Bob Dylan - Restless Farewell (LIVE FOOTAGE 1964)

Here's a beautiful version of what is in my opinion one of Dylan's most underrated and quotable pieces. This was recorded on February 1, 1964, at CBC TV Studios in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for the show "Quest". This episode is a 30-minute exhibit of Dylan's music (the rest of which I will upload soon) and was also the show's final episode. Subsequently, the producer of "Quest", Daryl Duke, quit CBC and moved to Los Angeles, CA to work on "The Steve Allen Show", where Dylan coincidentally appeared a month after his "Quest" performance (see this appearance here: • Bob Dylan Interview & ... ).
Many thanks to Markie for this upgraded footage, which is a 2005 digital transfer of an original 16mm kinescope. From that, I equalized the audio and corrected some of the lighting.
Peace & Love,
~SP

I’m older than you and I’ve left every show of his thinking the EXACT same thing. To think this man won’t be around some day is just unfathomable. His words have literally shaped the man I am today and many, many of the things I’ve done and places I’ve lived. I once took a flight to Paris for a year to live and write because of his words. I thank Bob in the same breath that I thank my Creator with.

That is wonderful. Somehow his young voice was able to capture all the weight, insight, and enduring sadness of whole lifetimes in a few short minutes. It was like he was hundreds of years old, and a young man in his 20's all at the same time.

My thoughts exactly. I was 12 when he recorded it. And though I liked him and heard a lot of folk music, I was a greatest hits guy until I grew older. I wonder whether, if I'd have been 18, I could have recognized what this video shows so clearly.
@georgecoventry8441
@georgecoventry8441 3 года назад
@@mikem668 - I first became aware of his amazing songwriting primarily through the recordings of Joan Baez and Judy Collins, but I didn't really listen to Bob himself doing his songs till 1969! I was 21 by then, and the moment I finally heard him doing those songs *himself* it was like the most amazing thing I'd ever heard in my life! Joan Baez always said that Bob Dylan wrote "the best songs", and she was sure right about that. I thank both of them for having made a huge difference in my life. They were a blessing in each other's lives too.
@mikem668
@mikem668 3 года назад
@@georgecoventry8441 I'd heard plenty of Dylan himself before 1969, but mostly Dylan sung by others. And I'd seen people like Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton. Around the time of Nashville Skyline, I got hooked. And I had the money to go back and move beyond the greatest hits. Unlike RU-vid, you had to make choices and you were limited by who knew what. On singing, I love Baez imitating Dylan. But no one sings Dylan better than Dylan IMO. We were lucky then to be alive.
@georgecoventry8441
@georgecoventry8441 3 года назад
@@mikem668 - You're absolutely right that no one sings Dylan better (or even as well) as Dylan does. Yes, we were lucky indeed to have lived in those times. I was almost unware of the "greatest hits" or the "Top 40" aspect of popular music, because I didn't listen much to the commercial radio stuff. What I listened to was whole albums of whichever artist caught my interest....by buying the vinyl records....so I got to know all the songs on those albums, and didn't much care which ones were the "hits" on the radio. If I really liked someone, I bought every album they recorded and got to know all their recorded material. So in the start (early and mid-1960's) I was listening to records by Joan Baez...Buffy Sainte-Marie....Ian & Sylvia....Judy Collins....the better known North American "folksingers" of the time, in other words. And that eventually led me to Bob Dylan, naturally, though it took awhile longer than it might have. As soon as I started listening to Bob, I bought all his records, and they had a bigger impact on me than anything else I've heard before...or since. As for Baez, I thought she did the Dylan songs wonderfully....but definitely in her own style, which suited her. She was not *imitating* Bob's style.....she was doing the songs her way, and very well. I generally love the way she does Dylan songs, although it's very different sounding from how Bob does them....except on occasion when she's clowning around and *deliberately* imitating his vocals and phrasing. She does that now and then, just for fun. They sounded great doing the songs together too, kind of like silk mixed with sand. It was surprisingly effective, and Joan's a stunningly good harmony singer.

Restless Farewell Bob Dylan Oh, all the money that in my whole life I did spend Be it mine right or wrongfully I let it slip gladly to friends To tie up the time most forcefully But the bottles are done We've killed each one And the table's full and overflowed And the corner sign Says it's closing time So I'll bid farewell and be down the road Oh, ev'ry girl that ever I've touched I did not do it harmfully And ev'ry girl that ever I've hurt I did not do it knowin'ly But to remain as friends You need the time to make amends And stay behind And since my feet are now fast And point away from the past I'll bid farewell and be down the line Oh, ev'ry foe that ever I faced The cause was there before we came And ev'ry cause that ever I fought I fought it full without regret or shame But the dark does die As the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes Must meet the dawn And if I see the day I'd only have to stay So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone Oh, ev'ry thought that's strung a knot in my mind I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung But it's not to stand naked under unknowin' eyes It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung But the time ain't tall Yet on time you depend and no word is possessed By no special friend And though the line is cut It ain't quite the end I'll just bid farewell till we meet again Oh, a false clock tries to tick out my time To disgrace, distract, and bother me And the dirt of gossip blows into my face And the dust of rumors covers me But if the arrow is straight And the point is slick It can pierce through dust no matter how thick So I'll make my stand And remain as I am And bid farewell and not give a damn

Thanks for this song, Swinging. Especially as I do not remember it, so it's almost like a new one to me.

Dear Pig, I have loved and enjoyed your fine work and your channel for quit awhile. Your uploading and sharing with many this incredible and rarely seen performance is a welcome and needed blessing. It is a gift to have the ability to watch, hear and reflect on a lifetime of Dylans work. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this. The ashes are still cooling and there is more to endure on the horizon. The preciousness and the purity of this music is fitting and you have no way of knowing this. Thank you for following your heart. Eyes to see and ears to hear. Keep watch. Guard your heart. Aloha

This one KICKS the album version's BUTT. I just had my first in-person rehearsal in over a year with my little theater ensemble, which was good and also exhausting and this is so so soothing. Thank you.
