#younggiftedblack #ninasimone "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" performed by @NinaSimoneMusic (includes interview) Recording session: Live at @MorehouseCollege in Atlanta, June 1969
At any age, we that are black are still feeling young, gifted and proud to be BLACK! My mom is 80 and she’ll tell you all day: “I am young, gifted and Black” Amen 🙏🏽 To be young, gifted and black in 2021 is where it’s AT!!!! Hold on!!! 😘
In what way was she ahead of her time exactly? If anything she was entirely OF her time, given she was singing about those very times. Or is it just something to say?
I'm raising my daughter with the same moto..."She's Young, Gifted and Black. ...let's be conscious about this. Being Pro Black doesn't make you Anti White✊
Until Barack hijacked Trayvon to get him some legacy crumbs for his failed presidency, I would have agreed with you. Since he pulled that racist, pandering bullshit in 2013, we've seen this gigantic fissure within Black-America which must be healed by Black America. If you know why Kamala and Cory's races this cycle both failed and were revoltingly racist at their cores, then you'll understand this. If not, read this by me: www.watchdogwag.com/2019/12/07/everything-about-kamala-harris-was-vulgar/
Early 1970 I heard this song and became aware of my identity as a young black African and Nigerian. It formed the bedrock of my being aware of who I was and the need of harnessing my talents positively. With utmost nostalgia I remember how I was affected. Tnx Nina Simone. Am gratefully yours.❤🎉😊
I am young gifted and black. This is an anthem to the roots of a black soul and to mankind. So glad i randomly came across Nina Simone so ironic bc I look at today and every black soul needs to be encouraged and reminded. Life is a gift.
I used to play this bout everyday when my children were little. Second woman I know to be proudly natural & happily so🌅⌛🔥🌫🌬☄, after my beautiful & brave big sis!
Yes shes a good singer, and it's great to be young African american and talented or american Nicaraguan and talented or a english american and talented and american mexican and talented and for all to be unapologetic about what nationality they are, basically, it's great to have a good talent no matter who you are and that's the way it should be and great but not the whole country sees it that way, they see it in an unforgiving devided manner with no forgiveness of anyone who has done them wrong because of whatever reason. Wish we were more like england or Australia. in that aspect..
@@christhacker7957 When you as a people have lived through 400 years of slavery, jim Crow, segregation, and just being treated inhumanely, that song touches the very root of your being. It reinforced the idea that God gave us something that White America has tried (unsuccessfully) to take away. But Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Gil Scot-Heron, the Last Poets, Langston Hughes, Lorraine Hansberry, and many, many, others, encouraged us by letting us know who we are, and mostly, how gifted we are, and to embrace our Blackness and not to be ashamed of it.
I love her for that. Our culture is awesome. It hurts me We don’t embrace it. We’re so powerful talented the world watches what black people do then follow us. I love being black despite what we face on a daily basis 🇯🇲
When you're real you always stand out no mask gonna ever fall off, cause you're a fake, be you, do you most of all love you , then you can love o the hers with real love.
This song got me through my masters degree when things were really bad…and I said to myself Nana you are young gifted and f-- black get up and write that dissertation!! ❤😊thank you Nina 🙌
It is because of her and this song that I love and identify as Black and not AA, I’m Young, Gifted, Black. Black is Beautiful, Black is Intelligent, Black is Powerful, Black is The Culture, Black is Strong, I Am Black...
I went to the new African-American museum in DC and they have a handwritten letter of hers in the music section. It felt so awesome to see something that she actually touched with her own hands. I love her.
I wanna say something. Young ladies make your young black kids pay attention to this Singer, Ms Nena Simon. Education about our history to the max. OMG am here crying to see the level of brain wash we have gotten from this society. Amen father u open my eyes tonight. Jesus was in fact a black man. We are brain wash. Am gonna gonna convert to African clothing.
I had a teacher who played this song everyday during Black History Month when I was in grammar school. I didn't understand or appreciate this song until I was much older. What a strong message.
My generation was fortunate to grow up listening to songs like this. Listen to We’re A Winner by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions and of course James Brown I’m Black and I’m Proud.
how is this possible , a woman of this kind of powerful beauty and amazing skill can be never heard of until today.and only because alicia keys was talking about her , so i decided to look this lady up , anyway now i know who and wow this lady is nina simone ,,,and how she owns that stage ,,,
I've been watching this video randomly for the past 3 years (I'm at least 40 of these views). The thing that really puts the icing on her performance is the photographer panning the audience of all of the "young, gifted, and black" folks applauding her!!! It's a BEAUTIFUL thing!!! Thank God for Miss Nina Simone!❤❤❤
I just got done listening to Nina Simone singing Mississippi Goddam. It's funny, that the protests of 2020, got a retired white guy to see this song for the first time. But I am blessed to have heard it.
Nina Simone's first protest song Martin Luther King had nothing on Nina go girl I miss you I'm 18 years old you're gone and Cambodia and Vietnam I listen to your music everyday you are a wonderful person I wish you could come back and Live Another Life
I'm about to write the MCAT to get into medical school and this song has been my motivation when I begin to second guess my abilities. Thank you Nina for reminding me and my brothas and sistahs we can do it all!
+nzinga zindua This clip sends chills down my spine. It makes me feel good with hope. Your comment was the first i saw. Yes agree. She was a gift. Bold lioness that went for the jugular to protect her kind. The spirits of Sista Nina and brother Malcolm X still exists till this day.
