These lyrics are so moving. And not only does Dylan have the bravery to address what many folk are afraid to talk about, he is also brave enough to address what they are afraid to think.

Dylan caught grief when he went electric. Then he caught grief for going gospel. People wanted to hear the hit songs from yesteryear. They were not thrilled to hear these new christian songs. But he continued to forge his own path and endure. I'll suggest 'Forever Young'. Beautiful music and thought provoking lyrics.

Your face said it all with this song. There are several gems among his Christian albums, but this is my favorite from that era. I've always loved the “temptations angry flame” line. I’m happy you noticed it. Speaks to something that is universal to every human that has ever lived.

Not a Christian song, a disguised jumble of sensitive, emotional sounding, confusing lyrics that neive born again's fell for and called Christian. No Christian message here; from the man who said he belonged to "the church of the poisoned mind".

@@stephenbiggins9114 the bride of Christ has a desperate need to free God from the box of her theology -the word of God is not the Black ink on the white page that is what we call scripture - the Word of God is Spirit -the spirit spoke the word to Moses and the prophets - in my humble opinion scholars and theologians have a carnal understanding of scripture - this is why the Apostle John says we have all been given the spirit of Truth you need no man to teach you - it is why pull tools the former pig and Idol worshipers in Corinth that they had received the spirit which knows the mind of God and they had the mind of Christ which is to know the things that God gives FREELY - it is why Jesus said call no man Rabbi or teacher cuz you all have one teacher he was referring to the Spirit - Jesus who is the Eternal Word said the flesh profits nothing my word is spirit my word is life

I have this album but I had almost forgotten about this song. I don't even know what to say. It never sounded better. And the harmonica - Whoa! Like you, I was blown away by it. If you'd like to hear Dylan doing country songs listen to something off his "Nashville Skyline" album. And I would also like to highly recommend "Brownsville Girl" and "Moonlight". You seem to be as impressed with Dylan as I was some 50 years ago and continue to be. Great reaction.

My favorite Bob Dylan song from his "Christian period". Unbelievably beautiful. The lines: "I hear the ancient footsteps/ like the motion of the sea/ sometimes I turn there's someone there/ other times its only me.... Wow. In those few lines Dylan poetically describes to perfection the way God appears to come and go in our lives, but in reality never leaves us.

I saw Dylan 3 times, once in 1980 I a small 5000 seat venue about 90% full, in the middle of his gospel period. He had 3 gospels singers come out first and it was thumping loud gospel lol and my friend and I and the girl I hadn’t seen since school and I were able to get seats 2 rows out about 15 feet from Dylan when he came out. He did his whole catalogue, never preached a word and his on core was a 3 song acoustic set of old songs. Had maybe 3 of his Christian songs. He was not overtly there to preach to anyone. He let his songs do the work. All 3 shows were different, all stunning, the last I saw was 1988 when he toured with Tom Petty…

I had to smile at your enjoyment of listening to this song which matches my feelings about it, too. I remember, vaguely, of Mr. Dylan mentioning some people didn't think he should play the harmonica. People without souls, I imagine. I am not a religious person but I feel religious when I hear this song. And I am so grateful to the world for recognizing his greatness for which he has received every award that can be given to him BEFORE his death so he knows the love of the whole world.

I like that most of Dylan's Christian songs aren't trying to push you to believe what he does, they're just about his own experiences, or how he see's the world through his faith. A couple of other artists who have some really good original Christian songs are Carrie Underwood, and Amy Grant. This song's harmonica parts are the best I've ever heard. The lyrics, well that's just Bob Dylan being the master wordsmith throughout his career. The man only writes great songs.

In case you don't know this is the last album of his gospel trilogy (you already did Gotta Serve Somebody, which is from the first one). They are straight forward proselytizing albums (or at least straight forward christian, as you can see in those lyrics), after his conversion to Christianity. There's a cut I think from a documentary on youtube calles the gospel interview, or something like that, which is an interview from that epoqcue. I recommend Property of Jesus, since we are on that mood. haha 👍👍😄

Shot of Love is considered the last half of his 2 1/2 Christian albums. A lot of the imagery is biblically-based "Master's Hand," "Every hair is numbered," "Every Sparrow Falling" (Mat. 10:29-30), and "Every Grain of Sand" Psalm 139:18. Grains of Sand also refers to Gen. 22 when God promises Abraham his "descendants as numerous ... as the sand on the seashore." At this time Bob was exploring his Jewish heritage and his newfound faith in Christ. The 80s are considered the lowest point in his musical career. Many fans stopped going to his concerts when he started preaching the gospel on stage. Similar to his Folk to Rock transition in the 1960s footage with "Ballad of a Thin Man." Dylan also toured with a few Black Gospel Choir singers as his backup vocals.

Consider Leonard Cohen’s “Democracy” “Everybody Knows” and “Steer Your Way” or Kris Kristofferson’s “Pilgrim Chapter 33” “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down” (Austin Sessions). Not far down the ladder is Gordon Lighfoot’s “Don Quixote.” You may or may not agree, but you won’t be disappointed
