hold his own in tie-ups etc. Dude is going to be UFC MW champion. Can't wait. He would beat Izzy or Alex tonight.
I love Quint. how he always connects with the wrestlers, not just on the mat, but also off the mat. That little moment where he told Bo where his family was was very nice.
The strength of Dean in the third leg extended edge of the mat to almost turn Bo with a Jr high Johny three quarter Nelson hip over is insane! That scramble was nuts both almost scored in ten seconds!
Cornell, the Big Red, national powerhouse virtually every year. Crowning national champ after national champ. How can they not have owned a team title yet. It's amazing.
Thanks for the request, David. Unfortunately, the file we have of Nickal vs Martin 2018 has some issues. Hopefully we'll have it repaired in the future.
Dean should have gotten 2 points for neutral exposure in the 3rd period, but Koll didn't challenge. The rest of the match would have been quite different if the challenge had been made and won.
@@jessiedoggie1 Dean dominated. He wasn't given 4 pts in the third period, and Bo received 2 extra from the refs in the first round. Gabe was clearly robbed
Funny watching this match live and then watching it quite a few years later. Bo definitely was stalling that takedown was garbage and I felt like Gabe pushed the pace I love me some bo but that was very suspect 🤔
Dean was the better of the two in this match. Nickal got points that were marginal at best while Dean was snubbed toward the end. Impressive match, but this one does not feel right.
I thought the same thing but he was way too conservative and I think the end of the match came around sooner than he thought it was going to. His nerves may have just gotten the better of him in this particular match but u gotta give Bo the credit he deserved - he did what he had to do to get his hand raised at the end.
If I’m allowed to bring out my own opinion, I don’t think Nickal should’ve won. I’m a big Bo Nickal fan, but Bo’s takedown is one of the most controversial takedowns I have ever seen. Even looking at it now, I don’t think it was two
@@Michael-ii9fs I’m not assuming, and I’m not saying I’m an official in terms of scoring, but there have been things that have been much clearer than this and sometimes they don’t call a takedown. I’m not trying to assume, it’s just it doesn’t look like 2 to me
I don’t think it’s a controversial takedown; I think Nickal knew the rules and took advantage of them. He had control of the hips (by way of the leg and ankle) and Dean was on his butt. Even though it didn’t look like control, he certainly had it
@@ianshue2890 ... yeah - like Jordan Oliver's last minute take down of "what's his name," from Ohio State... Oliver absolutely got two and Bo's take down wasn't even as good as that...
Dean's coach robbed him he should of challenged the nickel takedown. At least the nearfall something deans last college match for the national championship!!!!!
@@poundinghogs8354 The official didn't indicate 2 and Rob koll had a challenge but didn't use it. So obviously he didn't believe there was control beyond reaction time either
@@poundinghogs8354 You don't understand reaction time its okay. 3x ncaa Champs rob koll understands it and thats why he didn't challenge it. If you're right why didn't Rob kill challenge?
Cornell owes a tip of the hat to the 1950s assistant coach Bill Layton. He was the guy responsible for taking a less than average Division 1 School and converting it into a National Champion producing machine. The one and only Bill Layton. What a friggin character.
Such a weird sport. Im a huge mma fan and understand how dominant these guys are there but like this whole match nothimg happened and he wins. Its a strange system of points
this is before ncaa added exposure prior to an awarded takedown. It may have been a different score if this had been after 2019 (maybe 2018, I don't remember exactly)
@@shellshock8505 interesting opinion. Doesn’t change anything I wrote. I’m sure if Gordon was in a match with Bo using collegiate wrestling The outcome would be different. The two forms of grappling overlap but there’s a clear difference. And no matter what you think of those abilities. He’s nothing compared to Gordon Ryan when it comes to Jujitsu.
Just curious if wrestler always wear this type of ear protectors, cauliflower ears will not exist right ? If so, why don’t people not wear this all the time for training ?
Bo Nickal for me was super overrated. If anyone here knows Pat Downey they wrrstle exactly the same. Everyone trues to work their offense on they and guys like this pride themselves off of your offensive mistakes. Bo Nickal is not very good. Hes a big move guy. His leg attacks are terrible
I used to wrestle. Gabe won easily and also dominated. Bo should have never received 2 pts in the first rd and Gabe should have received 4 pts in the third for dumping Bo on his back. For college level refs, this was terrible to see on national TV..
@@terranpaul4477 Can't turn somebody like dean did unless you have control. Dean dominated. He wasn't given 4 pts in the third period, and Bo received 2 extra from the refs in the first round. Gabe was clearly robbed
@@stylicho he actually wrestled his 8th grade year in Rio Rancho, NM for RR NM and placed runnerup at the state tournament. I wrestled in the same arena Bo Nickal wrestled in 10-11 years ago as a 8th grader this past may as a hs senior
