BOAT WORK in paradise IS all it’s CRACKED up to be | 86 | Beau and Brandy Sailing
We had always planned on being in Grenada for the 3 months of hurricane season, what we didn't plan on was spending most of our time here repairing Saoirse from a 2 foot crack in the hull we got on the way here. As you can imagine, it’s a lot of work, so we gave ourselves a couple of well deserved breaks, diving, snorkeling and fishing with friends, but we have guests coming very soon so it’s time to get back to boat work in paradise. #sailingsaoirse #boatwork #boatlife

Next time!! Add less MEKp to increase pot life. Get the resin out of the large container and on the fiberglass to slow it down. Resin goes off faster in a big pot. Roll the laid with a roller to squish out the bubbles. The roller is definitely touch. You must learn the right touch. Not too hard, not too soft. Harder on some things!!!! Last layer has wax to shut out the air so it drys hard. Ask me if you got questions. Rebuilt 5 boats. Working on 6 and 7.

if your boat is "unbalanced" ,your not sailing, get some sanbags and put on deck in the bow area. You can move this balast around the boat where its required .when your finished with it.Its sand just dump it overbord or take it back to the beach where you got it .

you're on top of it. YES, you'll want to grind out your bad glass work and redo it. be sure to roll it out with Zero air bubbles. it's critical for long term adhesion, etc. the two ribs you've added are good. it wouldn't hurt to add a third in between the two you've already done, if not add thickness, feathering it out on the side walls. Meaning, with each layer go wider, strengthening the weak spot and spreading it out, ultimately lessening the the PSI in the weak area that was damaged/repaired.

I don't know how water makers work but I assume it has to draw sea water in from outside the boat. I assume you drilled your intake hole for the water maker when you were on the hard. Sorry but I did have a flash of you using a hole saw bit on your drill to make the hole in the boat while you were in the water. Haha we all have an evil streak inside of us. Congratulations on doing what appears to be a great hull repair. It was awesome that you were able to get some expert advice.

Tim Miller ummm; that would be a total miracle because the last wonder woman cost me a home, a business and peace of mind. I’ve just opened one businesses and creating another related business, now work 7 days a week and looking to buy a 42’ WHITBY. Which I will redesign, rebuild most of it to suit my needs in an all condition, sea worthy vessel. She’ll have to invest the next five years in labor, educational accomplishments, and contribute financially just to achieve the final goal of seeing the world. Send her on over; there’s plenty of things to do and five years to get there then expect to benefit from it for at least 10 to 15 years.

Good to see you cracking on with the work. Fantastic that Tula's Endless Summer just made it open house for you. We subscribe to their channel. The pooches seem to get along well and that was a fantastic gesture that you only get in the sailing community! Re; Bladder. Take it thats a temporary fix? There is a company in the UK that does custom tanks to your shape and design. Think its Tek Tanks? But could make you a tank that exactly fits that space with all the outlets needed. If not somewhere in the states that could do the same? As for boat mess. Try re-varnishing the companion way steps when two pooches need to get out twice a day! We have pallet wood as temporary steps while we put 12 coats of varnish on the teak steps with a rub down between coats. Love your vids they are so real. Sail Safe guys. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

