I’m just saying this video was boring and involved too much talking and explaining. He can take that as constructive criticism or he can ignore it. What the rest of you think doesn’t really matter. I’m happy to see he has your support though. He deserves it.

Lou also showed a tip for keeping the lid of the paint can from sticking and building up dried paint in the rim. He pokes holes in the gutter of the rim with an awl, so the excess paint drips back into the can. I have used this tip and can attest to its value.

Hi Pat, Yes, that is also a good one. It's hard to see in the video, I did that when I used the paint 3 years ago. When open it was in amazingly good shape. I've had past comments that it would cause the paint to dry out. Obviously not true! Thanks for all your help! Bob

Bob, nicely done as always. I was particularly interested in watching how you applied the final coats of paint to the hull with the roller.. Your viewers might want to know using a roller requires a little bit of practice and knowledge. The fine roller nap you used and the dregree of pressure when appling the paint can be critical to the final outcome of the finish. You nicely explained the importance of the wet 'edge' when applying the paint and not 'overworking' the paint on application, both of which are unfortunately common rooky mistakes. I was wondering if you recommend wet sanding is between finish coats. My guess is it might really come down to how smooth you want the finish to be on the hull. I agree with others about the beautiful interior of the boat. I know its going to be painted but what a bloody shame to cover it up with paint. Personally I would give it a bright finish which would look amazing!

I really like the Lust varnish too. I was extremely impressed with how well it sprays and cures in cold weather. Nice trick with the razor Bob. I'll be adding that to the arsenal.

Thirty years ago, I tried to cover the top side with expensive bottom paint. This was a terrible idea. The top side finish was dull and chalky. I had to repaint it with top side paint. Also, I had covered my new oars with this expensive bottom paint. On my maiden row of a new wooden boat my hands began to burn from the chemicals in bottom paint. Just passing on some hard learned lessons. I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for sharing. Mike

Fwiw when I use a non orbital sander I attach a nice smallish shop vac hose to it. Really keeps the dust down, and the sand paper also stays clear, lasts longer. It's a bit awkward, but I attach the power cord to the vac hose, and drape the lines over my shoulder.

Great work! In the late 70's I made a 10 foot hydro from a kit Then, about the same year I found the Gougeon Brother's book They sold plans for a cold molded pram Bought the plans Ordered the cedar veneer from a company listed in WoodenBoat magazine lofted the boat and built a very nice (first attempt :) Been buying their magazine off and on since the first issue Wish I had the money to go to their classes One neat class would be taking the lines of an actual hull Also in 83 wanted to go to the Northwst School of Wooden Boat building The guy that started the school use to build vessels like tug boats Had the money for the school Just never had the money to live in Port Townsend for that length of time One of those cases where the local people have the advantage

Also had bought Woodenboat's Yankee Tender plans Then before I could build it. Had to move out of the house and into an apartment So, there went my 20 inch bandsaw table saw jointer etc Asked Woodeboat if I could make a 4 foor model They said sure So instead of making big boats Been making small ones Like half hulls and boats from the Smithsonian plans A neat one would be a sandbagger ,Texas scow Catboat 2 oats I would like to make full size would be a 2 masted crabbing skiff and a double ended Maryland crabbing skiff The Eastern Shore Also the stick up rig is interesting Main mast slants aft forward mast slants forward

Is it plausible to add a colour tint to the fibreglass resin alleviating the need for primer and top coats? In my case it is for a timber kayak hull i am building so it is only in the water a few hours at a time. Thanks for a truly engaging program.

I suppose you could use a dye. Not sure of the benefit of doing so. All epoxies are not UV resistant so one needs to either varnish or paint that has UV protection (marine paint or varnish) Most dyes are transparent, if that is what you're looking for it would be much easier to stain the wood (alcohol based) before glass fiber and resin. Thank you for getting back to me, it will be really great to have a go at what you have achieved with Victoria & Haven! Victoria feels like a good start for me. I have grown up surfing & surf life saving here in New Zealand and since becoming a father I've been thinking of ways to develop my relationship with the ocean, in ways in which we can do things together, have fun and learn some valuable skillsets. I'm not exactly starting from scratch but I would like to slowly build my confidence in sailing & building a boat - the ultimate goal (if I were to set one - would be to perhaps take on an old classic blue water cruiser).. but as a father of young boy (soon to be another) i won't be rushing this process

What a magistrate surprise when you flipped the beauty over ... I was very happy to see all that beautiful wood showing itself off when revealed! It would be sad to see that all covered in paint as it currently looks like a fine piece of furniture! Perhaps a clear epoxy would maintain that appearance yet be easy to maintain.

Very well done video. The tiller mechanism is fascinating. I am uncertain about covering the whole hull with ablative antifouling bottom paint. It is formulated to rub off easily. I can see this making a mess getting the dinghy on and off deck. It will rub off on everything and everyone it touches. Since it is formulated to be somewhat poisonous, its not stuff you want all over the place and on your hands. While it makes sense to have it below the waterline as topside paint may not hold up well when the dinghy is left in the water, above the waterline it will just rub off easily while bouncing off other boats at a dinghy dock and make a mess of fenders when coming along side the mother ship. Given that its just a dinghy that can be easily pulled out of the water to clean the bottom, full-on bottom paint to protect from fouling may be overkill. Just painting the bottom with the 2-part epoxy primer and calling it good would probably take care of the paint requirements without having the maintenance issue of re-applying expensive toxic antifouling bottom paint all the time. The epoxy primer would be easy to clean, works great below the waterline, and will hold up above the waterline for a very long time. It will be interesting to see how the bottom paint works out. Steve can always sand it back and apply a bit more epoxy primer if he doesn't like how the bottom paint holds up. Topside paint above the waterline for a bit more cosmetic color is always an option.

Hi Nick, I appreciate your concerns. I had spoken with the technicians at TotalBoat and given the parameters of the boat being in fresh and salt water for extended periods of time the Krypton paint is what was recommended. Given it copper free formula this is the most environmentally friendly bottom paint. It was not recommended to use topside paint due to being submerged for a prolonged time. Yes, it is designed to slough off whether it is just painted below the water line or the whole boat, you would still have the same issue of a chalky surface. Painting the whole surface is a non-issue. All boats require yearly maintenance. If Steve is unhappy he can certainly paint it with a different paint. Time will tell. I'm looking forward to completing the tiller mechanism. Thank you for watching. Cheers, Bob

@@TheArtofBoatBuilding Something like VC Performance Epoxy is a bottom paint but not antifouling. It is designed to be used below the waterline, is 80% the cost of Krypton, would last multiple seasons with minimal care, is not chalky when you touch it and is not toxic when dry. The downside is you would need to sponge off below the waterline to remove any growth on those occasions when the dinghy is left in the water for extended periods. But in the long run, it is up to Steve and once he actually gets some time on the water he will have his own opinions on what works for him.

@@NickSchade Interlux VC seems bullet proof. I agree with a vessel so light, it would be easy enough to flip and quickly scrub. Or hit it with a power washer when available. Regardless, the skipper makes the final call in these matters.

If you were going with a clear hull finish, would a different varnish apply? Since say, a strip kayak, most people sand between coats, to fill the weave and get a glassy surface. Or does this one have an sanding option...

Any good marine varnish that has UV protection will work. It is important to put on several coats of varnish to protect the epoxy finish which susceptible to UV damage.
