I own Ham's Barbershop in Turkey, Texas - where Bob Wills was a barber. The barbershop is currently being restored back to it's glory in 1925.

That's really something to be proud of. I'm planning to drive out from SC for the Bob Wills festival next year in one of my classic daily drivers. I'll definitely have to check the shop out, maybe even get a trim while I'm there.

Surprised the great Glen did this song, but not because he did it, but because he was so young. LIttle did anyone realize what an off the charts amazing guitar player he was.

My experience of Glen is one of the highlights of my radio career. He was on a tour with Red Foley and Lynn Anderson in 11/67. I was with Glen and his group until 5:30 in the AM at an all night coffee shop listening to stories and jokes after the tour had played Salt Lake City. Great guy and one of the most gifted of guitar players.

What a tremendously talented musician and singer Glenn Campbell was! I'm happy to have found this clip. He had a beautiful tenor voice, and he was one of the world's best guitarists. He also celebrated, and moved easily across, several musical genres, country, western swing, rock n roll, and country-pop. His versatility led some country "purists" to conclude that he had "sold out" to commercialism, as if there was something inexcusable about pursuing a musician's right to make money by entertaining a variety of audiences! When he met Jimmy Webb and became his songs' interpreter and projector, Glenn Campbell married his amazing artistry with commercial success. He did it as well as any of the relatively few Hall of Famers who have been able to accomplish that rare feat. As a big fan, I miss him.

My dad (WWII VET) knew Bob I guess. He had so many photos of him and autographs. My mom and him went to all his dances they could in Texas in the 50's and early 60's. I remember as a child listening to Bob's music LOUD till the wee hours of the morning trying to sleep. And now of course I know why. Show me a human who can't tap their feet to his music.

There is Bob Wills all over RU-vid. I have dozens of videos right here. South of the Border was a hit for Gene Autry. Bob did record it for Kapp Records in the early 70s, but it was mostly studio musicians and not the Texas Playboys that you hear here.

I wonder who was playing the steel guitar in this group. On top of that, I was always a massive Glen Campbell fan. Buying my first album by him in 1964. Recently, on my way back to Vermont from Texas. I took aside trip to Billstown, Arkansas to visit Glen's grave and I'm so glad that did. I had the pleasure of meeting Glen's nephew Steve Campbell and had a very nice 20 minute conversation with him. He was impressed as to how much I knew about the family history. Wish I could post the pictures on here.

@UOENG270 I think you misunderstood me. I was referring to a different tv show, called Cal's Corral. Regarding this performance with Bob Wills on Star Route, Glen has more than once described it as a dream come true, performing with one of his childhood heroes. Glen has never made a secret of his love for Bob Wills, performing his songs live regularly, especially when he shares the stage with his older brothers. Glen also contributed to the 2005 Bob Wills tribute album with I Want to Be Wanted.

I've read that Glen also played and/or toured with 'The Champs' of instrumental fame...Tequila ! Glen is one of those individuals that succeeded both as an instrumentalist & singer because he had talent in both areas. Looking at this video he looks like a young Clint Eastwood....so I guess he got another break, too. Kristofferson was also multi-talented but rode into Hollywood on his looks. How many singlely talented people have to take backstage because of double dipping?

Star Route With Rod Cameran. I think Glen Campbell was staff musician on the Jimmy Dean Show and some of the rock n roll shows of the early 60's as well as Star Route. If the TV Show was filmed in Los Angeles Glen Campbell was probably playing guitar.

Some 'Glenn' facts: 1: A young Glenn Campbell walked into the Fender factory and asked Forrest White if Fender would sponsor him with a guitar and amp. Don Randall (Sales Director) was consulted and he decided not to sponsor an unknown. 2: Glenn was a one time member of the Beach Boys and played lead guitar on Good Vibrations. 3: Glenn is a hot guitar player and in demand for many studio sessions.

@kingbee1500
@kingbee1500 9 лет назад
I think there were a couple of C&W versions out with Johnnie Lee Wills' version, but his was by far the bigger because of its R&B crossover sales due to the great instrumental breaks and syncopated rhythm. Then, along comes the pop covers...bland and flat but saleable in 1949-50. Shaggy hair...:) Will check on any more Wills siblings in music.

Since childhood I have REALLY disliked country music. My parents loved it and I ended up having to listen to it all the time. I've always joked that it was a form of child abuse.😆That said, I absolutely love San Antonio Rose. I have no knowledge of music theory so I can't analyse the song except to say that the melody is unique and upbeat, I think it's unusually complex for a pop song, and the lyric is kind of a sweet, straightforward, positive love song. All together the effect is sort of light and joyful. Anyway, this hater of country music loves San Antonio Rose. ❤️😆 edit: Having spent my early childhood in north Texas... this song is so very , very Texas.❤
