"It doesn’t feel like a coincidence that Dylan picked this moment to unveil his 2020 song [CROSSING the RUBICON] about a war", Andy Greene wrote in RollinStone magazine. Hear Bob Dylan Debut ‘Crossing the Rubicon’ at First Concert of 2022 tour Thursday night at the Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. "It was essentially the same show he brought around the States late last year, but he dropped Early Roman Kings and replaced it with the live debut of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tune Crossing the Rubicon.” (RS)

*EDIT* Crossing The Rubicon with lyric changes for this performance BY: BOB DYLAN 1- I crossed the Rubicon on the 14th day of the most dangerous month of the year At the worst time at the worst place - that’s all I seem to hear I got up early, so I could greet the Goddess of the Dawn I painted my wagon - I abandoned all hope and I crossed the Rubicon 2- The Rubicon is the Red River, going gently as she flows Redder than your ruby lips and the blood that flows from the rose Three miles north of purgatory - one step from the great beyond I prayed to the cross and I kissed the girls and I crossed the Rubicon 3- What are these dark days I see in a world so badly bent How can I redeem the time - the time so idly spent How much longer can it last - how long can this go on I embraced my love put down my head and I crossed the Rubicon 4- I can feel the bones beneath my skin and they’re tremblin’ with rage I’ll make your wife a widow - you’ll never see old age new- *Sun has turned to gold and the Winter chill is gone* I pawned my watch and I paid my debts and I crossed the Rubicon 5- Put my heart upon the hill where some happiness I’ll find If I survive then let me love - let the hour be mine Take the high road - take the low, take any one that you want I poured the cup and I passed it along and I crossed the Rubicon 6- new- *Well you foxy man, you're the talk of the town you usurping of all the other younger men* *I trusted you once and that was more than enough, I never trusted in that person again* *I'll lift your bonnet, cut your head off with a crooked knife, It ain't over till it's gone* I stood between heaven and earth and I crossed the Rubicon 7- Well I feel the Holy Spirit inside and see the light that freedom gives I believe it’s within the reach of every man who lives new- *Well the lights sun was going down and the night was coming on* *I harnessed the moon took out the pits* and I crossed the Rubicon 8- Mona Baby, are you still in my mind - I truly believe that you are Couldn’t be anybody else but you who’s come with me this far The killing frost is on the ground and the *early days* are gone I lit the torch and I looked to the east and I crossed the Rubicon Copyright © 2020 by Special Rider Music Original lyrics to stanza 4 Show me one good man in sight that the sun shines down upon Original lyrics to stanza 6 You defiled the most lovely flower in all of womanhood Others can be tolerant - others can be good I’ll cut you up with a crooked knife and I’ll miss you when you’re gone Original stanza 7 is missing altogether which was: You won’t find any happiness here - no happiness or joy Go back to the gutter and try your luck - find you some nice young pretty boy Tell me how many men I need and who I can count upon I strapped my belt and buttoned my coat and I crossed the Rubicon Because the original stanza 7 is not there, stanza 8 is stanza 7 and part of the lyrics have been changed from: Keep as far away as possible - it’s darkest ‘fore the dawn

Sounds completely changed, seems more level-headed, somehow lifted to another level. The album version sounded like a personal doomsday scenario with all the consequences, this version is more universal, more of a war scenario, a human being involved in a bigger downfall. Caesar goes into a battle that brings no gain, it's nothing heroic, it's just doom, and he brings death to the other contributors as well. Mr. Dylan is a quick-change artist, with just a few strokes he draws sharply like Picasso, widens the view, has an effect - the ides of march are the beginning of the death of Caesar, or another unnamed dictator? Thank you for share

Time has changed again and we are all a part of it - we all have eyes and ears. The Rubicon is crossed again. Bob Dylan sings reservedly, the blues becomes quiet and dangerous - thereby losing nothing - imprints his time stamp on us.

