If you could see the introduction to this video, Neil explains that he purchased an old ranch and that an old man who worked as the caretaker of the property came with the purchase. This song is about them and their unique relationship considering the land they lived on. It almost feels as if "the old man" became Neil's father figure and provided him with many insights into the aspects of life.
@Sonny_Eclipse
@Sonny_Eclipse 8 месяцев назад
As Neal tells it, the old caretaker also asked “How does a young man come to be able to afford a place like this” and his reply was “just lucky I guess”

Are you beginning to understand why we Boomers are so critical of today's popular music?
@hazmania
@hazmania 8 месяцев назад
With good reason. So much is rubbish, no poetical or lyrical mastery, barely literate to be honest, and far too much use of electrical gizmos to auto tune the voice, the instruments. Summed up as many “artists” can’t actually sing in tune, can’t play any instruments, or can barely play one, and couldn’t write beautiful, meaningful lyrics if they tried. Obviously there are exceptions (like REN, Dimash, Aurora, Oliver Anthony) but mainly the criticism is fully justified. Annie, Cornwall, UK 🙂🌸

Gen-X here, but I'm right there with you. There's the rare exception, but almost everything being produced now seems like they got it from a landfill on a hot summer day.

@Tijuanabill
@Tijuanabill 4 месяца назад
@@DD-sr9xm I can't agree with that, sorry. Why would the young man say he's "been first and last, look at how the time has passed, I'm all alone at last?", after saying "run around the same old town". These are not the words of a young man, at all. To me, it's obvious the writer is interested in the old man, and his life, but the old man couldn't care less.

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Neil has so many great songs to recommend. He started out in a band called "Buffalo Springfield" and wrote and sang "Mr Soul". Some other songs are "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Nowhere" and "Down By the River". His albums from the early 70s include "After the Gold Rush" and "Harvest" albums which rank are up there with the best in rock. Check out "Don't Let It Bring You Own" and "Southern Man".

I just saw Neil Young a few months ago. He only played one "hit". The rest of the songs were deep tracks and songs that he never released. He meandered all over the stage playing all the different instruments. As someone who grew up with this man's music, it felt like a great honor to see it live. He was funny too while talking to the audience. Try Harvest Moon, Rockin' in the Free World, Cinnamon Girl etc. You can't go wrong really.

who needs a freakin band when you're this talented. The texturing and layering- -the back and forth with the highs and lows---knowing when to let the notes breathe--what notes to play softly and when to pounce on a note or chord is so missing in today's music. True musicianship and composing at the highest level.

Great reaction. I love Neil Young,as did my Dad. He played it for me from the time I was a tiny baby. He can probably be considered as Canada’s greatest musician. For a good retrospective I would recommend For What It’s Worth - Buffalo Springfield (first major band), Ohio - CSNY, , Needle and The Damage Done, Down By The River, Rockin’ In The Free World. My favourite is probably Helpless. Check out the Last Waltz performance of Helpless with help from The Band and Joni Mitchell. 🇨🇦

Listen to that and “Hey Hey, My My (Out of the Blue).” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Ohio,” “After the Gold Rush,” “Powderfinger,” “Southern Man,” “Like a Hurricane,” “Wrecking Ball,” “Cortez the Killer” Oh before I go on-you gotta here “Cortez the Killer” live. Seriously. Other than that stick to the studio versions mainly, but check out both of them eventually. “Down by the River,” “The Needle and the Damage Done,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” “Sample and Hold,” “Comes a Time,” “Fuckin Up,” “Its a Dream” Actually-just listen to all of them lol😂😂😂 But really the ones I listed are really good songs but I couldn’t possibly list all of his really good ones because there are so many.

Neil Young has a totally distinctive voice, just a 24-year-old guy with an acoustic guitar. That total talent. Another Canadian music icon.

Neil is such a talent. So much versatility, talent and lyrical genius. If you want a glimpse of the bridge to grunge check out "Out of the Blue and into the Black" or his work with Crazy Horse. You will really enjoy Neil Young. His lyrics make you think about life and how you live it. It is liberating to live that lyric "It doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you". Live for yourself and be your best self. GOD will take care of the rest if you are living for GOD.

I've seen live as a rocker during his Rust Never Sleeps days, as part of the amazing harmonies and musical perfection of CSNY, as one of the legendary musicians performing for 3 days at Desert Trip 7 years ago. Summer of 2023 i was lucky enough to catch him in an intimate outdoor setting, only about 6000 seats, and his performance was mesmerizing! IMO still one of the best out there. In 1970 five students who were participating in an anti-war protest at Kent State in Ohio, were gunned down by National Guards troops. Neil Young wrote a protest song that day called Ohio. It went on to become one of the most moving songs of that time. Hope you can find the time to react to it. Thanks for Old Man by NY. 👏👏🥰

The amazing thing is the quality of the recording, this is from a 1973 BBC soecial and was recorded live.

The very first concert I ever went to was Crosby Stills Nash & Young in the 70's. This was my favorite song then and it still is today

Neil Young more than anything else is a great song writer. I grew up with him here in Canada and the music from him has lived through out my decades.

I was never a huge Neil Young fan, but I always liked this song. My favorite though, is "Harvest Moon".

NY factoid; his song Heart of Gold, Linda Ronstadt sings in background. Per Linda story he called her up and asked her to come over in and sing background.

Yes, his voice is awesome here. He has very popular songs 15-20 years later that are rougher. Also, his singing was overshadowed most of the time by all three of the other guys in CSN&Y, so his association with other elite musicians divided some loyalties.

There is 55 years of his music to choose from..the old songs are classics to be sure but his music from the 90's onward are every bit as great..don't be afraid to go there...

His electric is powerful❤️🤘neil was wearing lumberjack shirts, jeans and sneaks which was an oddity for the time, because everyone else dressed hippie style

Great insight - hadn’t thought before of his natural comfortable flannels, jeans and sneakers being precursor to the grunge fashion sense apart from his absolutely OG grunge sound on 🎸
