I live 6000 miles away from my family, have done so for years. My parents came to meet the new baby and we watched home movies, one of them was my baby sister making a home movie, looking around the house for me “where’s Duncan I want to film him” I missed her wedding because I’m so far away and it was a bad time of year. I broke down in tears and this was the only song on my mind. Don’t be gone, don’t be cool, don’t disappear into your own world. You only have one chance to be there. I know all the lyrics don’t line up with my story, but the emotions sure do.

You know when people who are casual Dylan fans ask you what your favourite Dylan song is and of course it's an impossible question to answer ..... except.....it isn't. Cos this is my favourite Dylan song. And it's not even an actual song. It's more a kind of rendering of dream states by a man with the most heartbroken heartbreaking voice in the world. Just totally beautiful.

I'm not there is the greatest song never written.

One of his greatest ever songs, and it remains unheard by most casual fans. This is quite hypnotic.

This is what happened. One day Dylan joined the others in The Big Pink as was his custom. He was pretty excited as he had just had a new song come to him that morning. He started playing and singing, and Garth Hudson (the other genius in the room) immediately switched on his tape recorder, and then joined in on the organ. He soon picked up the vibe and you can hear what an amazing song was being sketched out, and as usual both he and Dylan perform it as if it was already perfected. But it isn't - it needs Dylan to discover more of the lyrics than he has in his head at that moment. But they never come, and so he leaves it as it and never goes back to it.

For me, this is number one, the ultimate Dylan song. Not many songs make weep every time I hear it. It speaks to a weary, frustrated soul. It's got to be on my very short list of favourite songs. Thanks,Bob, not sure you appreciate how great this one is.

Unifinished and broken songs are the best

There isn't another song that is better written nor conveys more emotion. Word-for-word, this is a masterpiece. To think he recorded this once and never released it just adds to that even more. The man is a king.

Leaving hurts; being left is worse. Dylan's saddest song. Discarded--who knows why. Resurrected, I assume, with the movie of the same name. Closest to Dylan being vulnerable. Maybe that's the key. I have to limit the times I listen. Cuts too closely to the mistakes I've made in my romantic history.

This song is so haunting. I remember when I was in the process of breaking up with my girlfriend 10 years ago, I used to listen to this song on repeat. Such a painful gem.

Sorry to disappoint, but it is a complete song with very complete sentences and lyrics. The song is a slowed down version, Dylan is singing extremely fast though. Just increase the playback speed to 1.75 and listen for the completed lyrics, like; she don't hear (pause) the wind cry... He's singing in two part verse. The only words that can be heard at normal speed are the ones that he holds longer. It's the same as any other song. Sometimes the last words of a verse are held for a few extra beats. Enjoy 😎👍

Great to listen to this memorable song again and again. So thanks. But I have I question regarding the lyric transcribed as "She's a lone-hearted beauty but she don't like spot" I have to confess that I laughed out loud when I read that, and I was then pleased to hear that that is (apparently) NOT what he actually sings -- though I can't determine what it IS that he is actually saying. Any help?

Years ago I found the full version with Robbie Robertson of "Can't leave her behind ", -- all great but he decided on the last 3 minutes,where they change chords n Robertson says "there's a bridge? " n it should have been recorded to vinyl as a single. Once they got the fckg bridge which was the right fckg chord then Dylan goes on and it fades. What a fuckin shame man!!-- unbelievable,typical I just hope they have a tape of the finished idea somewhere,someday.
