I wish Bob still wrote and performed music like this. All of the CTI records still hold up in 2022. I miss this type of music. Soothing, powerful and romantic. No studio gimmicks just professional musicianship.

Got to see the Bob James Quartet play this live a few weeks ago. No lie when he started playing I got real spooked, it was legit majestic. As a musician it was an incredibly transformative experience. Wish I could've met the man himself to thank him.

This was the song that got me into Jazz. 1974. Heard this song played on KOCM "K Orange County Music" with studios in Newport Beach. Think it was on 103.1 FM and radiated at 3,000 watts. They played mostly Ferrante and Teicher and Mantovani. No on-air DJs, but whomever spun the albums was "subversive." Heard Bob James, Pieces of a Dream, Cal Tjader, etc. A year or so later I came across KBCA 105.1 with Jim Goza and Chuck Niles, who introduced me to Michael Franks and Chuck Mangione, as well as Dizzy, Monk, Coltrane, Bird, etc. I was hooked. Have been ever since.

In France in 1975 this music was not availableo' the market..but living in Senegal at 15 years old a Libanon importer handed me this vinyl record ...I am 60 now and stil listen to it every month. Bob is a master when comes the time to choose spaces and notes at the fender !

I saw a clip of Common on MTV in the mid-noughties and remembered the sample. I listened to Bob James and couldn't remember where I heard it. I remembered for a long time, started listening to Common, found the song in the end.

Reminds me of stumbling down the esplanade one stupid night with Fran and Jock. God what a bunch of splendid kids we were. This album was never far away from my turntable in those years. That was before everything went a bit .. well.. dark, I guess. For me and Jock at least....

I liked this since I was a teenager - I had an older taste in music. In 2016 I binge watched Breaking Bad and couldn't believe it when I saw Hank naked in the supermarket and this was playing! The most beautiful rendition ❤
