If people really knew Dylan no-one, no-one would say he has a bad voice. His voice is the most apt voice ever And the harmonica and guitar give it atmosphere. And the cadence of this song is off the charts

I’ve seen him recently a couple of times in Sugarland Texas and his voice was the best and clearest I’ve ever heard. I was so lucky to have a front row seat in front of him. No cell phones allowed. Was a blessed treat that was.

I'm as unapologetically agnostic as one can get, but for me, this is the most beautiful religious song I've ever heard. It just moves me like no other of it's kind. There are many allusions to the Bible. The title itself comes from the Psalms 139:17-18. "How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!"

My son and I just saw Mr. Dylan two weeks ago (our fourth time together seeing him). He sang this as his last song of the evening. It always puts a lump in my throat. Even at 82 he still has a magnetism and you can't take your eyes off of him. What a treasure to our world, Bob Dylan.

As the speaker says: if you had come to understand the lesson here in your youth, the path you might have taken would be so different. I think I get it now because I miss my family so much. I tried to atone for my mistakes and bad choices, but it is destroying to keep looking back and wishing for what you can never have. For my wrongs, I am truly sorry. My daughter passed away from cancer in her early 30's. I pray God will bring me to her the moment I leave this world. There is so much I have to tell her.

A personal song about his relationship to God and the universe, Dylan was most likely inspired by William Blake's mystical poem, "Auguries of Innocence." "To see a world in a grain of sand And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand And eternity in an hour." One of Dylan's most beautiful songs. I believe the guitarist is Danny Kortchmar (worked with Carole King , James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt). Thanks, Stephen and Harri.

Bob Dylan's Slow Train Coming is right there, especially " When He Returns" Bob Dylan The iron no match for the iron rod The strongest wall will crumble and fall to a mighty God For all those who have eyes and all those who have ears It is only he who can reduce me to tears Don't you cry and don't you die and don't you burn Like a thief in the night, he'll replace wrong with right When he returns Truth is an arrow and the gate is narrow that it passes through He unleashed his power at an unknown hour that no one knew How long can I listen to the lies of prejudice How long can I stay drunk on fear out in the wilderness Can I cast it aside, all this loyalty and this pride Will I ever learn that there'll be no peace, that the war won't cease Until he returns Surrender your crown on this blood stained ground, take off your mask He sees your deeds, he knows your needs even before you ask How long can you falsify and deny what is real How long can you hate yourself for the weakness you conceal Of every earthly plan that be known to man, he is unconcerned He's got plans of his own to set up his throne When he returns

You cannot name on one hand musicians that can play a harmonica and make it sing like Bob Dylan can......it's a very difficult instrument to play solo and make it sound so glorious. Usually, the harmonica is used in conjunction with other instruments to blend or accent musical pieces.

BRO, This song goes back to the 1980s, when Bob Dylan experienced a conversion of his heart and soul. This song is from the CD "Shot of Love". Previous to that recording, there's also "Saved"; and "Slow Train Coming", both Gospel CDs. Dylan's "Oh Mercy" CD has a particular song you may enjoy, "Ring Them Bells". If you relisten to your song you reacted to, I'm sure you'll grasp the meaning Dylan's trying to impart. And yes, there are some that want "Every Grain Of Sand" to be played whenever they depart this earth. THANK YOU for your reaction, and please be tempted to enjoy more, especially from my suggestions!

I'm strongly tempted to suggest/opine that guitarist Kortchmar played through a Leslie (rotating organ speaker on fast) for that churchy, fluid, etheric effect. Either that or some electronic device set to emulate the sound. A personal favourite sound for the guitar for me. Lovely song, thoughtful, positive reaction. I very much enjoy your Dylan reactions, please do keep them coming, Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 👍 😀

My favourite aspect of this wonderful song is the equivocation that softens the hard edge of some of the religious material on his previous couple of records. At this point Dylan was easing back on the fire and brimstone stuff and reengaging with the secular world. The line 'I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea, sometimes I turn there's someone there, other times it's only me' is a killer. It's not a man 100% convinced, but is having the doubts I think we all have at times.

The reference in the chorus to the hairs on one’s head being numbered, and in the final verse to the sparrows, is a reference to the Bible verses in the Gospels of Matthew and of Luke, about taking comfort in the fact that God knows and cares for you, as He does not even forget a single sparrow and knows when each one dies, and you (a human created in God’s image) are much more valuable than a sparrow; and also that God knows the precise number of hairs on your head. For example: “29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew, Chapter 10, Verses 29-31 (English Standard Version) There are also biblical references to God, as our Creator, having more thoughts on each of us than there are grains of sand. See, e.g., “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.” Psalm 139:17-18 (ESV)

For me a masterpiece; with non-native English, I have to deal with the text a lot, but the "optimistic-sounding" music makes me happy. The guitarist in demand is Danny Kortchmar❤, who also played for Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon. I remember the first of the three "religious" albums better as a whole Slow Train Coming. I admit also because of the guitarists Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers/both Dire Straits. Tip: Precious Angel - musical with dancing guitar, lyrics "hard stuff", let me get involved more or less depending on the mood - it certainly doesn't hurt to think, especially in these times.✌

The biblical allusions - here there is ‘But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows’ - seem to work better than his attempts at outright gospel messages. I think the thing is that once you believe then the only way to go is upward and write worship songs. Or if you are going to preach, then preach.
