Celebrating 50 years of Bob and Marcia's Joyous reggae version of Nina Simone’s ‘To Be Young, Gifted And Black'. This recording, released on Trojan Records, peaked in the UK Chart at No.4 on April 4th 1970.
To mark the occasion, Trojan Records launched a brand new website - www.younggiftedandblack2020.com, where we invited the general public to submit photos and video clips showcasing stories and examples of black excellence. The submissions to the website now make up this bright and uplifting lyric video which re-imagines the positive message of the song for the modern day audience, breathing fresh air into the inspiring lyrics which are just as powerful now as they were 50 years ago.
(TO BE) YOUNG GIFTED & BLACK (LYRICS)
Written by Weldon Irvin & Nina Simone
Published by Sony/ATV Music Publishing
Young, gifted and black!
Oh what a lovely precious dream
To be young, gifted and black,
Open your heart to what I mean
In the whole world you know
There’s a million boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black
And that's a fact!
Young, gifted and black!
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
Yours is the quest that's just begun
When you feeling real low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
To be young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact!
Oh, young, young, gifted and black!
How I long to know the truth
There were times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth
Ah, but my joy of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at!
Young, gifted and black!
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
Yours is the quest that's just begun
When you feeling real low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
When you are young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact!
Oh, young, young, gifted and black!
Oh, ow I long to know the truth
There were times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth
Ah, but my joys of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!

Mine was Dandy Livingstone as he was a great writer and singer. Next was the late Nicky Thomas ... What a great voice from him and he did Trojan Records proud.

When I was a schoolboy, early '70s, I remember hearing this for the first time while I was travelling on a bus! (UK). Someone playing a transistor radio. I immediately loved it. Many white kids of my era also loved this. In fact, black musicians on Top of the Pops, were also revered.

Young, Gifted and Black. Does it describe me? Black? Nope, I'm a white fella. Gifted? Er, I do have certain talents...nothing special mind. Young? Well, when this wonderful song was riding high in the U.K. charts in 1970, I was a mere ten years old, so I was able to lay claim for the 'young' bit at least. Sadly, no longer. I love the strings in this reggae tune and it's firmly lodged in the top ten of my favourite songs of all time, alongside Simon and Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' the Beatle's 'She Loves You,' Squeeze's 'Take Me I'm Yours,' Gerry Rafferty's 'Right Down The Line' and Yes's 'Wonderous Stories' among others. This piece of pop perfection will be in my heart right up to when I shuffle off this mortal coil (many, many years from now). Superbly put together video, by the way.

Haunted by my youth, this song is definitely a haunting blast from my youth, never really looked into the meaning back then as a white boy I just loved the sound of Soul , Motown & Reggae, and of course Bob Marley, Bowie, Beatles, and then the glam rock era came along TRex Sweet, Roxy Music, seems like music has become a money making manufactured sound

nothing 'official ' about this in any way, shape or form; but still a fantastic record. can't find an early version of it, I remember it was a minor hit in the UK at the time, I remember it on the TV; any pointers please? I love Marcia Griffiths, and I still 'feel like jumping.'

You should get actual facts before you ask such a stupid ass question The song was written and sung by Nina Simone in tribute to Lorraine Hansberry a playwright who died of brain cancer in 1965
