ShowHowCast asked us whether we get motion sickness on a boat, and whether it has affected our choice to live aboard a boat full time. Here's our answer.
P.S. We have been having issues with our main camera and have ordered some new mics, so this is not as high-quality as our usual videos. We hope to be back up and running with the regular DSLR soon.

Excellent and comprehensive blog on seasickness and solutions. Should have more likes and shares. Great work.

Great Vlog, thanks. I think anxiety is also a component, so good to get yourself well organised and positively psyched up for any passage. I have also used a mini TENS device on my wrist, which is where the anti-nausea accupressure point is. It does help to distract me from impending sickness and anxious thoughts so I can get back to being positive.

I agree about the fear issue. It's a big component.

I go with the keeping the eyes closed below deck is good, then blink when you actually need to see something. Once had an Ear infection in one ear that worked great as well.

Superb advice all round. Agree totally. Interested too in your analysis of its origins, seems logical. I'm lucky in that I've only suffered it bad once, and death seemed a good option at the time ha ha ha, but now the moment I sense it, even slightly I take remedial action immediately and taking the helm works best. Thankfully its worked every time, touch wood. Cheers

Yes, being at the helm seems to help. Probably a combination of the eyes being on the horizon and also being in control (Similar to how most people don't get sick driving a car, just being a passenger). -E

You're welcome. Hope you haven't had much of a problem with seasickness.

I’ve noticed motion sickness comes from anxiety or the feeling of uncertainty. I’ve gotten over severe motion sickness by telling myself I’m fine and I’m actually excited to be doing what I’m doing! I’ve also heard of hypnotherapy permanently curing sea sickness.
@EmilyAndClark

Yes I agree. I've seen people puke on the dock coming to a boat.

Very good points. For me seasickness also has the element of trusting your boat and your self. If you and the vessel "have seen worse" helps tremendously. Telling my "system" that all is well helps too. I do that a lot. An other thing I found is that when you feel like you are fighting with the motion of the vessel you get sick easy, as soon as your nervous system learns to move with the motion you are OK and more or less over it. Good old Sea legs!

I agree. Fear is part of it, wish I had thought of that with the camera running.

Singing! To sing on a happy, silly, funny song does wonders. I did it early in my career at sea. Then I have advised many Seasick colleagues about the same thing and it works. Emely should try to roll a good song instead of closing her eyes the next time she goes to pick up something below deck.
@EmilyAndClark

I'll pass it along. She sings a lot already as you can see in our music videos.

Yeah I too get seasick. Tried the acupressure bands, not sure if they worked or not. Ginger helps. Used scopolamine patch with great effect but didn't like the lethargy it caused. Stay away from alcohol, caffeine etc. I like the get used to it first on a rocking boat idea. I knew a couple that were circumnavigating. They stopped in Florida for a bit to refill the kitty. The husband always got seasick during a passage and it went away.

Chris from Britaly suggests to wear a single earplug. This tricks your brain into not trusting your ears' and disregard their signal for motion. I have not tried it yet, but it seems logical and worth a try.

Interesting. Have to try that.

Very good information. I don't suffer in vehicles. Hopefully I won't be so susceptible when voyaging.

I have not done a long passage yet, so have not experienced it going away after x days. one thing that does work for me is to lie down and close my eyes. it passes nearly instantly, although only whilst you are still down. once you get up, it is instantly back. but as a break from the misery, for me it works a treat. great video, thanks!
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 3 года назад
Next time you are out there, after you get yourself settled back to feeling normal, try keeping your eyes closed till you are in the cockpit then only watch the water and sky for a while.
@raflanz6770
@raflanz6770 3 года назад
@@EmilyAndClark I tried that! but it was really weird, I would get nearly instantly sick once I got up and opened my eyes. not that build up that is how it started, it was almost instant! then I would lay down and it was gone... mostly I tried laying down in the cockpit when i could... that is a tip I got from a Tom Cunliffe video btw... not something I discovered on my own!

