Gyp Rosetti's glorious rant after Nucky Thompson declares he will only sell booze to Arnold Rothstein. Season 3, Episode 1. Belongs to HBO. I own nothing.
What does a dentist on ether look like? I imagine a man with a white coat stumbling like Hunter S Thompson. I'd say that only partially describes Rothstien
@@GrosvnerMcaffrey I'd imagine a dentist with ether will say "you won't feel a thing" while smiling like Rothstein did at Rosetti, because they know even with the ether the procedure is still going to hurt like hell.
Sheila LaShay I loved and dreaded Gyp at the same time....only problem was, Bobby Cannavale tended to chew scenery. But always unforgettable, riveting performances. I was glad and relieved to see Gyp go. It was indeed a mystery how someone as sociopathic, cruel, petulant and impulsive could have possibly risen as high as he did. Gyp Rosetti had some serious mental firepower, but not enough to really run with these big dogs...who were even more smart and cunning.
Trev0r98 The first time I saw the above scene; I turned the volume down. I couldn't believe his language how he referred to every race with a slur. OMG. But, I love the show and Bobby C one of the best. I'm caught up to season 5/5 and loving it. Are you?
Doesn’t help the situation to also lose it because someone else is losing it. It’s almost a side effect of ramping up the other person when you don’t match that energy and just take whatever they throw at you in stride. Especially the petty nonsense. It’s weird how not getting upset makes someone else upset.
He had all the cards... No matter what he was going to say wether he agreed to the new arrangement or not at the end of the day he'll have no other choice but to either find a new supplier or buy from Rothstein with a high markup.
@@renardopalmer9159 before modern anesthetic techniques, doctors/surgeons would literally soak a rag or sponge in ether, chloroform etc to put you under. It usually worked but many people died from the anesthesia and not from what ailed them. I mean, that still happens today but not at the rate it did then.
@John G lol I think it is more like after he killed the guy they were like "ah shit we can't just leave the dog here to die" and Gyp was like "he's mine now 😌"
He makes the same face when he goes to Tabor Heights to pretend to make a deal with him as soon as Gyp tells the newspaper boy which room he’s staying in. I knew as soon as he made that face that he must have had something planned.
Bobby Cannavale as Gyp Rosetti was a truly scary guy. You just never knew when he was about to blow up for no reason at all. Bobby is a fantastic actor!
Because he knows that in the end of the day, Rosetti can talk as much shit as he likes, if he wants to buy some booze he has to do it from him. And prices just got up...... exponentially.
@@DreamGyrl360 I had a boss from Sicily back in the 90's....a great guy, but just don't ever cross him. I stood up to him one time. He lost his temper and threatened me. His look, his eyes, his voice...he went full on psychotic but he was able to back down. Later that day, I apologized. He said we were cool. Two weeks later, I was transferred to another department. Bottom line...don't ever cross a Sicilian.
Gyp Rosetti is amongst my favorite TV villains of all time. Bobby Cannavale did an extraordinary job, especially since he joined Boardwalk Empire three seasons in and was the main antagonist for it and had so much screen time. Incredible actor and my favorite show!
@@MrLilfee I'm glad you love and appreciate Boardwalk as much as I do! P.S if you've not seen Banshee or Warrior you have to see them as well. Especially Banshee, 4 seasons of an absolutely underrated yet magnificent show by Cinemax (now HBO Max) so if you have access to that you should be able to stream it, as well as Warrior, a Martial Arts action drama based on a concept by Bruce Lee is an absolute banger as well🔥. Nice one.
I think the actor was probably straining his last nerve to keep from breaking character and laughing right out loud. That must have been a fun scene for everybody on the set.
@@ARTinDECAY massive respect to the cameraman who was able to travel back in time to bring us this rare artifact of a sexually frustrated twat in the RU-vid comments being a knobhead for no particular reason
@@nerdwhitenerd Yeah he died. Same as Gyp. Same as Nucky. Same as the majority of gangsters in this show and in real life. And?? That still takes nothing away from my previous point. It still stands.
When you're being insulted so well, you have to let it ride and don't respond because when it's that good, just let it be legendary. Don't ruin your insult with a comeback the probably won't be as good. This man was vicious
1:35 I love how Frank was trying to tell Rossetti to "leave it alone". The look on his face shows that he knew well how deep into trouble Rossetti was about to get, thanks to that temper.
I love how the minute Rosetti realizes he isn’t going to get what he wants literally everyone in the room is viciously insulted. Everyone paid the price for his misfortune 😂
@@thesunoversea Rossetti owned the room so much that no one in the room took him seriously and had Rosetti’s own men kill him. Rothstein was a legitimately dangerous person, Rossetti was a poser who thought that being the loudest made you the strongest.
