Ok, so these are the top sailboats for sale in Maine right now - in our opinion! This is our second to last video of 2023! So we decided to keep it close to home and look for our 6 favorite boats currently for sale in Maine. The three of us each chose 2 boats and then we rated them using our fool-proof BoatFools Scorecard to determine the winner. No price limit, no length limit, no limits whatsoever. It was interesting to see our three different perspectives at work and, being Christmas and all, it was fun to dream and to put these on our wish list. We can't afford any of these, but it sure was fun to look at them and wonder...
Next week - for our New Year's edition, we're headed to New York State and our guest host will be joining us from the Big Apple to help us find the coolest boats for sale in his state. Should be fun!
Happy holidays to all!
Here are the boats that appeared in the video:

I did get my first boat this year, yes yacht, for, wait for it, $400 Aussie dollars. Still working on getting it sailing, but it is floating.

The Lyman Morse 52 i a beautiful boat. I remember seeing it when it was new. Although it says the boat is in Southwest Harbor, I have not seen it on the water for many years. I suspect it is in a Hinckley shed. I like this boat a lot except for one thing. It may not look like it in the pictures, but from the dock this is a very big, slab sided boat and you need a ladder or steps to board it from the dock. The only other negative I have about this boat is that the interior is so nice that I would worry about scratching the perfect varnish. On the plus side the Leisure Furl boom and the electric winches make the boat easy to sail single or double handed. Very nice boat and actually a good value for the money.

I love the older boats with their long overhangs in the bow and stern. I got to see J-Class Endeavor when I was in San Diego for the America's Cup in 1998??. My memory fails me, but Black Magic won the cup. As for my pick in this contest, I have to go with the Bermuda 40. Another Bill Tripp design which I love is the Columbia 50.

Those J-Class Cup boats are showstoppers. So beautiful. The Bermuda 40 is a sweet boat, no doubt about it! I’ll check out the Columbia 50!

An incredible selection of beautiful boats, mainly for seasonal gentlemen sailors with deep maintenance pockets for whom the boat is an accoutrement rather than a life platform. For someone who actually wants to cruise, the Norseman hands down. It is a fast boat, well designed and built. It needs some cruising upgrades but can be sailed easily short handed.

I also feel the same way that Josh does about centerboards. They introduce a moving part under the waterline that I don't feel comfortable with.

It’s definitely a love or hate issue for folks. Despite our selections in this fantasy edition, I’m with you and Josh. Our keel is encapsulated which, IMO, is the way to go….

Those were definitely some really nice boats. I was surprised that the Norseman didn't make it into anyone's top three though ... the below on that boat really appeared to be roomy and airy. Another great episode!

Your reviews are informative. Have you considered a west Coast version of best boats under $30k? Also, a show on sailboat data explained would be great. I learn more each episode, but a data-dedicated episode would be great. Thank you!

Hi Bert! In two weeks we’re releasing a video on the top boats in SoCal under $35k, followed by Northern California (so, this coming Sat is New Work, the following weekend will be SoCal). We have family in Carpinteria. Some great boats out there! Also, yes, I will do a show on the sailboat data. I’ve been meaning to, just need to find the time! Really appreciate your feedback! Thanks for watching.

Of all the boats you guys picked the B40 is my choice. It is a beautiful boat that is in pristine condition. Plus it has one feature that none of the other boats have - the bulkhead mounted custom half model built by Todd Dunn Microyachts of Bass Harbor, Maine.
@boatfools

@@boatfools No, I retired from modelling in 2016 after a cancer diagnosis because I didn't know if I would be around to complete orders. I had about a 1 year backlog at the time.

The Concordia Yawl is a very nice boat, but I like the interior on the other Concordia 40 that is for sale. The only negatives about those boats is that they are wood and are planked with mahogany (hard to find and expensive). Having owned a wooden boat for 15 years, I can assure your that such boats need continuous maintenance to keep them in good shape. At the very least they will need to have the entire boat gone over every year to locate all deteriorated wood and then that wood must be replaced. The boat will need new exterior paint every year to keep it looking good. If you don't have the skills to do the wood work, it will cost a lot of money every year. Concordia are beautiful boats that have quite a following, but they cost a good deal to keep them in top shape. Consequently, having gotten old wooden boats out of my system, I would never consider another one. I will continue to enjoy looking at other peoples wooden boats though.

@@boatfools there’s a 1974 Swan 44 in Newport RI right now for 75 thousand that is my absolute dreamboat. For sale through Bethon, and another my favorites is a 1980 371 Swan in Marina Del ray for 65 thousand . Id kill to have a Swan. I love their craftsmanship.

Nice boats. Good to see a money is no object grouping for a change, although except for the Lyman Morse 52, all of the boats were on the cheap side. I like the Hinckley 48 from the outside. It is basically a Bermuda 40 on steroids. However once on board there is a lot not to like. I am not a fan of how the companionway is set up. It is awkward to go below. I also don't care much for the interior layout. The H-48 is a small 48 footer that has a racing oriented layout. The boat was clearly refit for offshore racing back in 2006, but a lot of stuff dates to then. The sails are a big item that likely need updating since the listing says the newest sails are from 2006. 2006 sails on a boat used for racing definitely need upgrading unless the boat spent a lot of the lat 18 years in the shed. I know it didn't since I have seen it hanging on a Hinckley mooring for the last few years. The standing and running rigging also appear to be old (93 for standing rigging and early 2000s for running), so that will need to be replaced. The boat will also needs to have at least three winches replaced. I am talking about the Barient 35 secondaries and the Barient 22 main sheet winch since those are not selftailing. Personally I would jut buy all new Andersens with electric primaries. The electronic are also 2006 vintage, so the boat could use all new electronics. Also, although the picture don't show it well, it looks like the on deck teak is due for wooding and revarnishing from bare wood. Overall, the $145K price i misleading since in my opinion the boat will need about $50K-$60K spent on it to bring it up to standards for serious sailing. Frankly the H-48 offered for $125K down in Eliot is a much nicer boat with more modern system except the engine which has a lot of hours. However, even if you included repowering the cost to have a boat ready to sail anywhere would still be considerably less than the boat you picked.

A little late to this party but I think that Red Green is looking for his shirt that Canadian Ken is wearing. I may be wrong but I don't think so. What is it with you boat folks and Red Green? First Captain stole his suspenders and now Canadian Ken has is shirt. It must be a conspiracy or they they auction off the set from the Red Green show? Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Really ? Center board ,hung rudder, comfortable ok ,Lotta flash , but true class ? There is only one vessel the rest are wishful wannabes. Yes the Concordia 40 , historical pedigree she's proven her self time and time again at 64 years young ,the rest should be so lucky even to sail in her shadow. We all can't be on the same page as sometimes. You have a good holiday . Angus
