Lyrics:
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
Well, I wake up in the morning, fold my hands and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas that are drivin' me insane
It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
Well, he hands you a nickel, he hands you a dime
He asks you with a grin if you're havin' a good time
Then he fines you every time you slam the door
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
Well, he puts his cigar out in your face just for kicks
His bedroom window, it is made out of bricks
The national guard stands around his door
Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
Well, she talks to all the servants about man and God and law
Everybody says, she's the brains behind pa
She's sixty-eight but she says she's fifty-four
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
Well, I try my best to be just like I am
But everybody wants you to be just like them
They say sing while you slave and I just get bored
Ah, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more

As a musician I am just STUNNED at the transformation Rage Against the Machine did to this tune when covering it. I've been listening to RATM's version for 20 years and today is the first time I heard Dylan's original. Hell, I didn't even think RATM was doing a cover! Spectacular song with either style!

I knew it was a cover, but I gotta say, I love Zach's voice so much on this track that today is the first day I actually listen to Dylan's version... After 15 years. Crazy how the two versions convey a different meaning while having the same lyrics. The original has a tongue-in-cheek, jester vibe, while ratm sounds like the most solemn proletarian prophecy

love this song but maybe not one of its kind given the musicologist Dylan was at a young age, I'd be surpriised if he hadn't heard at least the first & likely the second of the 2 versions of the same (as each other) song below I'm thinking Maggie's Farm is an updated version tweaking that tale in Mose's version of Parchment Farm the way Mose did Bukka's version w/ Dylan's version saying lotta jobs taste as weirdly abusive as prison except maybe even weirder & yr only crime was needing to work to live -- sorta like "Born in Chicago" to taste like "I was born in a prison" -- & the boisterous spirit w/ which he's saying "F*k that sh*t" I ain't goin' which Mose was also clearly saying but in a manner suited to the '50s more '50s understated instead of '60s electric Dylan's brazen brash tone mose allison ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DB1CYXBSHP0.html Pete Townsend + others talking about the song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LaF_UJJjre4.html wikipedia says buck white wrote the original after a 2year stint on parchment farm for shooting a man in the thigh ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jM23S12LXaE.html Judge give me life this mornin' Down on Parchman farm Judge give me life this mornin' Down on Parchman farm I wouldn't hate it so bad But I left my wife in mourn Oh, goodbye wife All you have done gone Oh, goodbye wife All you have done gone But I hope some day You will hear my lonesome song Oh, listen you men I don't mean no harm Oh, listen you men I don't mean no harm If you wanna do good You better stay off old Parchman farm We got to work in the mornin' Just at dawn of day We got to work in the mornin' Just at dawn of day Just at the settin' of the sun That's when the work is done I'm down on Parchman farm I sho' wanna go back home I'm down on Parchman farm But I sho' wanna go back home But I hope some day I will overcome Mose Allison wrote an interesting variety of songs, & the spirit+range of their gist is definitely kindred to Dylan's, tho' the musical settings suit diff eras+genres, & like every songwriter, they got their ideas from everywhere, including other songs Your mind is on vacation and your mouth is working overtime and Hello There Universe are 2 good examples to start with

Amazing to me how ahead of his time. Always a step ahead. Our true trubadore. Loved this one when he first released it. Long ago. Meant something to me and many others back then. Listening to it again with new thoughts. It means even more now. Fits like a glove for the economic tricks we keep struggling with, forever it seems. But with current events, I could imagine many question why work so hard to enrich the wealthy, reward the legal criminals, follow the rules, and still lose your house. This song still calls to me, even after all these years. Pertinent.

that's HER! the woman in RED! did they get married? I forget. I saw her playing the violin and fell madly in love with her and I noticed Bob kept looking at her on stage all those times. I'm a lovechild of the summer of 69 and mom was watching that special on Netflix and there she was; gothic before there was gothic! so pale with such beautiful long hair. incredible woman! incredible musicians. incredible music that really changed peoples lives for the better.

You have God given right to free will, the choice is yours. Besides, if one knows what sin IS, then one knows when hes sinning, so you've made a choice by then to something you already have the answer to, within.

Perhaps, 'MISTAKES' MAYBE THE PATH TO YOUR SIN. YOUR SILENT TIME, IS IN PLACE, AS SO ONE WILL CONTEMPLATE THE CUNNUMDRUNS OF LIFE AS WE KNOW IT, THEN WHILE LIVING DAILY LIFE, WE BEHAVE IN MANNER OF EXAMPLE. NO MISTAKE.

@@danielbarry7081 and, somewhere, someone might need to hear/read what I said. I love Bob Dylan He has been a solid staple in my world. I thought about what I said while composing both... but my thumbs kept typing away...so it is a lesson for myself as well and a perspective to be pondered by another... or not. I'm guessing here, that the universe has my back on this one. Free will is a serious option.

@realhillkell

Its funny but I think Dylan predicted that would happen and I think in some sense "Maggie's Farm" is a kind of metaphor for authoritarian fans who wants Dylan to only do what THEY want (Acoustic Folk Music) and Dylan is saying he's sick of it and will do whatever he wants from now he ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more, the last lines are spot on "I Try my best to be just like I am But everybody wants you to be Just like THEM They say sing while you slave and I just get bored"
