Boarded by Thai authorities - sailing SE Asia
We F@#Ked up! Not once but twice.
We have been sailing our floating home along the beautiful coast of Thailand getting to know the country better, immersing ourselves in the culture by signing our sailing teens up to a Muay Thai, kick boxing class.
We have been enjoying the freedom of travelling around the many tropical islands, on hired mopeds.
However, while traversing Phuket, the boys unfortunately crashed their moped, ending up under a truck and injuring themselves in the process.
The police were called.
Having heard terrible stories about Thai police dealing with tourists harshly, we spent several tense minutes believing they would throw the book at us. However, the reality was quite different.
Fast forward a few days and an incredibly stupid decision on our part, made while pulling up a mooring line, resulted in us once more rubbing shoulders and causing friction with the the water authorities in Phang Nga Bay.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

The Thai people believe that the better they are in this life, then they will be rewarded in the next life. I have never had a bad experience in Thailand. I flew Thai Airways from LA to Bangkok. One of my bags was missing but later delivered to my hotel. When I returned to the airport to fly home upon checkin they detained me which was concerning. After a few minutes an airline employee showed up with a check for $50 US for my inconvenience regarding the missing bag. They also seated me in business class all the way to LA. They are wonderful people.

That's a wonderful story Jeffrey. I might organise for my bags to go adrift when next flying Thai.
@joshl4111

I had a similar experience with a bag going missing while transiting through BKK - they called my name over the intercom, then at the desk told me that they couldn’t find my bag to place it on the next flight through to Cambodia. They were incredibly apologetic even though it absolutely wasn’t their fault (I wasn’t even flying a Thai airline), they put me up in one of their business class lounges then personally came to let me know an hour later that they had located it and it would be on the flight with me. I thanked them and went to leave the lounge and the lady just said “No, you can stay here” with a massive smile. Probably the best transiting experience I’ve had.

@@jz3689 The computers were down in my country of origin and they were literally writing down the names of people boarding the plane on paper. The transit point before Thailand didn't even receive anything digital and more than 200 people had to queue up at the transit desk. But sure, go off about how it's BS that it wasn't BKK airports fault that my bags were misplaced for an hour after that, or whatever. If I didn't get my bags back I probably would have blamed the airline I flew with the 90% of the way before reaching Thailand, that didn't enter my bag in any digital system.

Here's a tip for road rash from a veteran biker... Wrapping roasties in cling-wrap directly on the wound after cleaning helps to reduce scarring. It heals much faster than using bandages. Bandages tend to stick to the wound, breaking it open in places every time you tend the wound. Use the same method for cleaning and dressing the wound, just swap the bandage for cling-wrap. :You can still use bandages to secure it all better. My wife retained no scarring at all after our crash using this method, which she got from the tending nurse...

Stuff happens when boating but the reason they decided to cut their own mooring line had nothing whatever to do with the safety of your boat. They were worried that your boat would pull their seabed mooring free and that is a big deal to fix. You need to bring in a pneumatic drill, hydraulic cement and dive tanks. Just cutting the line was the safest option for them because they can braid in a mooring rode extension easily enough.
@TheCruisingKiwis
@TheCruisingKiwis Год назад

@@TheCruisingKiwis I think the load would ha been the same, just on a different line. No more load than waiting it out as the tide came up. The load would be equivalent to sinking the hulls another 100mm of mooring line to slip the eye off the cleat. The tide would have come up that same 100mm. Just one man’s opinion. Interesting.

@@kenatkins620 nah tide was on the turn. Might have come up another 10 to 20mm if at all. We still needed to wait a couple hours for any slack. You guys make out the mooring being cut as being the worst of your mistakes but by far, that scooter accident was way, way worse, on so many levels. Did you know that Thailand has the second highest death rate for road accidents in the world! Young Thai men (many of whom are on drugs) and thousands of cocky, young male tourists with no experience (and either drunk or stoned) roar all over Phuket like maniacs every...single...day. Scooter casualties are the #1 patient type at all emergencies in hospitals in Phuket and Koh Samui. And I am NOT exaggerating - I've been going to Thailand for over 35 yrs and own a villa in Samui for 10 yrs and you see it everyday (i.e. the ubiquitous Thai roadrash tattoos on young scooter drivers) and it never ceases to amaze me how stupidly people behave on scooters (no helmets, wearing flipflops or barefoot, weaving in and out like morons, texting while riding). Gosh, you have no idea how damn lucky your boys were. Count your blessing and slow the f*** down boys. You got so lucky this time. Don't have another one.
