It’s our hell week - I plan to live on the boat, our 2006 341 Meridian to clean, scrape, sand and paint the bottom with fresh antifouling paint this week. But we find a costly surprise along the way.
Follow along as we use top quality primer and paint to hopefully eliminate our barnacle troubles.
Products:
Interlux Micron Extra SPC ablative anti fouling paint for our hull
Interlux Primocon underwater metal primer paint
Interlux Trilux 33 underwater metal antifouling paint

100% concur on different paint. Lines that sharp make it fairly clear. My friends give me grief about still doing physical labor like you're doing now, but at least you know it's done right.

It gets more barnacles on the sides because the sun hits there, like a plant. No sun on the very bottom

I got more sun on the side that had less barnacle. The real bad side is actually the side against the dock, and gets very little sun. But the district lines fire/aft are a telltale of different paints.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Low quality paint. I also see where previous paint roller marks stopped. Something also I was going to say, we have been looking for a home in your area, and has been brought up many times, from friends that live on canals, in that area, that the canals that are dead ends, have more stagnant water (promoting growth), than dead end canals with culvert pipe outlets, allowing better flow. From Michigan, pretty much same thing here. But lucky enough to have my boat on a hoist. Your work looks awesome !!!
@AdventuresofHappyOurs

I’m one house away from the end of my canal and water quality is usually pretty good. Not stagnant. We have tides that flush them out daily. Occasionally some algae but it clears pretty quick.

I've tried about every sanding tool known to man in an attempt to increase production and save time. A four inch grinder with the arbor adapter using 36 grit pads is the best bang for the buck that I've found. It's simple ,cheap and effective. The smaller grinder is easier on old shoulders too.

I used my grinder with 80 grit flap wheel and it was too aggressive. I used a paint remover wheel that was much better on a t but wore away quickly. Next time I’ll buy lots of them.

Tom, just doing the same thing here in Jacksonville, so I feel your pain. I’m on day 4 as well and just finished painting our 34 Trojan. Just a note about your propellers, they normally loosen when they haven’t been “lapped in” during install. Not sure about the history, but anytime a shaft or prop is changed, you have to lap fit the prop otherwise it will ride up the shaft or worse, vibrate. So, if you have any doubts, you may want to look into it next time. Great job by the way! I too am a DIYer, but those type marinas are getting hard to come by. Scott

FWIW Workmanship, quality materials, and oversight… I have a good, trustworthy Marina in Tampa/Tarpon Sprgs area do my bottom. You had a different situation down there post-Ian. My suggestion for next time is to consider having someone do the growth removal and blasting/sanding (serious hard work) then you can apply your own purchased paint knowing it is done right.

Man! You’ve got your work cut out for you. A couple things, yes I agree you got shafted on the last bottom job. I bet it was leftover paint they used after they ran out of the gallon someone expected to coat the whole bottom. This is precisely why when I can’t do the work myself, I sit and observe. Sorry, not sorry but I’ve seen it far too many times to let it go. Second, the grey color is most likely barrier coat underneath the paint. Now I’m not too sure about recoating but when barrier coat is applied, the first coat of new bottom paint must be applied while the last barrier coat is still tacky. It’s a process but done correctly you’ll have great results in both bottom paint adhesion and prevention of osmosis resulting in blisters. Don’t sand through the barrier coat! Third, while the Gypsy Dawn is on the hard I had her blasted with fineglass just yesterday! It ran me $50/foot and took them just a few hours. Just like that, 24 years and around 300 lbs of old bottom paint was stripped away. Now the hull, running gear and any other underwater pieces are stripped down to original and ready to be barrier coated and painted. The result is a factory smooth bottom surface (used to be like the surface of the moon!). Most people I know having done this have gained around 4 kts on top end and substantial fuel savings. While I’m not looking for top end if I can do a higher speed at my cruising RPM, I’ll be pretty happy. As far as your prop being loose, I’ll spare you the headache of finding the correct torque…..there is none. The procedure for reinstalling the prop is the key. Also I’ve heard people using 4200 on the threads of the large nut to prevent any movement. I however am not going to do that when I reinstall mine.
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 2 месяца назад
That’s a very reasonable soda blast price. Around here prices are ridiculous. My prop guy said don’t put anything on prop nuts. Half torque small nut, full torque large nut, cotter pin and your done. The opposing force on the threads of the half torqued nut locks it in place.
@jamesranker6275
@jamesranker6275 2 месяца назад
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs I agree, I put nothing in the prop nut. What I do though is after setting the prop I tighten it down with the large nut and a washer. Once it’s tight, I remove the large, replace it with the jamb nut and reinstall the big nut tightening until it just starts to turn the jamb nut. Cotter pin and that’s it. Also, that price was for JUST blasting not the barrier coat or paint. That is a job the yard won’t let go to anyone else but even so I think I was quoted 75/foot by the blaster for the full job.
@jetlag4754
@jetlag4754 2 месяца назад
Do you have barrier coat on your boat? If so, I was thinking it would have almost been easier to soda blast the bottom.
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 2 месяца назад
I’m assuming we have a barrier coat. Too expensive to soda blast for me at this point. Not much paint layered on to warrant it yet.

It's too late now, but Trilux 33/Primocon is for aluminum underwater metals, like outdrives, lower units and the like. I know it can be used for other metals and its a long lasting (almost hard ablative) but is it the best choice for running gear ?? Have you had success with it in the past ? I just painted my Freedom Lift with it for this season but its not "spinning" and when on plane, has very little water flow to ablate the growth and its copper free Just a question ??
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 2 месяца назад
The point with trilux is it doesn’t have copper in it so no dissimilar metals corrosion. My hope is the primer helps it adhere better to the metal. When I used regular ablative on the metals they always looked horrible. So this can be considered a test. Should be better. We’ll see!