+James Duro never disputed an awesome performance. just not "one of the best". It's only one of the best if you haven't watched many other series. There's nothing mafia related on boardwalk that we haven't already seen in other mob films/series' already.
+Recon Blackbird™ "i can name a dozen actors who did better on the sopranos" Go on. Only one's I can think of are Gandolfini and possibly the guy who played Christopher. And what do you mean 'prisoner of the moment', that season of Boardwalk was 3 years ago, how long do you have to wait before declaring something great?
Did he sign up for the 82nd airborne?? Bro I just laughed so hard at your comment at 3am and woke my girl. That was absolutely brilliant. Thank you bro.
I love how Rothstein smiles in the background as Rosetti goes off on everyone and betrays his hand to all in the room. Rothstein was a gambler and he was just sitting back watching Rosetti show all his tells.
@@mauricio460 A little weasel, eh? Wassamata you, Gyp? The real Rothstein was a hell of a fixer and businessman, until his gambling addiction took him down.
I've watched this scene so many times but this is the first time I've noticed that the only boss Gyp didn't insult here was Remus. "Remus shuns being insulted".
In a way he kinda did by letting him know that regardless of everyone getting the same news, that they weren’t on the same level/boat. But it was meager compared to the blazing onslaught he served everyone else with. 😂😂😂
@@niceguyeddie6427 It was not really an insult. Remus thought his reaction was over the top, but Gyp's point was he is worse off than the others because he is not making as much money, hence not being in the same boat as the others. The news from Nucky will not set Remus back as much. But Gyp has to buy his booze from elsewhere and it will not be cheap for him either.
@@spinmaster0 It wasn't just that he wasn't making as much: Gyp has to answer to Masseria, who'd naturally not be very thrilled to find out one of his underlings wasn't making as much dough for him. The others are either their own bosses (Nucky, Rothstein, Yale, and Remus) or are working for Rothstein (Luciano and Lansky), so their main worry is money, not the ire of the boss they work for. One of them--Yale--isn't even affected one way or another: he was infamous for mainly serving cheap, low-grade stuff (hence Rosetti's insult).
Great scene. I saw outtakes of this and the actors claimed Cannavale ad libbed most of this and none of them knew what he was going to say that's why their reactions are so real and funny.
@@diegosalgueirocastillo2700 I always thought he was referring to the fact that Rothstein knew about this deal, but didn't say anything of it. Hence creepin' around lol
Oh serious is that what they done I swear every good show gets ruined by greedy and inpatient huggers ups nearly every single one even the show Rome was buried by season 2.
For some people, it's common knowledge that there are super ultra-orthodox religious jewish sects wherein it is believed that they have sex in ridiculously modest ways (including having sex through a hole in the bed sheets). Thus, it's making fun of Jews (obviously, they're not all going to be that hyper-religious).
I love Charlie’s face at 1:43 you can totally tell he’s like “ oh fuck here we go” even Myers stopped smoking for a second and gave gyp that look. You can also see the pure rage in Charlie’s face after he’s called short pants.
That silent moment when Nucky talks about his decision being made easier and Gyp stops long enough to realize that he was singling himself out in a den of jackals was perfect. He's a good example of a guy who got where he is by being hyper violent and aggressive...but eventually that stops working. If you can't play the politics and diplomacy, you're never going to get far in the upper echelons, and viciousness isn't going to cut it when you've pissed off every single person in the room enough to want you dead. He just couldn't let anything even resembling an insult to him go, and that made him weaker than he was capable of perceiving. Hence, why he dies on a beach in a puddle of urine, choking on his blood after being stabbed by his own guys.
Yep, and as soon as he let on that he was lashing out from financial pressure he marked himself as prey. Everyone was laughing inside and wondering what kind of amateur clown only has one plate spinning at a time, and planning how to screw him over.
The only reason that he left this place not injured, or even not killed, is that he had Masseria behind his back. However, probably he wouldn't have got invited otherwise. There was no place for small players there.
@missbelled6700 not true, he is a capo for Joe masseria and they are businessmen with ties in crime. He is basically a soldier with more influence, while they know the business world, he knows violence. They know that he is dangerous and thats why he is even able to unsult them without being interrupted, except for Nucky who should probably have chosen to be a bit more tactical here, similar to rothstein, seeing who is behind gyp.
Rohit Gupta Luciano was a very dangerous man,but Al was dangerous and smart, payed those that could help him and killed those that wouldn't ! This was his advantage over most, and ultimately his rise to power.
Robert Cannavale absolutely killed this role. He played him so well that you believe he was only born to play Gyp Rosetti. He made us absolutely despise everything about him. His short fuse also had us guessing what will he do next. But he also always made us laugh with his rants and insults.
