I made my living playing music for 2 decades. I've known hundreds of musicians in my time. I've played with prima donnas, the most humble, and everything in between. Let me tell you: Most musicians never really grow up. Something about this life, the lifestyle, the attitude...all of it. But many, many musicians remain children their entire lives. Bob Burns is not one of those. Mr. Burns grew up. If a fraction of his humility and good spirit were shared with the world it would be oh-so-much a better place. RIP Mr. Bob Burns. You left a grand legacy for us.
It's obvious my friend. The listening public has long figured out hearing about the silly old band politic arguments carried on by older guys that musicians never grow up.
I met Bob a couple years before he passed in a doctors office. I gathered up enough nerve to approach him. To my surprise he was so kind to me. We talked for about 25 minutes. He talked like we had known each other for years. I will always appreciate how kind and friendly he was to me.
I played piano with Bob for several years up till his death. He was always smiling and upbeat, loved what I brought to his band, and never hesitated to say kind things to us all. Bob was very cool and laid back, often telling us stories about the good old days with L.S. But he was bigger than life when he sat on his drum throne, like he had a majestic aura about him. I spent an all nighter with him at Eddie Grey's house (former drummer for Travis Tritt) and recall us going to Walmart at 4:00 a.m. because Eddie had to have a new TV. I guess you had to be there, but it was pretty crazy. Before joining his project band, Bob often sat in on drums with various local bands I was in since I was 20 years old. I'm 53 now, and think about Bob often. I really do miss him.
GlennJiles That was great to hear. The man was great to hang out with. His left field sense of humor was hilarious and if I didn't get the joke he'd look at me and then give a really big smile and then it would hit you, cause his thinking was so much faster and higher up than ours. I miss that a lot from him. Glenn I too had a few nights where he'd say 'Alright everybody in the SUV we're gonna go do something'. Wow sure miss that instant surprise at any moment. Hell one night he said OK we're all going to stay at the beach at the hotel get in the SUV . I'm LMAO right now 😂. He was so cool that you could scream from the livinng room Hey you mfr what the hell you doing? ! Bob would holler back from the kitchen MFR I be making me a sandwich and pouring me a coke! Then he'd walk back in with 2 sandwiches and 2 cokes cause he was always thinking of other people. ..and that's just how damn cool Bob was.......
Did he tell you about throwing the cat out the window of a high rise hotel after seeing the devil in the cat's eyes. The Exorcist caused a lot of people to see devils and demons.
not dope people.......................hes bi-polar , and humble , peaceful , non judgmental , grateful and full of love..................straight up inspirational. thanx bob.
This man seemed like he was as genuine as they come. I could listen to him talk for hours. I know if I ever had the chance to meet and chat with him, those waste of time questions wouldn't ever come out of my mouth. What a sweet soul. We've lost a great number of magical musicians in the past few years, and it truly saddens me. Us 50+ year Olds were truly blessed to have rock n rolls greatest musicians in our lives playing music for us that will never be duplicated. I thank each and every one of them for touching our hearts and souls. Peace to all. ✌
This guys smarter than the rests of us . The way he was talking so certain about not finding the answers in this life . He's very very intelligent mabey not super educated but definitely intelligent.
Cool interview. Met Bob on the street in Breckenridge, CO right around 2000. He walked in my office and said "I'm Bob Burns of Lynyrd Skynyrd!" Had a few laughs and we walked over to the record store and he pointed out his photo on an album. I bought it and he asked if I wanted him to sign it. Real nice guy. Very animated and memorable!
Yep Scott sad to see some of these comments from people who never knew him. Bi-polar and ADHD is hard on folks but most of bad comments come from the idiots out there.
Tony Beazley Than you fine Sir for putting this video, up this was truly the tightest band that I know of, The old school Lynryd Skynryd is something captured in time through the music, we will never recapture what solid love in music is, this band was all of that, ahead of time, RIP Brother Bob
@@TonyBeazley it is very sad .. Bob burns was a very talented man.. And very intelligent... Bet they could never play a set of drums like him ... Rip Bob
I agree and I never liked the way Gary talked about BOB being crazy and some other words I won't mention he said, BOB was a gentle soul and easily intimidated by everyone according to those closes to him, I think and prey BOB has found his peace and it's sad he isn't with us and now maybe GARY can stop the hurtfuil remarks about BOB,
sonny freeman Hurtful remarks about Bob? Bob did go crazy in Europe - by Gary's and Ed's and Ronnie's and everyone's accounts. He snapped. Even Bob said it. Those remarks by Gary or Ed or anyone weren't said in hate or disrespect, they were said to explain what the hell happened with Bob and why they had no choice but to part ways with him. I mean he skinned a cat and threw it to its death from a hotel balcony among other things. He flat out lost his mind. Just a fact. And for the record I totally prefer Bob's drumming in Skynyrd to Artimus'. And I far prefer Bob as a person to Artimus who is a total fraud,
@Ivan. I think Bob must have been plagued by certain disorders that kept him from actualizing his full potential musically. And knowing this, he is such a gracious man about it. He has nothing bad at all to say about Artimus! How cool he is! He reflects Ronnie's spirit through his words. And he truly knows what its all about! What a great guy! I would have to wonder about the cat incident, he looks and appears too sensitive to have that type of cruelty in him. And as for Artie, Ronnie loved Artie also, so are you saying Ronnie hired a fraud? I think Ronnie was always very aware of what he was doing in regards to the band. So you are criticizing Ronnie's choice?
