Here is one of the many gems in Dylan's treasure trove of unreleased, unfinished, unpolished, but nonetheless immaculate creations. There's something about this recording that makes me feel like I'm melting.
Some background: During the infamous 1966 European Tour, in which Dylan traveled with The Hawks (later becoming The Band), guitarist Robbie Robertson would usually jam with Dylan in various hotel rooms in between concerts, helping him work out half-baked compositions. Luckily, legendary filmmaker DA Pennebaker managed to capture some of these moments. This piece was recorded at the North British Station Hotel (now the Millennium Hotel) in Glasgow, Scotland, along with three other works in progress; follow the link below to listen to the full session. In my opinion, however, this one is the best of the lot.
I believe the words to this song were improvised on the spot, with perhaps some kind of general blueprint of the vibe. This would make sense, as the words are certainly not up to par with circa 1966 Dylan. It's funny to me, though, that even ad-libbed Dylan lyrics trump that of most of his contemporaries. In that sense, this recording is a testament to Dylan's creative brilliance and efficient songwriting ability.
This is an edit of the original recording (which you can hear below). On the source tape, Dylan and Robertson pause many times to work out the chord progression. I edited these pauses out to create a more complete, polished track. I also upgraded the sound using professional studio software. Hope you enjoy the final product.

In the English-speaking workd, Dylan is regarded mainly as a wordsmith; to the rest of the world who catch only a word or two here and there he is considered as a gifted melodist and phrasing master vocalist. This is one stellar example. Snippets of this melody would turn up again in "You're A Big Girl Now" from the hallowed Blood On The Tracks.

Anthony - Funny you should describe him like that - as in one of my dreams about Dylan I saw the image of a hand of fire inside a suitcuff - the hand's index finger was pointing ahead as it floated over a road and Dylan and a whole bunch of people were following it . . . another dream of Dylan he and I were lying a four poster brass bed and he said 'you got it you just need some publicity' just then there was an earthquake and I grabed my packpack and jumped out the window. I've had quite a few dreams of Dylan and I'm sure many people have - expecially song writers - wouldn't it be interesting to have a book of the dreams people have had of him?
@Anthony-hu3rj
@Anthony-hu3rj 3 года назад
@@DagaanGalakticos An interesting dream about the hand of fire, Bob Dylan following down the road. Thanks for sharing! I would never think that I'd be sharing a Bob Dylan dream, but hell, might as well. This is from my dream notebook in 1995. "I and others meet Bob Dylan. He asks me specifically to go home with him. It sounds sexual but isn't. I don't want to hurt my two (women?) companions but I don't ask Bob to have them over too. Bob's room has unfinished sheet-rocked walls. Also, his house has other buildings in it. His house has a dome over it. We remember having seen the dome but didn't know what was under it. Then there is a sky in his house. But his room has a large unfinished, permanently unfinished wall. And speakers … He is very lonely. He wants me to comfort him. He wants me specifically to come back later and comfort him." His house has other buildings in it And there is a sky in his house But his room has a large unfinished Permanently unfinished wall
@DagaanGalakticos
@DagaanGalakticos 3 года назад
@@Anthony-hu3rj Hi Anthony. Wow - the symbolism in your dream is manifold. Do you know that in his house in Malibu Beach has either a dome or a pyramid of copper for a roof? I think Dylan is lonely beyond belief even tho I don't think he's elitist or anti social. I would almost assume he's a heroin addict except that he remembers all the words to some of his most complicated songs and performs them still. Another dream I had was of he and his wife sitting on a grassy slope watching an Indianapolis 500 type car race. I probably wrote all my dreams of him down over the decades but can't think of any more. Maybe you have some aspect of your character that really would offer companionship to him. Extraordinary thing for him to specifically ask for your company. Aloha.

Im 39 years old, as a young child my father gave me a copy of, "Oh, Mercy" for Christmas, I must have been around 7 or 8 years old. The year before I asked for a Walkman and I guess he noticed how much I enjoyed music since I used it more than any toy I ever had. I heard this sing a few days ago for the first time and I have played it so many times again since. It reminds me of a girl I knew when I was around the same age I was when I got the Walkman, though I haven't seen her in years, I have never left her behind. Something about a certain type of sadness in the heart is nostalgic and also the only remnants left of something that meant so much to an individual. She will always be my first love, maybe the only love.
