Today I will do a 3 in 1 video. This song is probably one of my favorites. Why? Good question. The lyrics are really good. But that's not why. The singing is great and the guitar sounds perfect. But is that why one song sticks to your ear and another does not? I have been thinking of this lately. And I have come to realise that finally it is THE MELODY that counts. I would like to elaborate on this further at another time. The song itself is Dylan's interpretation of an old Scottish or Irish traditional. Scientists do not yet agree on the latter. But for some reason I really fall for the melody of this song. I found out that it goes back to the 17th century. Dylan got inspiration from Liam Glancy. I have attached his performance. I don't know what it is, but I experience Glancy's performance as ordinary and Dylan's as masterful art. Is that only a question of taste? Don't know. And watch till the end to see Dylan sing this song for Frank Sinatra! Just gorgeous. Did you know this was Sinatra's favorite Dylan song? Ernie the German said: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here". I say: "You don't have to go home and you can stay here". Have a good weekend!