Thank you so much!🙌 What a wonderfully presented upload of Bob’s LIVE debut! I appreciate your creativity and thoughtfulness of this! I also am grateful for the link to a blog about it. I think Bob’s LIVE performance is more approachable than his Studio recording. It really invites you into the atmosphere of what crossing the Rubicon can mean in modern terms and in these days if such great unrest. The whole idea of crossing the or a Rubicon today seems even more challenging given an increase of political device, polarization and complexities of our world. Yes much more complex in the sense that although we have all the tools and means to change things and communicate better we are often deficient in our ability to use all these tools in a positive and effective manner! We have not operated well or availed ourselves of so much opportunity. Apathy has swallowed good will and leisure the fortitude of following through. For Bob to write this song is a strong demonstration of being true to the truth in ourselves which also ties in with Shakespeare’s line in Hamlet “to thine own self be true”. The problem i see is, that in today’s society clarity of truth has been clouded by albeit well meaning ideas and political correctness. Very few people have courage to call it as they see it and even fewer will dialogue about. Hence, we spend way too much time hanging around in limbo when we could actually be doing something inspiring and transformative. As Bob says in “Every Grain Of Sand”, we are “hanging in the balance.” I know he changed the lyrics to the other half of that line from “the reality of man” to “a perfect finished plan”, but it doesn’t matter in my view because either way there are times in our lives we will face crossing of rubicons and one final one this side of “the great beyond”! I don’t really believe in the traditional idea of purgatory but if it exists, then i think we are in it right now! 🤍

Thank you NB for posting this song. Of course it is no coincidence that Bob would now sing this song. Like all other songs from RARW album this one also sounds different than the original. I would love to listen to the whole concert but I am very grateful nonetheless to be able at least to listen to the great premiere of Crossing The Rubicon. Visionaries are pushing the limits and crossing the boundaries but madmen do that too especially when they have too much power and they are deceived into thinking that their will is the law. Thank you again NB!

For those keeping score at home, this song replaced Early Roman Kings in the set (which is not really about Romulus, Numa Pompilius, Tarquin the Proud etc.) who wear sharkskin suits and sound a lot more like the "Latin Kings" (GET IT??) of a bygone modern era LOL, nor is this song actually about Julius Caesar, although it represents at least the second reference to that Tyrant of old (thinking of the "What Would Julius Caesar Do (WWJCD)" reference in My Own Version of You and, funnily enough, I was AT this show in Phoenix when it debuted, in the 6th row and it took many of us by pleasant surprise. Chap next to me had been listening to the sets lying around here on YT from the Fall 2021 shows and said to me, just before this song started, the only song he didn't play (in the Fall) from the new album (R&RW) was Crossing the Rubicon (nor Murder Most Foul either, but that's hardly a jam set song). And *voilà* this song started! With this debut performance 9 of the 10 songs from the new album were covered, and it seems from the set lists in Tucson and Albuquerque that this is now a regular fixture for the time being. I think the band started off a little choppy, but definitely warmed up as the set went on, that is just my opinion. Bob stayed behind the piano the whole set (until time for a semi-bow to acknowledge the audience) and he looked frail, leaning on the mic stand for support. Throughout his time behind the piano he would sit between songs and when he stood often leaned on the piano for support, but his voice was in fine form. Seemed to be using a notebook either for music or lyrics, which is very unlike Bob, but give the guy a break, he's 81 in two months. Only a little banter before the last song introducing the band, asking if Alice Cooper (a Phoenix area retiree) or Barry Goldwater (!) was still around in Phoenix. [Good question, I thought.] And then that they [the band] stayed at a hotel which purportedly had Marilyn Monroe's *favorite* swimming pool. Yeah I dunno about that either. Weirdest part (different from October 2019 when I saw him in KC) was that some hellish half-light was trained on the auditorium for the whole set, with understandably aggressive roaming security flashing madly at every suspect with a camera or phone out. It is what it is, right? More than once first-time attendees who were likely inebriated said loudly, I just wanted to see him before he dies. That's the spirit!

Visionaries are crying tears of blood about the uncertainty of outcomes. As the "ides of March" are swiftly approaching we are witnesses to the exodus and impending doom. Faith and freedom lift souls nearer to the rapture. Spiritual comfort for the veil which blinds us from seeing the oozing wounds and silent suffering. Purity and holiness are symbolized by the blood stained white rose. Blessings.

Honestly, especially with the "foxy man" lyrics, I see this song more from Zelenskyy's perspective. I know that "crossing the Rubicon" refers to Caesar's invasion, but it's also used in modern parlance for crossing the point of no return. I think of Zelenskyy being offered a ride out and saying, "Hell no." "How much longer can it last - how long can this go on," indeed. Fuck Putin. Fuck Russian imperialism. I've lived in eastern Slovakia for 17 years. I stand with Ukraine. So does God.