This makes me so proud to be black! Raw, black, strong, and beautiful! Nina's awareness and pride of black identity transcended around the world. Whether you're a Black American, Black Latino, Black Eurpoean, etc., you FEEL it! I know I do.
Damn! Nina looks mad regal and beautiful up there on that stage rocking the hell out of that Afro! I often debate with my friends over which is the best version is the best. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franlin- as well as their awesome soulful renditions of this song. However, I think Nina's original version is more Ethereal than the other versions. Aretha and Donny took this song to Church, no doubt. But Nina took this song to the Heavens.Much Respect!!!!
I’ve believed so too, I’m in college and this just motivates me to do the best I can in college and in life. This song is so rich and it’s just more than a song. You can see the hope in everyone eyes in the audience ✊🏾✊🏾.
My GOD so much to say , simply put compare that time frame to this one . If that doesn’t do it for you, watch the video again & make the almost unable comparison from that time to this . WE GOT HERE ON THEIR B. A. C. K. S. !!!!!!!!!!!! ( One picture is worth 1,000 WORDS )
“Everything that happened to me as a child involved music. It was part of everyday life, as automatic as breathing.” “I demand perfection in what I do, and I practice very hard before I give a concert-sometimes three to six hours a day.” 1:56 Nina Simone
I'm at work, needing much inspiration. Listening to Nina take me to church, in tears yet smiling. HOLD ON!!! HOLD ON!! You cannot make up this. Thank you Nina. I'm so proud of be of Kings and Queens.
Nina was the ultimate protest singer ...composer...pianist....she went through her own hell on earth....and wants to change it .....can you imagine how bad it was then ....beneath the surface it has not changed that much....the law has changed more than most people have.
Nina Simone had such a strong drive from her heart to pass to the children of the future. She was the singing to the children of the future. Don't waste time in your lives!!!
Nina sang, "Mississippi God Damn !! " in Montgomery at the conclusion of the March On Montgomery, at Saint Jude's. My first concert ever. Best ever. What a wake up ! Wow !
Took a moment to listen To be Young Gifted and Black and my soul is satisfied..Nina Simone thank you for reminding me about the work we have to do.Sankofa!
Thank you Ms Brown...my beautiful fourth grade teacher from Burney Elementary School..she made it her duty to educate us on as much black history as post and taught us this song. Love her..miss her and hope she is doing well❤️
If only our children could understand the meaning of being young gifted and black. We have lost so many of our children to jails, drugs, ect. If only we can get them to see the way it should be though music this song would be the eye-opener. I LOVE YOU NINA SIMONE AND THANK YOU FOR BEING SO STRONG WHEN OUR PEOPLE NEEDED YOU.
I’m a 50-something white lady and I came to you tube for some Nina’s Kick in the pants inspiration. We need more ladies like her! Her message is always so real and so encouraging. 💕❤️❤️
This is a great moment in Black History, I'm sure every one of those students felt good about himself (herself) that day. My favorite Nina Simone song, so happy that it was shared on You Tube.
What I love about Nina is that she was a real artist, singing with all her emotions and originality. Also I love her attitude when some impolite person what trying to leave while she's singing, hahaha. love it
Impolite?!? She was not the damn Queen... if you are leaving a concert without making noise and interrupting the singer, you haven't done anything wrong. She was extremelly disrespectful sometimes...
Who in their right mind would leave a Nina Simone gig? She was literally one of the most talented musicians, songwriters, vocalists that we ever had the joy to experience
"You never know when inspiration will hit you". Nina Simone said these very words and they still hold as true today as the day she spoke them. Her music, her words, her spirit will forever capture the struggle, always pushing forward, always overcoming. Rest in Heavenly Peace, Queen Nina Simone!
I think the coolest thing about this performance wasn't even the song itself, although that was wonderful too. It was seeing the beaming audience at the end so genuinely moved. Could see how much it meant to them, which is really beautiful.
I love this... I remember my Mother and Brothers played this song so much in the 70's when I was a little girl and this song filled my Spirit with Joy and Happiness. Thank you Nina! Thank you for putting this live performance and interview together, giving the background on the writing of this beautiful song.
I wish she had lived to see the world today and how the world is a bit kinder to black people plus a black president of the United States , I’m from England I’m 62 , and I’m proud of what this lady stood for
How I love Nina !!!! There has been no one like this beautiful soul since her passing . She wouldn't let anyone label her . God give her peace as she rest in your arm !! 💕🙏🏾
Do not expect knowledge to come to you, or to be given to you by other people than your folks. You've got to look for it by yourself. I was born and raised in Africa, yet by the age 15, I knew who she was and I knew her work. Curiosity, haunting disc stores ans scavenging for any record by black artist, in search of every message from my people across the world.
There had never been, nor will there be, any talent as mercurial as Nina Simone. I first saw her perform atThe Barbican Theatre in London in the early 1980s. I went because a review said that seeing her perform live was as revolutionary and original as seeing The Sex Pistols in 1975, when they first started. Never having seen The Pistols, I thought I'd go, and I was totally blown away by everything about her. She was rude to the audience--it was as though she didn't care if they were there or not--and spent as much time talking as she did playing and singing. But I'd never seen or heard anyone like her, and she was phenomenal. After that, I saw her in jazz clubs in New York and Los Angeles, and at the Royal Festival Hall in London a few years before she died.
TO BE YOUNG GIFTD AND BLACK AYYYYEEE (I FELT THAT AYYYYE IN MY SOUL) IS WHERE IT'S AT!!!! ITS ALWAYS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE WHERE ITS AT!!!! I TOO AM YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK!!! SALUTE QUEEN NINA SIMONE!
