Bob Dylan - Hurricane (Take 1) [ORIGINAL BANNED VERSION]

In late July 1975, this version was recorded at Columbia Studios, New York. However, Dylan was forced to re-record after concerns were raised by Columbia's lawyers. The original lyrics in this version, "I was only robbing the bodies, I hope you understand" could have resulted in a lawsuit from Arthur Dexter Bradely. Because there was too much leakage on the multitracks to make a vocal "punch in," Dylan had to re-record the entire song.
This is the original version, and probably the earliest recording of "Hurricane" in existence. Enjoy this gem while you can!

This is to all the people say Bob Dylan cannot be a singer, hell what is this, what is a great song, he is different voices in different moods, at different points in his life, that's what makes him the best overall as a great songwriter and singer, you would be thankful to see him in concert!
@AnnaLVajda
@AnnaLVajda 2 года назад
I've seen him live and I am thankful. I like that Bob helped Hurricane Carter who subsequently moved to Toronto to assist other wrongfully incarcerated and Bobby had lifted the band from Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto too so that made things seem more square.

Unfortunately his concerts nowadays aren’t very good. I had the opportunity to go to one and I was very dissatisfied. He did not show much enthusiasm and we were not allowed to record or even have access to our phones (probably because nobody would go if they saw how bad it was). If you were able to go to a concert where he actually tried and made an effort I envy you.

I will go as far to say if the Rock n Roll hall of Fame consisted of one man, It would be Dylan. Followed by Keith Richards but that's a different subject entirely, lol. A true artist is someone who never runs out of material. Bob is head and shoulders above them all.

You can continue the argument about who is the greatest rock star. Dylan is just the king of song writing, written and produced 40+ albums. To me, Richards is the poster boy for the definition " Rock Star ". Stones aren't my favorite band, or is Richards my favorite musician but when people say " party like a rockstar"? They can try but nobody partied like Keith Richards.

DetailedRecruiting. You hit it, brother. A true artist doesn't run out of material because messages, memories, and ideas are the atmosphere they live in. Little Bobby Zimmerman knew he had a mission even while he was still a child trying to memorize chords. Start your life as an artist by reading a poem a day -- read it with the attention you would give it if it was directions to the secret treasure you will never need and never receive. The universe needs you.

When the Columbia Records lawyers first rejected this version, Dylan tried to edit the song but found it was too difficult. So he decided to just re-record the whole thing. History is glad he did because the re-recorded version is sped up and has a more urgent tone. This version is great as well and it's awesome to hear it. For the curious, there are about 10 other great backstories to this song which are explored in the following video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F1KS1DFKwQk.html

I remember the early days when Dylon was all acoustic and his die-hard fans said, Oh No, you can't compromise your music and go electric. How wrong they were. Bob knew what he was doing. Going electric-only improved his artistry. Improved his musical artistry and he grew larger than ever. A true master of music and poetry. Hence, the many awards and honors he still receives today. My take on it. Thanks for reading.

You are absolutely right that going electric opened up a whole new world of artistry for him, which was a great move. I guess with true talent, you really got to take risks to create new paradigms and who could do it better than Dylan? I saw him twice live, and each time he performed a completely different vibe and sound, both terrific in their own way. What a musician, and poet. One of a kind.

He played this version on pbs in 1975.bob has always changed lyrics to his songs.he also changed at the last minute from a d chord to a c chord.notice how much slower and deeper this version sounds .?everything was sharper. the insanity that we could actually do this to a fellow human being.the words tell the whole story.to bad he didn't come out with a part two of this song on the bravery of the man who was arrested with rueban carter.i think his name was John artis.( Not sure if last name is correct , I can say he just died recently.he is the hero in this story.

Wasn’t really “banned” per say. Columbia came down on Bob and told him to change a line in the song “I was only robbing the bodies” which didn’t actually happen and could’ve resulted in a lawsuit for defamation/libel. Because there was so much microphone leakage in the recording, they couldn’t just overdub the new line in as it would still be audible and would fuck up the rhythm of the track. So Bob re-recorded the song and made it significantly faster as a result. That’s why this take is 2 minutes longer

This version is much better than the released one. I LO,VE the mix, the reverb, the urgency....... now I think I know why I never warmed up to the released version tho I love Desire - Dylan was pissed that he had to record it..... I don't blame him... he had to know this was a better take - and kudos to the producer, mixer who put the original version this way..... love the woman's higher voice. Can't recall her name . She was in Nashville..

@b.gabbard6046 3 года назад
@@seanryan3928 I think he was making the point that Rubin Carter eventually received a 2nd trial in 1976, largely due to the exposure that Dylan's song brought to the case...and was found guilty AGAIN! Remember, he was never found not-guilty. He was released because his case was overturned on a technicality and the prosecution declined to try him again, because too much time had passed and most of the cops and also witnesses were either dead or in prison.

Wow! I always get the chills from this song. This version is very good, but I do like Scarlet Riveras upmixed violin on the version that ended up on the Desire album, even more in The Rolling Thunder film where it is so insane intense to fit the lyrics. On the other hand Dylans singing is better on this rare version presented here. Thanks a million for sharing this jewel.
