The Band was Bob Dylan's band during his infamous 1966 world tour
@hannejeppesen1809

Your comment "looks like they are all communicating", is spot on. Before they became The Band, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, RIchard Manuel, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson was Dylan's back up band. They toured all over the world in 1966. Then the Band (4 of them were Canadian) moved to Woodstock New York. Dylan lived there, and there were quite close. When The Band went out on their own, they always communicating, looking at eachother, hand signals. etc.

The Band was such a tight unit, on their own, but Dylan melds with them. The results are outstanding.

"The Last Waltz", from beginning to end, one procession of artists performing classics. The added 'Tales of the Road' 'tween sessions is a perfect blend of rowdiness and melancholy. Did I say, "Turn it up!" ...definitely! If I may... Many Vets adopted 'Forever Young' as a tribute to the youth whose names appear on 'The Wall'. To those of us who knew them when ...Welcome Home Brothers.

Dylan, as he often loves to do, played a song that they didn't rehearse ... you can see the momentary confusion when he starts playing Baby Let Me Follow You Down, but they had played that song on tour with him hundreds of times... picked it right up. Dylan is famous for changing things up and fucking with the band. I could link you to videos of people talking about it if anybody cared.

That was indeed an intimate song about life to lift your soul and live your life and do good in your life, followed by a kick ass Rick song, just incredible how Dylan is unpredictable with the Band or any band behind him. Follows “ I Shall Be Released “ which was the last song of the Band and the movie “ The Last Waltz” : considered the best music/documentary ever. Thank you for posting Bob Dylan, the poet, the artist ❤

Yeah the whole show is top notch. Dylan is notoriously tough to play with, he’ll change something up without telling anyone. The Band had recorded and toured with him, so they were pretty keyed in on him. That was a reprise at the end, they played it a few songs earlier too.

The Band was Bob Dylan's road band. They lived in a big pink how that was near Dylan's and they practiced in the basement. When Dylan was injured in a motorcycle accident and spent a year recovering, they became "The Band" and released their first album "Music From Big Pink." They have known each other, and played together, for at least fifty years.
@dylanthompson8511
@dylanthompson8511 3 года назад
You forgot to mention "The Basement Tapes", one of Dylan's best "albums", and the catalyst for "The Hawks" to truly evolve into "The Band", as you can hear from their future albums, their new "sound" was all inspired from the music Dylan and them made in that legendary basement. While everyone else was recording big bombastic psychedelic albums, Dylan and the Band brought it all back home with a more laid back, rootsy sound, that inspired Clapton to go solo and the Beatles to make the "Let it Be" album.

The Band was together for 16 years, then Robbie Robertson the main songwriter and kind of the leader, called it quits, he was tired of touring. 4 member reunited in the early eighties. Richard Manuel committed suicide in 86, Rick Danko died of heart failure at 56 in 1999. Levon Helm died in 2012, and Robbie Robertson 2023, only Garth left.

Was this from The Last Waltz? If so, Last Waltz was a farewell concert for The Band, a very successful group on its own, that was formerly Dylan's backup band. The Band was breaking up and invited several friends from the music world to play with them. Dylan was one of those invited to perform during the concert. Concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary, called of course, The Last Waltz. Scorsese is an Oscar winning director of many well known movies including Taxi Driver.

Hope you get a chance to find some old interviews of members of The Band talking about had much Dylan’s audiences hated the “new” electric Rock music he switched to. There’s a great piece of concert footage from where Dylan’s response to a crowd loudly booing them, was to turn to these guys and say, “play louder”.

It's interesting to see all the reactors really liking Bob's voice. His voice was joked about when he first became known, hit's on the radio and such in the mid 60's. The singers people were used to back then sang pretty, Barbara Streisand, John Gary, Peter, Paul and Mary, and the Beatles sang nice too. I thought he sounded funny first time I heard him in '66. Now I think he's a great singer.

I recommend everyone tracks down the concert movie for The Last Waltz. Should be more than $20, and is a solid block of emotional driving music. You’ll smile, you find yourself dancing, you’ll laugh, and with a few tracks you’ll be in tears. Only concert movie I recommend higher it Talking Heads, “Stop Making Sense.” All sorts of fun on it, as the band, stage, and action literally build up than break down until it’s just one man playing you a song in his guitar. Do try to find the uncut one, as it has the TomTom club segment in the middle of the set instead of awkwardly at the end.

Forever Young was written for his children. You have to consider, Bob Dylan and the Band had toured together for ten years. This was the Band’s farewell and they knew it was the last time they were ever going to play together. Thad was Robbie Robertson on guitar, if you want to hear a jam like no other, off the same album, “The Last Waltz” Robinson and Eric Clapton have an incredible guitar duel on “Further up on the Road”

Now that you've been reacting to Dylan, you should give a listen to some songs from Bob Dylan's favorite songwriter - Gordon Lightfoot. A few suggestions: "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald", "Sundown", "If You Could Read My Mind", "Black Day In July", "Don Quixote", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" and "The Ballad Of The Yarmouth Castle". Dylan famously once said that when he hears a Lightfoot song, he wishes it would never end.

Rick didn't really form The Band, they were all playing with Ronnie Hawkins, and the all felt it was time to move on, they wanted to play different kind of music, so they split. for awhile they were Levon and the Hawks, then they got a chance to be the back up band for Dylan, and then when they all moved to Woodstock and Robbie started to write songs, that is when they became The Band. I do agree Rick is great on guitar, but esepcially as a singer, Robbie is great on guitar as well. Love all of them, but Rick and Robbie are my favorites.

People walked out, booed, jeered, etc. I'm so damn glad we didn't grow up in the "American Idol" or "The Voice" era, when folks like Dylan, Petty, Neil Young, Cocker, Leon Russell, Garcia, John Bell etc. would have never had a chance in hell with their voices.