@@IvanLendl87 Artimus had an ex who purposely made up charges against him and he went completely broke trying to fight them. He ended up pleading no contest otherwise he would have been sent to prison. This way he lived to fight another day. His own child said nothing happened and it was a rotten thing her mom had done to him. As far as everything else he may have made some things sound better than they really were at times. But we’re all human and a available to grave discretion. When you confess your sins in life it’s not for anyone else except you and God. I can’t judge anyone else I’ll be judged. If I know for an absolute fact but until then I leave all the judgements up to the Lord.
I hope all the members alive then were able to not only hear this interview but listen to it.many many assholes helped stir the pot with their messed up interviews, this guys interview was very respectful much like a 1950s interview of total respect.wish the world could respect one another like back then.R.I.P. RESPECTFULLY.NOBODY SHOULD DISRESPECT THIS MAN.
R.I.P Bob. He lived in the same town as my younger brother. I was unaware until after the accident that took his life. What a loss. Great VID Mr Beazley THANKS.......
A kind and gentle soul, I played piano for him for several years before his death. We were at the cusp of playing venues again just before his untimely passing. Our rehearsal tape was in the player of his car at the time of his accident. On our rehearsal breaks, he'd tell us stories from the old days. He was a fantastic story teller too, always had us laughing. I sure do miss him.
Artimus loved Bob Burns. Always gives him credit due and more for his work with LS and for literally teaching him his drum parts. He had Bob on stage playing drums with him on a R&R cruise. Bob still had it too.
One of the best Skynyrd interviews. Thank you Bob for loving the boys and not taking the bait of gossip. My heart was going out to you while you were fighting with your anxiety, but I know today you have total peace sitting at the feet of Jesus.
Awesome interview. Bob contributed a huge amount of himself to make a forever lasting legacy with Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was a very nice and very humble man. R.I.P Bob.
Loved how he said " I'm doing the best i can hope understand, to much information will ruin my conctration" lol just his facial expression! R.I.P fly on proud bird your free at last
“I don’t harbor any resentment towards anybody. In the band or otherwise from the past “. ( paraphrased) I guess if we can all get to that point, we’re good.
Bob is right we as fans can never really understand what Lynyrd Skynyrd went though. When all the people in the band can't figure out. I've loved Lynyrd Skynyrd since they started and I still love Lynyrd Skynyrd. To me the most special, the most talented band there ever was.
There is alot more to Bob than most people would think. Yes he was there from the beginning, he was a special part of their path. And thank God, i think Bob knew this.
Bob was a kind and very humble man. I used to know him in the 80s before I moved to the west coast. When I first met him, I didn't know who he was. I dated a different Bob Burns in highschool who would tell everyone that he played drums for LS. So, when I met This Bob Burns, I thought to myself 'Huh?? How odd that I know of 3 Bob Burns.' I think I mumbled to him that I knew of two other Bob Burns. The first time I ever walked into his living room, I saw all of the gold and platinum albums on his wall. Then I said, "OH!! You are THAT Bob Burns." I just happened to be visiting GA when he passed away. Sweet Soul, RIP.
Went by Bob Burns house 06/15/2017 , they( the band) would practice sometimes in the front Bobs house , till the neighbors complained. God Bless you Bob , I know you were going thru a lot at times. Those demons are gone, your a Free Bird Brother , FLY HIGH you were a awesome person whose was genuine . God Bless you for your contributions, I sure enjoyed them. JC
Agree with Bob in the fact that Billy Powell was the greatest piano player. All those guys really brought something legendary to the music world. Thanks for the interview.
I should have mentioned this in the above, but Bob was also incredibly funny and sharp of whit. You guys should check out his interviews in the "If I Leave Here Tomorrow" documentary. A great story teller with an enduring sense of humor.
Wow, very well said Bob,you will always be a very important part of Lynyrd Skynyrd an very much missed. I hope you found all the answers you were looking for..