Well glad you have a way to get a break. There are different reactions, my ex-wife was one of the few who never got over it. She sailed to Hawaii and was sick for 2 weeks straight. Then still took off for central america.

@@EmilyAndClark whow... can't even imagine how bad that is... i'm kind of lucky... don't get it too strongly, and only get it for the first couple of days (when going out every day...). also, I know realized that if i take some pills on the first to third day and stop it from happening, after that I don't need the pills and i'm always ok. as of today only did day sails, but i'm moving into a boat in May so we'll see how I do as a live aboard!

I stepped onto a dock in Venice Florida after being on my boat for 30 days and could not even walk!My brain being so accustomed to motion .I love a sailboat!!!I sleep like a baby on one!

Ever take a land shower right after a day on a bouncy boat? It's impressively disorienting.

I can't go on a boat because of Seasickness, I've had plenty of horrific experiences getting ill while crossing but surprisingly I'm ok on a plane thankfully!

I read somewhere that you can put an earplug in your non-dominant ear to alleviate this, but never tried it as I haven't been seasick ever (crosses fingers).

Sea sickness is kind of weird, som people can have it at some occasions, and in another situation feels nothing. It also has very much to do with what kind of vessel you are going with. Big ferries and cruising ship's can be a disaster. While smaller boats and yacht's never give a problem, for some people.
@derekp6636

Seems like it effects some people more than others, I've always enjoyed the thrum of the boat under way on the larger vessels. Heights are unfortunately getting less comfortable the older I get!

Very soon. We may start filming the next tomorrow. It's going to be about how to create a brokerage account and how to place an order for an index fund. I landed a deal with Schwab. New accounts started for my viewers will get a free $100.

Stay busy on deck. I got sick on a cod fishing trip to Georges Banks years ago. 10-15 ft seas and we motored out there over night. I was green in the gills when we got to the Banks. I started fishing and felt better and it did calm down too. On the next trip I brought Sea Bands (pressure point on wrists) with me and didn't get sick but it wasn't as rough. Stay away from other sea sick people!! Lol

Nice braids and they are almost sawing your Lavalier off the cable. 😉

Ugh, I know. I don't usually have my hair down and we shot a few of these in the same day with the same problem. We also had some major camera problems. Bear with us for the next few videos. We'll get better, and start using an earpiece to monitor our sound during recording, so we can catch these things before the editing stage! -E
@MiQBohlin
@MiQBohlin 5 лет назад
Yes, monitoring sound is to do it professional (what ever device you use, makes a big difference). When you hear it - you know what's happening. But how long did those braids take to make?

I wonder does sleeping in a hammock in rocking boat help for seasickness? Old ships have hammocks in them for the crew.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 лет назад
I think a hammock is worse. They used hammocks to save space. The officers slept in solid bunks. -C
@Juke172
@Juke172 5 лет назад
Emily & Clark's Adventure thanks for the info! Hammocks do on ground help some people sleep when they gently swing side to side. But boats can be totally different case here I guess. Just more and more disorientation with the boat.

Candy Ginger or just Root. Thanks!

I've used store bought or homemade ginger ale in the past, but we've carried candied ginger too. I love ginger so I have a hard time not eating the whole bag right away! -E

We have had very good luck with scopolamine patch and meclazine. Will try to get sturgeron here in The Bahamas. Was unable to purchase in Canada last year.

The name of that drug you can buy other than US
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 лет назад
It's on the screen when we talk about it. So I'm not sure what you are asking. The drug we like is called sturgeron. Sometimes called other things. In French countries it's sometimes something like tourista but I don't really remember. The real drug is cinnarizine. Again that is on the screen of the video.

I'm literally getting seasick listening to this. It sounds like your mic is underwater. Maybe it's your braids.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 лет назад
Yes, sorry, it's the braids. I don't usually wear them down and wasn't used to them getting in the way. We learned our lesson on this day of filming. The sound might show up in another video or two in this series shot the same day, but we know how to avoid it now. -E

Yes, sorry. We just rebraided her hair with more smaller braids. They act differently. A new thing we have to be aware of.
