Boating Basics - Boat Shifters and Throttles

I get a surprisingly large number of folks asking me why we have/what are the four shifters on the boat? So here's an overview of how our twin engine setup is equipped with two shifters - one for each engine - and two throttles - again, one for each engine.
Given the fact that the power plants are matted to vee-drive (inboard) setup, it makes steering in close quarters and general maneuvering a breeze. Handling this boat is an absolute pleasure and a huge stress reducer when docking or going through the locks.

Great instructional video for those who aren't familiar with the separate shifter/throttle set up. I also think that the big lesson one can take from this one is patience. Too many times I see people trying to dock (or leave) using way too much throttle. Idle speed it is. What's the saying? "Don't go any faster than you're willing to hit something!" Thanks for sharing Paul.

Awesome! You'll love the ease of docking with a twin inboard powered vessel. As I always tell everyone, it's not my skill that makes it look easy, it's how well the boat responds to the commands of the helm. Makes our extensive cruising very pleasurable.

Glad to have helped. If you peruse more of my videos, I believe you can find me giving more insights on driving with shifters. And *spoiler alert* I've got a new, upcoming video with a close up look at shifting while going through the locks of our lovely Trent Severn Waterway. Stay tuned for more.

Good job explaining this I had a 2005 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer with the same set up. I loved the system and control that it gave me.

thank you very much for creating this video - about to purchase my first boat, a 320 sundancer, and was curious at what position the throttles would need to be in while maneuvering. looks like most of the time they were in idle to move around as needed through the marina and especially in and out of the slip.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 5 месяцев назад
Yes, the throttles are generally set to idle speed, but extra thrust can be applied to overcome wind, or to help with maneuvering. I have lots of videos of us approaching docks or going through the locks, so you might be able to come with more insights. I hope to make another video on this subject, as it's brought me many questions over the years. Congrats on your 320 Sundancer! You're gonna love it.

When initially pulling away from the dock and you're only using the Trans shifters r u at idle or minimal throttle.

Thanks for the helpful video! Do you have bow thrusters? I'm new to boating and was wondering if so how you would add these to your approach to maneuvering the boat.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 3 года назад
No thrusters. That would be cheating. . .

I have always wanted to know how that works. Such a good video. My question is are the shifters related to the engines or the rudders. Also, if they are changing the gears in the engine, back and forth, does that damage them over time?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 9 месяцев назад
The shifters only change gears in the transmission(s) - forward, neutral and reverse - same as a car. The rudders are controlled by the steering wheel. The engines wouldn't be harmed by shifting, as the wear, if any, would be on the transmissions.

What was so hard to understand about it? Left set of sticks shifts between F-N-R, right set is the throttle.
@crazy4dariver
@crazy4dariver Год назад
Are shifters and throttles ALWAYS port and starboard? I have seen MY twin's where they are opposite and red knob vs black knob. Thankfully I played with detents with engines off. At least on that cluster F, absolute center was neutral as it clicked. The throttles kinda had detents but 4 stages of click and still able to roll on and off.
@crazy4dariver
@crazy4dariver Год назад
One MY twin, ALL colored knobs were Purple!. I guess Lakers fans. I guess as an expert you would suggest to try detents and then fire her up? I disregard colored knobs and tried to find detents (clicks in stages)
@rickgoldberg2392
@rickgoldberg2392 2 года назад
Ok, dumb question, but could you not do the exact same thing with integrated throttle and shift levers, or would they give you too much throttle by the time they engaged into forward or reverse?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 года назад
Potentially yes. And that type of set-up is what one would generally have on an inboard/outboard powered boat, which doesn't provide the same type of shifting characteristics. Inboard (or vee drives) have the props placed farther forward, providing better pivot control when shifting in slow speed manoeuvres.
@someguy6978
@someguy6978 Год назад
@BoatingWithBoogaboo I gotcha.... I'm accustomed to running crew boats and tow boats and was unfamiliar with this concept but once you explained the placement, it all came together. Thanks!
@andrewtschramm
@andrewtschramm 3 года назад
Are the shifters always on the left side and throttle on right or does it depend on the boat?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 3 года назад
Pretty much all the same. I'm sure there was a manufacturer that swapped them around, but I've never seen it. Shifters on the left side of the helm so that one can face aft-ward when backing into a dock, as they would be more easy to reach if standing up and doing that maneuver. Look for videos of the big fishing boats coming in to see what I'm referring to . . .

Hatts and a few other brands are reversed, but this is by far the most common set up. You will also see 4 levers all together (or even separated on some sport fish models especially), with the transmissions as the outside levers and the throttles the inside levers. In most cases, the ends of the levers are designated by color, black for the transmissions, red for the throttles. There are also electronic controls (mainly newer boats), where you would only see two levers total, you move forward or aft until the click to engage the transmission in that direction, any further advancement adds throttle.
@HTown99
@HTown99 2 года назад
Will the boat let you shift in/out of gear when the throttles are anywhere besides idle? Thanks
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 года назад
Yes, but one should never do that. Shifting gears at anything above idle speed can result in damage to the transmission.
@HTown99
@HTown99 2 года назад
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Cool, thanks for the response. I've only ever used integrated throttle/shifter sticks. I suppose even with the single stick, you could push the neutral button and rev the engine up high and then quickly move the throttle to idle and then shift into gear - before the revs would have been able to settle down to idle, and thus do the same type of damage. Keep up the great work on the awesome videos!

Funny story; Good friends of ours, who have boated for 30+ years, bought their first inboard powered boat last fall. The captain, after being used to the same throttle/shift setup you mention mistakenly pinned the throttles when he thought he was simply shifting into forward. Kinda scary in the moment (8.1 big blocks are really loud at wide open throttle with no load), but we chuckled about it afterwards 😂