Met Bob a few times. He was living in an apartment on austell rd in marietta,ga around 79,80, i think. He was giving drum lessons. Had a poster in the little convenience store accross the street that said.... Bob Burns. Original drummer for LS. And then went on to describe the drum lessons. I liked him very much. Nice guy and very good drummer.
Great attitudes.. Skynyrd fans need to just chill and enjoy any & all Skynyrd music out there. this is the best Southern Rock Band on Earth. it's band members and singers and those who keep this music alive are deserving of all compliments and credits to making us have this incredible music. Bob Burns what a insightful & cool man.
Seriously this guy knew his stuff... 5 minutes with him would never let you know who he was but spending at least a weekend with him would let ya know what he was thinking....we spent many a weekend with the wild Bob and his family over a couple of years.....he thought beyond all of us.... and then to jam with him was the ultimate thing ....Bob had some good stories to tell that he didn't wont recorded..... great stuff...miss you Bob and Marsha.... so down to earth.....loved ya'll ✌
Fleetwood Mac w/ Stevie Nicks is a bad assed band as well, both Skynyrd and Fleetwood Mac have songs that play over 11 minutes!! Both bands workhorse bands, you get your money's worth.
I feel such a strong spiritual connect to you guys Bob. It seems like many morings I have Skynyrd Tune playing in my head and Ill have to start singing one of my tunes to make it go away. You guys had a strong brotherly bond and yall had so much fun playing all those gigs and just lived music to the fullest. You inspire me to keep with it. I love you Bob, I wish I could been your friend!
I love Bob. The genuine honesty and sincerity of his Spirit transcends what he suffered for all their sins and shines through with love and compassion, when he would be justified to have some righteous indignation.
they are my favorite band in the world these southern boys brought a sound that will live on in the hearts of the common man forever just as the words of Freebird will you still remember me and the answer yes they brought music of a nation the south that is just like the voice Sam Elliot. the 3 guitar harmony and Ronnie a southern poet like no other as good as any in the world and what is probably the greatest thing about the songs was it showed the south as just some real good ole boys that loved living life and just having a good time and not once was racism apart of anything. These guys put a sound together that changed a country. GOD BLESS THEM ALL AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU GAVE US THE FANS
Bob Burns from the bottom of my heart and every other Southern rock fan thank you so very much for bringing the music and the story's of you all growing up it must have been an amazing time you're with Ronnie and Steve and Billy Leon and the rest of the band Rock on my friend may you RIP
wow its funny I was in high school when these guys were on top and I graduated in 77 and then it was over. I'll never forget that day....I played Lynyrd Skynyrd songs with many different bands my whole life...what a great time to be a kid.thanks for the videos
The day of the crash is indelibly imprinted in my minds' eye for eternity...in Va Beach it was sunny and comfortable, about 55 or 60 degrees. I woke up to go to work and the radio said the plane crashed and Ronnie, Steve and Cassie were gone - among others. I was in total shock. Got to work and got the newspaper of headline news were photos of Ronnie and the story as it was emerging in the hours after the crash...I was so effected, I left at lunch and went home and cried.
@ Lee Verrill- I graduated in 77 as well. Left for college in September, with my Lynyrd Skynyrd records, among others, in tow. I was pretty occupied and hadn't heard the news. My little sister cut an article out of the Tampa paper and mailed it to me. I was stunned.
Bob was a great guy and a good friend too. He passed away during a time when we were working up another band. He has sat in with bands I've played with for over 30 years. I sure do miss him! :(
he was right about Billy....and Billy could play that 'Barrel house' style like nobody else in rock....and Bob was great on the drums...just what the Dr. ordered....the rock n roll Dr. - -RIP Mr. Burns. wait, if I say 'Mr. Burns' it sounds like that old guy on the Simpsons....so- RIP Bob Burns- thanks for posting this series Tony-
I agree 100% with Bob Burns on Billy Powell; he was an absolute genius. I don’t think there has been a single time in 40+ years I have heard Billy’s solo on Freebird that I have not gotten choked up or cried a little. The music and lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd moves me every time I listen to them. It truly makes me sad to think how most of these guys are gone. Love to all and may the soul and songs of Lynyrd Skynyrd live forever.
Absolute words of wisdom. Wish I coulda known you, Bob. After watching this I feel like I do. I dig everything you said here. Rest In Peace. Your contributions will never die. Here’s to you, Bob. 🙏🏻🎵 🥁
Bless Bob regardless of his diagnosis. He has an amazing memory and very well spoken narrator...spirituality so important. Listen to the love dedication and single mindedness of his memory of the group mindset then. You hear that team spirit in him.