Oh Beau! Just when I thought your repairs couldn’t get any worse. I would have thought that going through the process of the boat cracking apart would have taught you something about the massive forces you are dealing with. When those waves were pounding the sides of your boat the forces generated were like the repeated forces generated by a large trip hammer in a machine shop. Enough power to have broken apart the true structural fiberglass of your boats hull. That structural fiberglass hull was made up of layers of strong woven roving and woven cloth fiberglass materials that were applied in alternating directions to maximize strength. Remember, that true structural glasswork FAILED Due to the repeated forces applied to it. You replaced that original strong structure with the weakest fiberglass material made, chopped strand mat. You also used the most brittle resin available, plain polyester. Add to this your unfamiliarity with the materials and I can virtually guarantee that you ended up with a much, much to high ratio of resin to glass which further compounds the brittleness problem, except this time on an exponential curve. Not only is polyester resin brittle, it also has very poor adhesion to previously cured polyester resin. That’s why they have to lay the entire glass in one continuous run when they build a boat with polyester resin. Backtracking slightly to the chopped strand mat you used for your hull repair. Yes, they use chopped strand mat when they build a boat, quite a lot of it in fact. But it’s only used for two purposes. The first use is as the first layer of fiberglass laid onto the gelcoat that was sprayed onto the mold. They use it here only because it’s smooth surface prevents any “print through”. Print through is where you would see the grain and texture of a layer of the stronger fiberglass cloth showing through the gelcoat if the stronger more desirable cloth was used as the first layer. This layer of chopped strand mat doesn’t add any appreciable strength to the finished hull layup, it’s only used there for a cosmetic purpose. The second use of chopped strand mat is to put it in between the layers of roving and heavier cloths (on cheaper built boats that is, more expensive boats use lightweight fiberglass cloth instead of chopped strand mat). The reason chopped strand mat is used here is to fill the voids that would be left if you tried to use 2 layers of alternating direction woven roving material directly against each other. Chopped strand mat is great for this as it basically turns to mush when the resin hits it (as I’m sure you discovered when you used it). This mush can very easily be moved around by rollers and pressed into all the small gaps in the roving and cloths, filling them and creating a void free glass composite material. Again, the mat itself adds very little strength because it doesn’t have any linearity to it to pass on forces to adjacent areas. (Though it does add great strength to the resulting composite structure by assuring its void free). So that’s where you were after your initial attempts at fixing the hull. You had a weak, brittle, poorly adhering patch applied. Let’s move on to your most recent attempts with the bulkheads. The bulkhead approach is a good one in that they will help alleviate the oil canning of the hull in the area that failed. The oil canning in the most severe weather conditions that you faced probably had the hull panel moving back and forth about 2 inches, possibly more. Again consider the forces required to move the hull that much. Your use of the honeycomb material was about 1/3 correct and 2/3 error. Let’s look at the 2/3 error first. It will help if you visualize a piece of the honeycomb that’s long and narrow like a beam while trying to wrap your head around what I’m saying. Think of a piece of it that’s 2” wide x 36” long. The primary benefit of honeycomb is in situations where the pressure is applied to the large flat surface (think the 36” dimension). If you cover one face of your imaginary piece of honeycomb (beam) it becomes quite a bit stronger. If you try to flex it by pressing on the fiberglassed side it will still flex quite a bit. Flex it by pressing on the side that hasn’t been fiberglassed and it won’t bend as much. Glass both sides and it becomes quite rigid UNDER FLEXION but if you put one end of the beam on the ground and add your full weight pushing down on the beam and it will crumble and break. Now that you’ve imagined it as a long narrow beam and understood how the flex and compressive forces work you can go back to thinking of it as larger panel, the flex and compression still work the same way. This tells you that honeycomb panels are ideally suited to their intended usage of creating light weight walls, decks, floors etc where the primary force is on the large flat surface as opposed to the edge surface. Sadly your project doesn’t have the primary force on the large flat surface, it has it on the edge. Nor do your bulkheads need light weight as you’ve told us in the video that your boat needs more weight in the front. You would have been better served using marine grade 3/4” plywood. So far we’ve only looked at the physics of your bulkhead project. Now comes the implementation. Again, it looks like you’ve used chopped strand mat, the stuff that’s only designed and intended to be a filler material, and it’s hard to tell in the video but it looks like you’ve only put one, maybe two layers of fiberglass on. I can only pray that you at least fiberglassed both sides. Do you really think that you’ve created a structural member that can withstand the forces which shredded your hull? If you do, try this little test. Take a scrap of your honeycomb and glass it in the same way that you’ve glassed you’re bulkheads. When it’s cured take a regular claw hammer and hit it as hard as you can on the edge of your panel using the flat side of the hammer. That will be a force that’s magnitudes smaller than the forces on your boat we’re. How do you think your panel will fare? Never underestimate the forces involved. There may not be a handy fisherman to save you next time. My advice? I know you don’t want to hear it, having put in so much time, effort and money, but to have a realistic repair on your boat you need to to take out everything you’ve done and start over with the right materials. One possible option to that would be to grind out the chopped strand mat major hole repair you did, then redo it with epoxy resin and a combination of heavy biaxial glass cloths, roving & chopped strand mat (where needed as a filler between layers). You’d also have to beef up the glassing on your honeycomb bulkheads using heavy biaxial glass cloth to a thickness of at least 1/8” more new material, but at least you wouldn’t have to tear the honeycomb out if you did that. The only other thing I could recommend would be to sell the boat as is to someone who would never ever do anything but daysail it within 3 miles of shore on reasonably calm days, but that wouldn’t be very ethical. Sorry to be so blunt but I’m trying to potentially save your lives by taking the time out of my day to write all this. It wouldn’t be ethical for me to NOT try to intervene, having seen what you’ve posted on your videos. I’m not in the least blasting you personally. You’ve tried to do your research and get sound advice but sadly, for whatever reason, (Murphy’s Law maybe), you’ve gotten some horrible guidance along the way, apparently from more than one source. Look on this as a learning opportunity, I made some very scary mistakes myself in my younger days before I learned better. Fortunately I lived through them (though sometimes I probably shouldn’t have). That’s all I’m trying to do here, help you through a mistake that’s no fault of your own so you can live on to make many more and learn from each of them. (Though this is a particularly hazardous one with cruising plans that would take you out of inhabited waters like the Caribbean).
